I just saw something like 75 NFL players tested positive in the last two days.

I posted in the School thread that they shut down Cornell University because they had over 900 cases in a week, most of them omicron, and many of them in people who've been vaccinated.

At some point (once vaccine is available for every age group), do we need to transition to vaccine/mask and then focusing on hospitalized or seriously ill patient numbers?  Seems like keeping up with the variants to stop the spread may be a tough hill to climb long term, whereas keeping down the number of seriously ill patients may be much more obtainable with widespread vaccination.

The symptom that tells you you've caught omicron

As preliminary data begins to roll in surrounding the omicron variant, one symptom is beginning to stand out among the others: Many of those infected have reported having a scratchy throat as opposed to a sore throat.

A number of U.K. media outlets have reported on this symptom, which originally gained traction when the initial cases of the omicron variant were reported.

The South African doctor who was the first to detect the COVID-19 omicron variant, Angelique Coetzee, described most of the symptoms as “extremely mild” when alerting people what to look out for.

Unlike traditional coronavirus patients and those with the delta variant, the patient didn’t report a sore throat, but rather a scratchy throat. He also didn’t develop a cough or loss of taste or smell.

Local health departments in Missouri halt 'all COVID-19 work' after court ruling, AG letter

Multiple local health departments in rural Missouri have halted most or all of their COVID-19 tracking and prevention work after Attorney General Eric Schmitt ordered agencies to comply with a recent court ruling this week.

Those departments' decisions follow the lead of Laclede County, whose health authorities said Thursday it would discontinue contact tracing, case investigations and its quarantine policy. Schmitt sent letters to local health agencies this week ordering that they repeal mask mandates, isolation and quarantine require"and other public health orders."

McDonald County, in the far corner of southwest Missouri, said Thursday it had "ceased all COVID-19 orders," including isolation and quarantine policies.

"While this is a huge concern for our agency, we have no other option but to follow the orders of the Missouri Attorney General at this time," the department wrote. "We are awaiting additional direction from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, but have no timeline or expectations that this ruling will be changed.

"While our agency remains determined to protect the health of our county residents, it should be understood that this ruling greatly affects how we will be able to proceed and stop the spread of COVID."

The Show-Me State Decides to Hide COVID Numbers

In its flag, Missouri quotes Voltaire: Salus populi suprema lex esto, which, roughly translated, means let the welfare of the people be the highest law.

Those two tenets of what it means to be a Missourian are sort of in conflict these days, as the state competes with other red states to demonstrate how conservative they are, even if it kills people.

Incumbent Attorney General Eric Schmitt, a U.S. Senate hopeful, is using his office (as Josh Hawley did before him) to climb up the political ladder. But what Schmitt is doing will almost certainly result in people dying:

Following a ruling by a Cole County Circuit Court last week, Schmitt, a Republican running for U.S. Senate in Missouri, said the ruling determined mask mandates, quarantines and other public health orders are illegal.

He then sent letters to dozens of county health departments and school districts. The letters demanded that districts drop any mask mandates and other COVID-19 related protocols. Schmitt also warned of legal action if they ignored his requests.

That’s right: The state AG is sending cease and desist letters to local school boards and health departments, threatening them if they do not comply with his wishes.

There are three problems with this. The first is medical, because things are not great in Missouri right now:

Screen-Shot-2021-12-14-at-3.31.30-PM-102

Which brings us to the third—and much more significant problem. As part of compliance with Schmitt’s letter, the local public health agencies in the above counties will stop “case investigation, contact tracing, quarantine orders, and public announcements of current cases/deaths, etc.”

Which brings us to the third—and much more significant problem. As part of compliance with Schmitt’s letter, the local public health agencies in the above counties will stop “case investigation, contact tracing, quarantine orders, and public announcements of current cases/deaths, etc.”

Which means that we may well see case numbers in Missouri dropping—not because fewer people are infected with COVID, but because Eric Schmitt’s political ambitions are causing local governments to stop counting COVID infections as a way of bowing to his MAGA bona fides.

This abject refusal to acknowledge reality would be pathetic, if it weren’t so dangerous.

Crazy Right-wing Pastor: Masks Are A Tool Of Satan

Is it any wonder that people are still dying and getting infected from Covid with lunatics like this?

Right-wing pastors who are anti-vax are dropping like flies after getting infected themselves, but that has no bearing on Shane Vaughn's need to lie.

Vaughn screamed to his flock that if his church yells "enough is enough," COVID will disappear, or something.

"Do you know why Satan hates when you won’t put a mask on your face? Because you’re screaming loud, ‘I HAVE NO FEAR!,'” Vaughn yelled at the top of his lungs.

When did wearing a mask make you a servant of Lucifer?

