Texas doctor's privileges suspended for 'spreading dangerous misinformation' about COVID-19

A Houston-based doctor has had her privileges suspended from her job for “spreading dangerous misinformation” about COVID-19.

Houston Methodist Hospital spokesperson Patti Muck confirmed to The Washington Post on Monday that Mary Bowden's privileges were suspended.

Bowden, an ear and throat doctor at the hospital, has tweeted multiple times on her personal account that “vaccine mandates are wrong.”

“The physician’s privileges at Houston Methodist have been suspended,” Muck said in an email to the Post.

Bowden also used her account to promote the anti-parasitic drug ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment.

“Ivermectin might not be as deadly as everyone said it was," Bowden wrote in a tweet on Nov. 10. “Speak up!”

Neither the Food and Drug Administration nor the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended ivermectin, a drug used to kill parasites in animals and humans, as an actual COVID-19 treatment.

Florida Woman Who Sued for Ivermectin Dies From COVID

A Florida teacher hospitalized with COVID-19 has died after her husband unsuccessfully sued to force doctors to treat her with ivermectin, a drug popular among some skeptics of accepted coronavirus treatments despite a lack of studies proving its effectiveness.

Tamara Drock died Friday, 12 weeks after being admitted to Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, Ryan Drock told the Palm Beach Post.

He sued the hospital last month in an attempt to require doctors to administer ivermectin, a drug used to treat conditions caused by parasitic worms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug to treat COVID-19, saying it hasn’t proved effective in pre-clinical trials.

Palm Beach County Circuit Judge James Nutt rejected Drock's lawsuit last month, saying allowing judges to countermand doctor's decisions could set a dangerous precedent.

Deadly COVID-19 spike after church event is 'unfortunate' but part of God's plan, says pastor

The pastor of a Nova Scotia church that hosted an event linked to a COVID-19 spike and three deaths told his parishioners this week that what happened is "unfortunate," but it is all part of God's plan.

Robert Smith, the pastor of Gospel Light Baptist Church in Amherst, N.S., held his first in-person service in three weeks on Sunday and livestreamed video of his sermon on Facebook. The video was later taken down.

At the end of October, Smith's church hosted a multi-day gathering of faith groups from across the province. Public health officials have said more than 100 people attended and were not asked to show proof of vaccination — a violation of public health orders.

"I followed what God wanted us to do," Smith said from the pulpit. "We had a great week of meetings … a young lady got saved."

Three people have died in the past week of COVID-19 — one at a group home in Amherst and two at a long-term care home in Pugwash, N.S. — and the province has said those cases trace back to the Gospel Light event.

Community spread in Nova Scotia's northern and western health zones is "primarily associated" with that event, according to the province.

Well wife’s 91YO grandma survived! She got released but she’s getting home care for 7 weeks before she can go back to her nursing home. She’s still too weak to do things like she used to. So “survived”.

My nephew’s school is now shut down until after Thanksgiving. 20% of students have Covid or are quarantining.

New Revelations Emerge on How Donald Trump Killed 400,000 (or More) Americans

We keep learning more about Trump’s deadly mishandling of the pandemic.

The congressional January 6 investigation has been drawing great attention lately, particularly as it has triggered the federal indictment of Steve Bannon for defying its subpoena, fired off other subpoenas at Mark Meadows and assorted Trumpers, and sought to obtain Trump White House records related to the insurrectionist attack on the Capitol. At the same time, a different congressional investigation, with much less notice, has been pursuing another profound betrayal committed by Donald Trump and his crew: the lethal mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis. That inquiry broke into the headlines a few days ago with the news of more evidence that the Trump White House impeded the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s efforts to warn Americans about the pandemic.

On Friday, the Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis, which is chaired by Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), released interviews and documents revealing how senior Trump officials tried to block government health officials from informing the public about the seriousness of COVID-19. On February 25, 2020, Nancy Messonnier, a senior CDC health expert, warned in a news briefing that the virus’s spread in the United States was inevitable. That enraged Trump, who was trying to downplay the coronavirus threat. The new material shows that the Trump administration tried to shut her up. And Anne Schuchat, a top CDC official, told the committee that Trump officials scrambled to hold a briefing hours after Messonnier’s warning, though “there was nothing new to report.”

The story gets worse: Between March 9 and May 29 of last year, the CDC held no press briefings. In testimony to the committee, Kate Galatas, a CDC communications official, said the White House repeatedly thwarted the agency’s attempts to schedule such briefings, including one in April that would have emphasized the need to wear masks to contain the virus’s spread.

And worse: Dr. Deborah Birx, who was the White House COVID-19 task force coordinator, told the committee that Dr. Scott Atlas, a radiologist (not an infectious disease specialist) who was advising Trump on COVID, leaned on the CDC to alter its guidelines on testing to recommend that only symptomatic people be tested. (This would have yielded lower numbers of confirmed cases.) Government scientists, worried about asymptomatic people spreading the disease, thought it was important for symptomatic and asymptomatic people to get tested. Atlas’ pressure, though, led to CDC guidance in August 2020 on testing that was less vigorous. This revised recommendation, Birx told the committee, “resulted in less testing and…less aggressive testing of those without symptoms that I believed were the primary reason for the early community spread.” A month later, the CDC reinstituted the more expansive testing directive. It was released over “objections from senior White House personnel,” according to Birx.

