Coronavirus: World risks 'biblical' famines due to pandemic - UN

The world is at risk of widespread famines "of biblical proportions" caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the UN has warned.

David Beasley, head of the World Food Programme (WFP), said urgent action was needed to avoid a catastrophe.

A report estimates that the number suffering from hunger could go from 135 million to more than 250 million.

Those most at risk are in 10 countries affected by conflict, economic crisis and climate change, the WFP says.

The fourth annual Global Report on Food Crises highlights Yemen, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Nigeria and Haiti.

In South Sudan, 61% of the population was affected by food crisis last year, the report says.

Southern governors create a Covid-19 coalition and experts fear a 'perfect storm'

TALLAHASSEE — Republican governors across the Southeast are teaming up to reopen the region’s economy, even as they lack the testing to know how rapidly the coronavirus is spreading.

One health expert called the political decision a “perfect storm” for the virus to reassert itself.

The newly formed coalition includes Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi, a part of the country that has underfunded health systems, as well as high rates of obesity, diabetes and other illnesses that amplify the deadliness of the coronavirus.

And unlike their peers in New York, New Jersey and other Northeastern states that have been working cooperatively since last week to restart their economies, the six in the South have lagged on testing and social distancing measures.

“If you put these states together, there is a perfect storm for a massive epidemic peak later on,” said Jill Roberts of the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health.

Are you joking?

The test is different.

Leaning into some herp-derp “cats get tests but I can’t” stuff is nonsense.

You are not a cat.

I'm not leaning into any herp-derp stuff.  Perhaps you could tell me the technical difference between the tests, rather than just saying cats and humans are different.

A plausibile explanation is these tests were done by academics at universities who would not/are not authorized to do human testing.

Last I checked, we still have not marshalled  the resoruces of university labs do to Covid-19 testing in humans.

What is different about it?  They're both testing for the same virus.

Clearly you don't know and can't provide an answer.

From what I could find

Testing performed on animals may be based on the published tests used in people, however, reagents are available that are not required for testing people. The NVSL and National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) laboratories are using reagents for testing animals that are not required for testing in people.

This tells me that there are more requirements (stringency) for the human test, not that the scientific basis of the test is different between cats and people.  So my question was valid.

My reenactment of that interview with the Vegas mayor:

"So you're saying you're going to punch me"

"Not at all. What I'm saying is that I want my fist to accelerate through the air and make contact with your head. Completely different."

"So you're saying that you think people should be able to speed"

"Of course not. I'm simply saying that people should be able to go over the posted limit. I don't know where you get this nonsense"

"So you're saying you're going to rob a house"

"I never said that. I'd never do that. Please stop putting words in my mouth. I'm just saying that if I see a nice place I will forcibly enter and remove certain things so that I can sell them later. I really don't see why you can't follow the points I'm making here"

No.

10000 people have already done the same “cats get tests, where are my tests?” clownshow on social media since the first zoo tiger tested positive last week.

Youre 10000+1.   There’s nothing here...let it go.

As people stay home, Earth turns wilder and cleaner

An unplanned grand experiment is changing Earth.

As people across the globe stay home to stop the spread of the new coronavirus, the air has cleaned up, albeit temporarily. Smog stopped choking New Delhi, one of the most polluted cities in the world, and India’s getting views of sights not visible in decades. Nitrogen dioxide pollution in the northeastern United States is down 30%. Rome air pollution levels from mid-March to mid-April were down 49% from a year ago. Stars seem more visible at night.

Researchers are tracking dramatic drops in traditional air pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide, smog and tiny particles. These types of pollution kill up to 7 million people a year worldwide, according to Health Effects Institute president Dan Greenbaum.

The air from Boston to Washington is its cleanest since a NASA satellite started measuring nitrogen dioxide,in 2005, says NASA atmospheric scientist Barry Lefer. Largely caused by burning of fossil fuels, this pollution is short-lived, so the air gets cleaner quickly.

Compared to the previous five years, March air pollution is down 46% in Paris, 35% in Bengaluru, India, 38% in Sydney, 29% in Los Angeles, 26% in Rio de Janeiro and 9% in Durban, South Africa, NASA measurements show.

Q: "So you're saying you want the casinos and hotels to open in the middle of a pandemic, exposing the people you govern to a highly contagious and lethal virus?"

A: "I didn't say that. What I said was that I wanted to open the casinos and hotels in the middle of what people claim is a pandemic but I don't think it is, and I want to use our proud citizens as a control group that will prove me right."

Q: "So you would go to the casinos yourself and walk among the crowds on the floor?"

A: "Are you insane? No. I have a family, Anderson."
