I think it's time for The Left to start a coordinated "It's bad to stick a fork in your eye you probably shouldn't do it" campaign just to see what happens.

My father in law, mother in law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law (pregnant), nephew, and wife’s 91 yr old grandma all tested positive for Covid. All unvaxxed. Not even telling us they tested positive. Grandma hasn’t eaten in 5 days and initially turned away for monoclonal antibody treatment (they didn’t have any). An unvaxxed aunt has been taking care of grandma, so she prob has it and taking it home to her husband who’s on a transplant list for a new liver. Grandma doesn’t want to be admitted, so she’s taking it back to her nursing home.

The Pharmacies Giving Ivermectin To People Bamboozled By Right-Wing Misinformation

When you visit the “COVID-19 Info” page on Austin Compounding Pharmacy’s website, it tells you in no uncertain terms that “taking Ivermectin once a week will decrease your risk of infection and reduce the severity if you do contract COVID-19.” There is no evidence that is true.

The Texas pharmacy also has a special order form that lists 10 COVID-19 medications, none of which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat or prevent the disease. Ivermectin is at the top, followed by hydroxychloroquine (which has been proved to be ineffective against COVID), and a list of non-prescription items to create your own “Corona Six Pack.” The choices include zinc, melatonin and a pulse oximeter because, according to the form, “Oxygen saturation is important.”

Ivermectin as a cure for COVID has proved to be a surprisingly durable myth, with people across the country continuing to jump through hoops to get their hands on it, despite warnings from the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state pharmacy boards that it does not work on the coronavirus. Humans can take the anti-parasitic drug in pill form, and it is available in large, over-the-counter quantities for livestock.

The medicine has been boosted by big names, including controversial podcaster Joe Rogan and Infowars founder Alex Jones. At least two people have died after taking ivermectin instead of being properly treated for COVID, but some brick-and-mortar pharmacies are risking their reputations and patients’ safety by continuing to dispense it, filling prescriptions generated by sometimes-shady practices.

And the right-wing media machine is making sure people are aware that if you want it badly enough, there are absolutely ways to get ivermectin. In September, Fox News host Tucker Carlson asked psychiatrist Mark McDonald to give his audience pointers on how to access human-grade ivermectin. “It depends on where you go,” the anti-vaccine doctor said. “Chain pharmacies: very, very difficult. Small pharmacies, independents, compounding pharmacies have supplies. So you can get it if you look for it. But you often have to make many, many phone calls.”

It actually doesn’t take as many calls as McDonald seems to think. A HuffPost investigation found dozens of independent community pharmacies dispensing ivermectin, and many, as McDonald suggested, are compounding the drug themselves — that is, purchasing ingredients from a wholesale distributor, combining them on their premises and putting the mixture into capsules. Unlike ivermectin straight from the manufacturer, these capsules are not FDA-approved. According to one widely shared list, at least 76 pharmacies in 28 states (including 15 in Florida) and five countries are filling prescriptions.

Patients aren't equipped for cognitive impacts of COVID-19 — neither are their doctors

Forgetfulness, an inability to concentrate, a feeling that something is just “off.” COVID-19 survivors often describe an array of disquieting and disabling neurologic symptoms after their acute illness abates. The term “brain fog” was coined to encompass these neurologic complaints that patients felt were too often dismissed or ignored.

Now, new research confirms what they are telling us: 24 percent of COVID-19 survivors experience significant cognitive impairment that affects memory, executive function and processing speeds.

Of course, patients aren’t looking for affirmation. They need a solution and, until that day arrives, support. Unfortunately, we are even less prepared to meet these needs than we were their acute illness, no matter how sick they were and how stretched our health system has been.

Their recovery will require multisector collaboration between practitioners in health, education and industry. But this does not yet exist at any kind of meaningful scale.

To Long COVID, add the fact that assuming historical data on severe respiratory failure holds, 40 percent of COVID-19’s critically ill patients will be out of work one year following their illness. Not by choice, but by consequence.

