When Are (Real) Sports Coming Back?

Nothing against Korean baseball and the UFC doing Enter the Dragon on a private island, but I think we should discuss and keep one another updated on when sports are coming back.

Today, the Dolphins released a plan to have an NFL season because all good ideas come from Florida.

The Miami Dolphins have come up with a plan to put fans in the stands this upcoming season.

Dolphins CEO and president Tom Garfinkel told “Good Morning America” on Monday that the team is working on plan that would see 16,000 fans at Hard Rock Stadium. The venue is home to 65,000 seats.

"We would have times to come in for security at different gates so people would be separated out, in terms of when they enter the stadium," said Garfinkel. "We would exit the stadium much like a church environment, where each row exits so people aren't filing out all at the same time in a herd."

Fans would also need to follow social distancing guidelines. The team would put colored spots on the ground, marking where people would need to stand before entering the stadium.

Interesting tidbit from that article is that Hard Rock Stadium became the first public facility to earn the Global Biorisk Advisory Council's STAR accreditation, which is the standard used for facilities to implement cleaning, disinfecting and infectious disease prevention work practices to control coronavirus risks.  I guess some people read Rainbow 6 and decided a plan was needed.

Also, Kansas State's AD blabbed about the 7 plans being discussed for getting college football back, which is vital for college sports to exist at all since football funds all of the other sports except men's bball.

But there are several possibilities. Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor says the Big 12 is currently discussing seven primary options for the upcoming football season, and he outlined them during a conversation on Friday.

  • Starting the season as scheduled in early September
  • Starting the season in late September and ending games in December
  • Starting the season in October and playing a conference-only schedule
  • Starting the season in September and playing a conference-only schedule
  • Waiting until 2021 and starting the season in January
  • Waiting until 2021 and starting the season in March
  • Splitting up the season with six games in the fall and six games in the spring

Taylor thinks all seven options are on the table right now, but he is more optimistic about certain plans than others. He said starting the season on time “is going to be a long shot.” He isn’t sure why teams would start the season in September and scrub all non-nonconference games. There would be many moving parts involved with a split season. And he thinks the idea of beginning the season in January is particularly far-fetched.

Finally, here is a story on the NBA's thinking, which I include because, although I am not an NBA fan, I concede that it is the best-run league and usually leads the way for American sports.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29119309/inside-nba-urgent-decisions-tries-finish-season

NHL is hell-bent on doing something this summer.  If one of the star players were to test positive and not show symptoms you would never know and they would keep playing.

I do not think it is going to end well.

I don’t think you are supposed to use that term anymore.  And where would all the other people stand?

2021. I just don’t see how you do it. What happens when a player tests positive? You quarantine the team and then cancel their games for two weeks?

All feels like wishful thinking to me and quarantine fatigue.

I hope they figure it out. My two hobbies are sports and porn. I made it to page ten on redtube today. I am a disgusting person.

Hope I'm wrong, but I think the NHL and NBA are going to start things up too soon. We all know the NFL does whatever they want, so they will stuff fans in stadiums this fall.

I don't see college sports starting anytime soon though.

Today there will be a decision made whether the German Bundesliga can start playing games on the 16th of May. Early reports indicate that the government will accept the concept (no fans in the stadium, constant testing of players, etc.) of the league and permit the start.

There is a huge ethical debate going on in Germany about whether this is okay or not. Germany managed the crisis rather well with "only" 6.5k deaths so far even though we are the biggest country in Europe in terms of population. All relevant numbers have constantly declined over the last couple of days/weeks and the social life is slowly returning with shops and restaurants opening up, etc. However, many people argue that it is a bad sign since you are still supposed to social distance and players on the field obviously can't do this. Also all the players need to be tested constantly which takes away testing capacities for other people who might be in a more dire need to get tested, etc. So it will be interesting how that thing unfolds. The main issue for the clubs is, that if they do not start playing again many clubs will go bankrupt as there won't be any TV money paid as long as there are no games.

Fun fact: Some clubs asked their fans to not claim refunds for the already paid tickets for the upcoming games (that either get canceled or are played without fans) because they need the revenues. At the same time the clubs' players took an 11% pay cut on average. Image asking your fans, of whom a lot have lost their jobs and are struggeling to pay for their minimum requirements etc. to finance your business while you still pay millions to millionaires...sports is just out of touch...

However, to get back the topic. German professional football is almost certain to be played again starting on the 16th of May. And I guess this will have a huge impact on how other countries advance in that regard. It's basically the field experiement for countries that have been hit by Corona.

I mean what's the worst that could happen. If a few boomers and older need to die so we can have live sports than so be it. Amirite?

But seriously, after playing mens league hockey for about 10 years straight, maybe 2-3 times per week. I'm really ****ing depressed that I haven't been able to play hockey in the last 2 months.

I feel that pain. I have been playing football (soccer) my entire life. Additionally, I played tennis, hockey and golf competitively in teams - so playing team sports has been enormously important during my life. Because of work and stuff I was only playing football and occasionally tennis and golf lately but it still sucks when all of a sudden all of that was not possible anymore.

I also got a bit depressed and I was hanging around at home way too much which is why I bought a road bike. I really enjoyed that the last couple of weeks, and it's something I can do with my girlfriend and don't need my boys (for now). It's a great way to exercise and I can also do it alone after work which is nice for a quick workout.

But I am so looking forward to playing tennis with a buddy tomorrow. It's the first time in months that I'll see one of my friends in person and I am also pumped to play tennis again. So I absolutely feel you. Hope you guys can start doing sports again soon as well.

Bold predictions:

The NBA will start the playoffs on July 1 in Vegas.

Beard and Russ with fresh legs is gonna run the table.

There should be a huge asterisk next to the "champions" name in the record book. These teams would've had almost an entire off-season before resuming the season. No fault of their own, but still.

At least every team will be in the same circumstance. Sure, some teams benefit more than others, but thems the breaks. The NFL had a 9 game regular season in 82 but our Redskins sure as hell count that trophy! ;)

Are they really going to try to keep people 6 feet apart when entering the stadium ?

What's the point of that, when as soon as they get in the stadium, they'll be hobnobbing for 4 hours, whether it's in their seats, or getting to their seats, or pissing in the urinals, which sounds real safe by the way, having someone's body fluids splashing on you

That would be a good thing for older more veteran teams, like the Nats and Caps.

I've never been more bored in my life.  I literally sit on the couch and stare at the wall.  There is nothing on TV I like watching other than sports.  I surf the internet all day, the same 5 webpages over and over.  I watch my measly stocks on Etrade fluctuate until 1 pm.  It is getting bad.  The highlight of my day was walking my dog to the donut store to buy lottery tickets.  Yahoo.

Bring sports back for the love of holy christ before I jump off a cliff into the Pacific ocean and hope to get devoured by a Great White shark.
