Larry
Re: Barr's latest example of abusing the DOJ for political purposes. (But just wait a few minutes.) I dunno. I could actually see the argument that police protection is a civil right, and that choosing to withdraw that protection is a violation of the rights of the people who live/work/own property/travel through/or otherwise use said area. At least, if Barr was even pretending to be honest, I could see that argument. Edited September 17, 2020 by Larry

Is the right response to a riot simply stepping back and letting them burn and loot? Anything more than that includes violence, as there is no such thing as stopping a mob from doing anything that will be entirely peaceful. We’re seeing democratic mayors struggle with this. If they do nothing their community hates them. if they do something the protestors (not just rioters) hate them. It’s an election year, this is going to keep coming up. Cant really control riots, if the anger is enough, any one riot thats put down will lead to an angrier riot the next. Lets not go down the Syria path. We have to prevent them from happening in the first place. Thats whole point of a riot. Its to give powers-that-be, a warning that they are not really as in-control as they think they are. When enough portions of the citizenry would rather just burn the mother****er down then continue with the status quo, the powers-that-be are supposed to get the signal that "they arent asking for change anymore", or as Chapelle quoted, better listen to these streets, cause after that, "aint nothing but rat-a-tat-tat."

Exactly. We had peaceful protests to start, and they were met with police brutality. What do we expect to happen after months of that?

I agree it’s ideal to prevent them, but when they do happen justifiably (or not) there has to be a plan. Just as there has to be an understanding between community and police about what justifiable force looks like. A civil society isn’t just agreement on the positive things, it’s the ugly stuff too. Without this, you just have emotional arguments. Someone fights a cop and gets hurt -> riot. Rioters get shot by store owners because the law says they can and cops fail to show up -> more rioting. It’s not enough to say what should have happened or try to prevent them. The way to avoid becoming the next Syria is through a democratic government that listens to its people. Even with that, the rule of law must be applied to avoid the balance tilting the other direction and seeing a surge in crime due to a absent government that isn’t strong enough on enforcement. That leads to more vigilantism like the infamous “roof top Koreans” in LA. I think we need more real discussions between the people and their government, and less empty platitudes or splashy news coverage. Talk to the people like adults and change the discussion to what the future might look like. 1

PokerPacker
I've never been a fan of Joe Rogan. He is so prone to falling for charlatans and idiotic conspiracy theories. I'm sure he can have interesting conversations with people because he has that curiosity, but he doesn't seem to have the capacity to decipher fact from bat-**** insane fiction.

China
On 9/16/2020 at 1:42 PM, China said: Protesters held on $1 million bail after demonstration over Pennsylvania police shooting At least seven protesters who were arrested during demonstrations over a fatal police shooting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, were held on $1 million bail Tuesday. Lancaster police arrested 12 adults and a juvenile overnight Sunday when a crowd of more than 100 people gathered outside the police station to protest the shooting that day of Ricardo Munoz, who prosecutors say had run at an officer with a knife. Police used pepper spray and chemical agents against demonstrators that night. "Suspects piled street signs, trash cans, a metal dumpster, a metal bike rack, pieces of plywood and a wooden pallet at the intersection of N. Prince St. and W. Chestnut St," police said in a statement. "The suspects filled the dumpster with additional trash bags, as well as the wood, and set the contents on fire." The adults face numerous charges, including conspiracy to commit arson, riot, failure to disperse, institutional vandalism and disorderly conduct. Court records were not immediately available for the adults Tuesday. Seven of the adults were held on $1 million bond set by Magisterial District Judge Bruce Roth, and four others were still awaiting their arraignments. One of the adults was on probation at the time of his arrest. The men and women appeared Thursday morning on a TV monitor before a Lancaster County judge and a magisterial district judge. Several defendants petitioned the court to lower their bail. Others had their bail reviewed by the judge who set the initial bail conditions. “It now is obvious to everybody that the $1 million bail that was set was not to serve justice but was set to punish,” said Eliza Booth, of Lancaster Stands Up. “The existing system of cash bail is discrimination against poor people,” Lancaster City Council President Ismail Smith Wade-El said. Lancaster Stands Up said the original high bail amounts were politically motivated attacks on the movement for police reform and accountability.
