Sifu IGN review. This game looks hard as **** with some good kung-fu and interesting aging concepts.

Digital only at the moment (with a respectable $39.99 price) but there is some problems with early access right now.

Anyone looking at this game? Official game release date is Tuesday the 8th.

Forbidden West getting great reviews. Metacritic has it at an 89 with 96/100 reviews being 80+

most say it’s everything they first one did only far bigger and better. World is massive. There is a ton more stuff to do. More skills and moves to learn. Better resource management. Huge, fun, and intense battles and set pieces. A long and gripping story. Biggest complaint I’m seeing is that it doesn’t have the same mystery and intrigue as the first one since the secret of the world is revealed in Zero Dawn and that it doesn’t do anything revolutionary or new, just what it does it does really well.

Can’t wait

I spent the weekend with Forbidden West and I am in love. If you’re a fan of HZD, this is just that game cranked up to the max. Looking at the index there are about 2-3x more machines than in HZD with many have 2-3 or even 8+ variants, More weapons, more weapon variety and weapon types to figure out how you want to play. Bigger skills trees, tons more side quests and quest variety. Side missions are fun and meaningful, often compared to Witcher 3 in reviews. (Didn’t like TW3 so can’t confirm personally)

Easily the best looking console game I’ve seen.

Even the random NPC or side quest characters look amazing. The conversations are so fluid and real. Smallest uncanny valley I’ve seen. Any one of the NPCs looks like someone you’d see in the break room on lunch. Just a real ****ing person. look at this dude.

I’ve gone through several conversations multiple times just to watch them again because their eyes are blinking and moving or they’re raising their eyebrows, turning their heads, and talking with their hands etc. It’s so expressive, it’s really a sight to behold. Even their teeth and skin, pores etc all are unique for each person.

the gameplay is just porn. combat is more intense than ever. Heart pumping epic battles. Even small skirmishes with a couple low level scroungers or scrappers can turn into trouble quickly if you aren’t careful. The machines are ****ing brutal. I love so many of the new ones I’ve encountered so far. A massive cobra, a hippo, even a kangaroo lol. There are so many quality of life improvements from the first game, one is that you don’t have to scan the various parts of the machine to find out what it is. You scan the machine once and can easily cycle through the various weakness and strengths and resources etc. the combat is so satisfying, even after playing HZD 3-4 times, it’s still just *chef’s kiss* to me. I haven’t quite mastered the melee combat for human fights, it looks improved but not as deep or as expanded upon as I was hoping. Looking through the skill trees (warrior, Hunter, infiltration, machinist, gardener- not all the names are right but you get the idea), I think most abilities expand upon your existing skill sets or the new weapons with occasional new overall skills learned. Haven’t really figured out the new valor attacks/abilities yet. But the only one I’ve unlocked is the one that temporarily somewhat cloaks you which helps in getting out of a jam or crossing a large gap to get from cover to cover. The shield glider is awesome and makes traversal even easier as you don’t have to climb down mountains or rappel down them you can just float across chasms or over to new areas. Very similar to how BOtW did this. One thing I love that they added is you can flip through weapons now without having to pull up the weapon wheel which is really useful switching back and forth between a couple weapons like a sling or the different bows in the middle of combat.

The world is massive and gorgeous. I spent 13 hours before I even got to the Forbidden West. Movement through the world felt a little clunky at first but I changed settings to favor performance like 30 minutes in (during tutorial area) so it’s locked at 60fps and after tweaking the sensitivity on my controller settings it felt exactly like a smoother HZD. All the screens I’ve taken were at the performance level not the graphical optimization setting too. Other quality of life features are if you have an upgrade for your weapon or outfit or pouch but don’t have the required material, you can make a job of it which basically makes getting that material a side quest so you can track the machine to find what you need or keep up with the things you want make sure to grab before you head back in town to make upgrades etc. it’s a really cool feature and very helpful. The towns are a lot more full and bustling with life from little kids running around to full taverns with chattering drunks slamming their glasses down etc. it really adds to the lived-in feel of the world and the uniqueness of the various areas and tribes, which was a weakness of HZD.

As always I go with limited hud. Basically just the compass is all I have on screen and I use it just to find the general direction of things. But I’m just out exploring. Some of the locations or vistas or cinematography are just jaw dropping.

the story is great so far. it picks up shortly after HZD ends and immediately continues where it left off. It all fits with the world too it’s not like a ham fisted story just to justify a sequel. The events of the first game and what you learn in the first game lead here perfectly. Gameplay wise, Aloy can do pretty much anything she could at the end of HZD. She doesn’t get nerfed and have to reacquire all of her skills. There are some machines you could override in HZD (if you did all the cauldrons) but start out this game unable to which is fine. There are still several you can override off the bat. That’s about the only difference and for story elements she’s lost a lot of her gear so you’ll need to buy the new weapons. That’s a bummer but happens in pretty much every sequel so wasn’t a huge deal. I also love that Aloy is now a hero in the world. She’s famous from the events of the first game instead of being an outcast. The story takes time to show how she’s handling this change in her life, and how she shuts people out, and is reacting to the world around her etc while she’s juggling the 3-4 different threats from main plot.

the only real issue I’ve seen is clipping when climbing. Typically it only happens when Aloy jumps to something long like a ladder and her body swings and will sometimes swing thru part of the ladder. A couple of dead enemies started spazzing out after a machine was killed on top of them too. Nothing major or really even that distracting tho. Ghost of Tsushima’s clipping every time you wore a caped outfit was a lot more distracting and frustrating to me since it was on screen the entire time staring you in the face.

will post more thoughts as I get further through the story. Honestly a little overwhelmed by how much there is to do and it’s hard to even prioritize it because all of it awesome and doesn’t feel like a chore largely because the characters and world are so engaging and the combat is so much fun. Nothing feels like work.

Highly recommend

Jeez, that is a strong review. The original failed to grip my attention. May need to give it another go.

Same.  I tried to play it like 3 separate times and just couldn't get into it.  I was thinking about getting the new one just because graphics looked incredible but with Elden Ring in 4 days I decided not to.

Good to hear about the voice acting because it was terrible in the first one.

EDIT:

I also heard there are some graphical issues with the new Horizon with certain resolutions/displays and stuff where there is a really bad shimmering effect.  And according to one of the Digital Foundry guys, it is not easily fixable in a patch.

I wondered if anyone was waiting on Elden Ring. Never played a Souls game before. So this should be fun

I've only ever played Demon's Souls at PS5 launch and loved it.

I will most likely get it on PS5 unless I hear XSX just has better performance or something.

I know everyone is going ape over the new Horizon game, never played it, but I don't get the hype. It looks like the typical open world, "climb tower, reveal map, go to icon". I'm assuming I'm wrong in thinking that its an Assassin's Creed/Shadow of Mordor/Mad Max kind of game?

You just described exactly the type of game to get over-hyped every year for the past several years.  Shouldn't be too surprising when another one comes along and generates hype.

I've got it pre-ordered on XSX. Already have it downloaded. I'll be going to New Zealand on the 24th 🙃 Gotta love Xbox