“When you’ve got a masked-up church trying to lay hands on somebody for healing, you’ve walked into the biggest lie you’ve ever seen,” Vaughn proclaimed. “Don’t you ever wear one in this building. Don’t you ever come here and bring your fear in the midst of our faith. We are a victorious church. We are healed church. We walk in healing no matter what.”

It's very difficult for normal people trying to understand a-holes like Shane Vaughn, who claim a religious moral high ground, and then say they speak to God, and God is telling people not to wear a mask because you have no fear.

I know he must be getting paid for his efforts, but actively trying to infect a congregation is more than sick.

It looks like Satan is working through Vaughn.

‘We've Never Seen This Before in NYC': COVID Positivity Rate Doubles in 3 Days on Omicron Spread

The percentage of people in New York City testing positive for COVID-19 doubled in three days this week, and a top advisor to Mayor Bill de Blasio said it was an indication of the omicron variant evading immunity in a way the virus never had before.

Meanwhile, the state of New York reported a massive surge in new positive tests -- 18,276 in one day, up more than 40% in one day and the highest single-day total since January 14.

Democrats are probably younger too, just saying…

The difference in age isn't remotely close to the difference in COVID death rates between Democrats and Republicans:

The U.S. electorate is aging: 52% of registered voters are ages 50 and older, up from 41% in 1996. This shift has occurred in both partisan coalitions. More than half of Republican and GOP-leaning voters (56%) are ages 50 and older, up from 39% in 1996. And among Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters, half are 50 and older, up from 41% in 1996.

Report Details Scores Of Trump-Era Problems With Pandemic Response

A year-end House subcommittee report released Friday detailed scores of ways in which President Donald Trump’s administration impeded the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 crisis, risked millions of lives and wasted taxpayer money.

The 46-page document contains some information that had already been released, as well as new revelations. Taken as a whole, it makes abundantly clear how the Trump administration failed to move fast enough to combat the virus, sometimes in order to avoid “angering” the president, as hundreds of thousands of Americans became sick and died.

According to the report, documents show that “Trump Administration officials allowed the pandemic response to take a ‘back-seat’ in the fall of 2020” as the nation was gearing up for the 2020 election.

The Trump White House “purposefully weakened the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) testing guidance to reduce the amount of testing being conducted and obscure how rapidly the virus was spreading across the country,” the report said.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the former White House coronavirus response coordinator, told the committee that in August 2020, administration officials changed guidance to say asymptomatic people did not need to be tested for COVID-19 ― contrary to the science. The CDC eventually restored the guidance the following month “over the objections of senior White House officials,” Birx said, according to the report.

Trump did not like the public briefing given by the CDC in February 2020, so the White House blocked the agency from giving others for three months.

Dr. Nancy Messonnier, a former respiratory diseases official for the CDC, “accurately warned the public about the risks posed by the coronavirus” in a Feb. 25, 2020 briefing. Messonnier told the committee, however, that the briefing “angered” Trump, and said she received “upsetting” calls from former CDC Director Robert Redfield and former Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar about it.

Another official told the committee that the CDC wanted to hold a briefing in April 2020 “that would have provided information on the state of the pandemic, a new CDC recommendation to wear cloth face coverings, and new evidence of pediatric cases and deaths from the coronavirus,” but the White House blocked their request.

One CDC official said he was “haunted” by how the Trump administration altered health guidance for religious services.

The Trump White House wanted to give faith communities guidance that would still let congregations meet in person with minimal disruptions, the report said.

Senior CDC official Dr. Jay Butler told the committee that the published version of the government’s guidance for faith communities in the early months of the pandemic “softened some very important public health recommendations,” including the suggestion to halt choir performances.

At what point do we treat it like a flu? Like honestly. Nothing seems to fully stop the spread and mutations so does life seem like we have to wear masks forever? Sure seems to be that way.  I'm fully vaccinated plus wear masks and ultimately it doesn't matter. People are getting it like wildfire. Every variation spread like wildfire. It'd probably gonna be in every day life.

When the mortality rate is the same as the flu?  Right now they're not even close.

Unvaccinated should expect winter of 'illness and death' ahead of projected COVID surge: White House

The White House's chief coordinator for the U.S. coronavirus response has a strong warning for unvaccinated Americans ahead of a projected surge in cases over the next few weeks.

If you're vaccinated, "we've done the right thing, and we will get through this," White House COVID coordinator Jeff Zients said.

"For the unvaccinated, you're looking at a winter of severe illness and death for yourselves, your families and the hospitals you may soon overwhelm."

@TryTheBeal!

Great but long Twitter post.  People don't do websites anymore, so the character limit is annoying.

My family has a European cruise scheduled this summer (we delayed last year).   We had been talking about visiting multiple countries, but now I am stressed just thinking about having to deal with quarantining abroad if one of our family members caught COVID; hadn't even thought of logistics of getting tested prior to returning.   Who knows what the situation will he like, but certainly I am going to have to limit our plans, travel and exposure now... and keep eyes and ears to the ground.