Scientists mystified, wary, as Africa avoids COVID disaster

At a busy market in a poor township outside Harare this week, Nyasha Ndou kept his mask in his pocket, as hundreds of other people, mostly unmasked, jostled to buy and sell fruit and vegetables displayed on wooden tables and plastic sheets. As in much of Zimbabwe, here the coronavirus is quickly being relegated to the past, as political rallies, concerts and home gatherings have returned.

“COVID-19 is gone, when did you last hear of anyone who has died of COVID-19?” Ndou said. “The mask is to protect my pocket,” he said. “The police demand bribes so I lose money if I don’t move around with a mask.” Earlier this week, Zimbabwe recorded just 33 new COVID-19 cases and zero deaths, in line with a recent fall in the disease across the continent, where World Health Organization data show that infections have been dropping since July.

When the coronavirus first emerged last year, health officials feared the pandemic would sweep across Africa, killing millions. Although it’s still unclear what COVID-19’s ultimate toll will be, that catastrophic scenario has yet to materialize in Zimbabwe or much of the continent.

Scientists emphasize that obtaining accurate COVID-19 data, particularly in African countries with patchy surveillance, is extremely difficult, and warn that declining coronavirus trends could easily be reversed.

But there is something “mysterious” going on in Africa that is puzzling scientists, said Wafaa El-Sadr, chair of global health at Columbia University. “Africa doesn’t have the vaccines and the resources to fight COVID-19 that they have in Europe and the U.S., but somehow they seem to be doing better,” she said.

Fewer than 6% of people in Africa are vaccinated. For months, the WHO has described Africa as “one of the least affected regions in the world” in its weekly pandemic reports.

These Fools Thought a COVID Party Sounded Fun. Now They Are on Respirators.

A prosecutor in the northern Italian province of Bolzano has opened an investigation after one man died and several others landed in intensive care after they reportedly attended a COVID party to try to get sick.

The trend has taken hold in northern Italy, where people who don’t want to get vaccinated are trying to get COVID to acquire a Green Pass to work, go inside bars and restaurants, and ride public transportation. In Italy, proof of recovery is sufficient to get the coveted pass for six months.

And in Germany:

Covid: Germans will be ‘vaccinated, recovered or dead’ by end of winter, says health minister

The German health minister has issued his most alarming warning yet urging more people to get jabbed as the country tries to avoid another lockdown.

Jens Spahn said the rapid rise in cases means all unvaccinated people in Germany will have caught Covid-19 by the end of the winter and some of those will die.

“By the end of this winter pretty much everyone in Germany... will have been vaccinated, recovered or died,” he said blaming the “highly contagious Delta variant.”

Please, somebody make this a thing in GQP antivax circles:

Don’t Eat Cow Dung To Protect Against Covid-19 Coronavirus Despite These Claims

Talk about being dung wrong. A video of a Dr. Manoj Mittal from Haryana, India, has been making the social media rounds. This video showed him walking among cows and then poop there is. He picked up from the ground what appeared to be a handful cow dung. He then selected a piece, put it into his mouth, and began chewing. Here’s a tweet with the video:

However, in the video, Mittal apparently claimed that eating cow dung will help purify your mind, body, and soul, according to an article in the Times of India.

This isn’t the first time, though, that some have advocated for eating cow dung. Back in May, Sohel Daria and Md. Rabiul Islam from the University of Asia Pacific in Dhaka, Bangladesh, wrote a letter to the editor entitled “The use of cow dung and urine to cure Covid-19 in India: A public health concern,” published in the International Journal of Health Planning and Management.

Here is a video from the South China Morning Post covering this practice of people covering themselves with cow dung:

How did 10% of passengers to Holland from South Africa arrive with Covid when they all had NEGATIVE tests? Alarm as suspected cases of Omicron are reported in Germany, Australia and Czech Republic alongside confirmed UK and Belgium cases

Alarms were today raised after one in ten passengers coming into the Netherlands from South Africa this morning tested positive for Covid and a wave of suspected cases of the new super-mutant variant were spotted in Europe.

Around 600 passengers arrived on two planes in Schipol Airport, near Amsterdam, from Johannesburg — the epicentre for the new strain that experts fear is 40 per cent more vaccine evasive than Delta — hours after travel bans were put in place.

Some 61 of those on the planes tested positive for the virus on PCR tests after they were stopped at the airport, despite having tested negative before boarding the flight.

People returning to the Netherlands from outside the EU are required to take to show either a negative PCR tests taken 48 hours before their arrival or a negative lateral flow swab done 24 hours before coming back.

Yes, because travel bans worked so well at stopping the spread last time we tried. 😒

Didn't WHO recommend against doing this in the future?  If its already in UK, cats already out the bag, gonna ban Europe next in the middle of the holiday season?