It has been almost a quarter century since researchers first published data showing 75 percent of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) suffered from measurable cognitive impairment one year after illness. Follow-up research has shown that psychiatric distress, financial stress, physical deconditioning and isolation are also frighteningly common. Even pre-COVID, we weren’t adequately rehabilitating and supporting the vast majority of these patients, who struggled to return to “normal” both at work and home.

White House press secretary Psaki says she has COVID-19

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Sunday she has contracted COVID-19 and is experiencing mild symptoms.

Psaki, 42, said she was last in contact with President Joe Biden on Tuesday, when she met him in the White House, where they were more than 6 feet apart and wearing masks. Biden, who is tested frequently, last tested negative on Saturday, according to the White House.

Psaki did not accompany Biden on his trip abroad to Rome this weekend for the Group of 20 summit and Glasgow, Scotland, on Monday for a U.N. climate summit.

Psaki had planned to travel with the president but scrapped the trip just as he was set to depart for Europe after learning that members of her household had tested positive for COVID-19.

“Since then, I have quarantined and tested negative (via PCR) for COVID on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday," Psaki said in a statement. “However, today, I tested positive for COVID."

Psaki, who is fully vaccinated, said she is only exhibiting mild symptoms.

“While I have not had close contact in person with the President or senior members of the White House staff since Wednesday – and tested negative for four days after that last contact — I am disclosing today’s positive test out of an abundance of transparency," Psaki said.

OMG.  When it was thought I would need a transplant, I weighed 63 pounds, and I was told I wasn't in bad enough shape to get one, and couldn't take the surgery if I did.  I had some really ****ty doctors, it took an infectious disease specialist to figure out the problem (strep infection and I'm just fine.)  I swear that the hospital administrator was trying to kill me.  I know her name and I post about her, she's a wretched B-WORD.

I can't even imagine your dilemma.  Stay safe.

Denial is crazy.

I have relatives who also passed from not getting vaccinated and the stigma is crazy. They feel shame catching but also oblivious to the repercussions until it’s too late.

In stride. We’ve taken this virus seriously from day 1. We’ve always feared this as an outcome. Grandma went back to the hospital against her wishes today, not looking good. Found out my FIL “powered through it” and went back to work last weekend, prob gave it to other people. MIL is miserable on day 11 of her illness. We’re hoping not to get “a phone call” anytime now.

My worry is that, out of pride/ideology, they will try to ride it out at home. That’s the worst thing you can do. There are some therapeutics that work best if given early.

We’re in an informational black hole, because they don’t want us to know they are laid out by this virus.

We were supposed to go pumpkin carving at my wife’s sister’s house. She cancelled it the day of saying “everybody was sick”. My wife finally pulled it out of her that they all had Covid.

Worse is grandma is 91 and her mom and aunt didn’t tell any of the siblings until 7 days into it. The old woman is on oxygen when she doesn’t have Covid. They didn’t think to tell her children just in case they needed to say goodbye.

Part of it is my mother-in-law and FIL def are the ones that got grandma sick.

That’s what Im worried about. Getting treatment early is better than late.

sorry about your relatives. We’ve been on the outs with them since 2018(?). They went hard for all the Q conspiracy theories.

I know...my niece (who is normally one of the brightest and most organized people I know) is an ER nurse, has a toddler, and won't get vaccinated.

Oh, and she has an eye disease that will eventually make her go blind.  Let's just throw everything at the fan and see how far it goes?  Beyond frustrating.

So sorry, Doc & El.  I'm sure everything is stressful, on top of life itself.  Hang in there.

It's a soap opera. Sorry to be unloading here but I'm dumbfounded by how this is unfolding. Grandma has it worst among all the infected (obviously) and her care has been bungled. Probably mostly through denial of the situation and potential severity of this virus. Today is Day 11 for her and she is JUST being moved to a hospital. This is a 91 year old woman who wheels around an oxygen tank with her 24/7  to begin with.

Mother-in-law is still down with COVID on day 14 now. Now she acknowledges that "this COVID thing is nothing to mess around with." But also her psychological state is not good because she knows she gave her mom COVID. The aunt, who cleans houses for a living, is most likely an asymptomatic carrier she's still doing her job and going into houses of unsuspecting people.
