The Browns have had the courage to defer a total rebuild to one draft.  Something several of us have been begging for for years and years on this forum.  (Instead of a first round pick in 2009, 2010, 2011.... go for 3 first round picks in 2012 and an additional 3 2nd round picks that you got in a trade., e.g.)

1.  The Browns have 12 picks in this years draft.  5 in the first 2 rounds.  1 and 4, overall

2.  The Browns hired a non football guy to run their operations.  In this case, Paul DePodesta who you all know from Jonah Hills character in Moneyball

3.  The Browns invested in the best GM they could find in John Dorsey, who in turn is investing in more front office talent, poaching Alonzo Highsmith from the Packers

4.  Projected $118 million in cap space

The Browns have the best upcoming draft position in the history of the league, the most talented front office in the league, and a non football ivy league economist running the show and looking for value in systems that by and large are being built by aging ex jocks and assorted dumbos.  He wont have a hard time, especially with $118 million in cap space

What a time to be a Browns fan.  I would take 1-31 in a second to be where they are.  After all, they have as much to show for it as we do.

This is what the Redskins have needed since 2006.  Two straight years of SUCK with a front office smart enough to leverage that suckage into future value.  Instead, we are on the perpetual 7-9 merry go round, always with limited cap space, always putting another band aid on the terminal patient.

They JUST fired a non-football guy that ran their operations, did they not?

The Browns offered a 2nd rounder for Smith (they have two in the upcoming draft). When the Chiefs asked for more, the Browns said thanks for your time, conversation over. That new front office is already light years more competent than ours. They know how, when, whether, and who to deal. Unlike Allen, they aren't going to jettison young, promising talent, particularly when it's a kind of talent the team has been in need of for years. Kudos to the Browns.

Smith wasn't going there. Ever.

“They’ve got nowhere to go but up," Smith said with a laugh, before sarcastically adding, "1-31 over the last two years just sounds amazing.”

Players don't get to choose where they're sent. Ask Fuller.

btw, what's the story behind the "UK Skins Fan '74" name? Are you from the UK or currently living there? I'm in Brussels, but spend a fair amount of time in London, Canterbury, and Manchester.

Well this just got more interesting

Browns hiring former Redskins GM as draft consultant

http://nfltraderumors.co/browns-hiring-former-redskins-gm-scot-mccloughan-personnel-consultant/

Do we know if this is basically just an exclusive rights deal on his scouting service or is he a full blown employee? Any terms of the deal? Just curious what they do with him. Also is he still being paid by us or is that being determined by the grievance settlement?

Yes but his comment that Kirk isn't "special" probably means he won't be advising the Browns front office to deal with the Redskins and spend a boatload of picks for him in a trade deal

True enough. If I was Kirk though I wouldn’t sign any kind of tag if going to the Browns was a part of the deal. Think I’d just take a sabbatical year and count my 45m hahaha

He joined them..... so I think on staff.

They hired 3 former Packers execs (John Dorsey, Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith), and now Scot !

They got 12 picks in the draft, they can be excited ! Good luck to them. Oh Lord I just realized that we might dethrone them from the number one laughing stock seat :(

Kurt to the Browns ! :silly:

1 draft can't fix Cleveland. They have 5 picks in the first 2 rounds, to leverage themselves into position in future years. Just because the picks are there doesn't mean they won't look to pick up more value in 2019.

Who here remembers these picks ups?

2012 Draft picks

1. Trent Richardson (1st rounder) "Explosive power and will add big plays in the run game"

2. Brandon Weeden (1st rounder) "All the tools to start immediately in the NFL and help win games."

3. Josh Gordon (2nd rounder) "A superb addition of talent. Weeden has his #1 receiver locked in for the next 10 years"

3. Mitchell Schwartz (2nd rounder) "This guy is going to be blocking for Richardson and pass-protecting Weeden, a juggernaut at the tackle position"

4. (8) Draft picks in rounds (3-7) - "An infusion of young talent on a Browns roster that is looking extremely talented"

Reality:

None of these guys are on the Browns (with the exception of Gordon who has been a train-wreck), most aren't in the NFL anymore. It's just way too insane to be talking about their draft and their future like it's going to magically change all of the sudden because they have ammunition. They have no clue what they're doing.

At least they are trying to change by stock piling picks getting pro talent evaluators etc... we still seem to think trading for aging vets will get us somewhere

I don't think anyone is arguing that the Browns have been anything short of a **** show for as long as any of us can remember.

The difference is they've invested a lot into building a premier FO to fire that ammunition.  They also have over 100M in cap space.

Uhm, hiring an entirely new FO is not “magic”. You can expect change there because of the qualifications of whom they hired.

So were the Redskins to hire the exact same FO as the Browns just did, and some fool put up Vinny and Dan’s 2008 draft, then stated, “see, they have no clue what they’re doing”... you’d accept that?

I mean, how is that in any way relevant?

That's cool and all. I hope people are aware that over half of it is roll-over money. A giant percentage of this is revenue saving cash that doesn't get spent. This is what happens when you cut guys like Haden and have to eat **** on the field for a long time. The best they can do with this is rent players, and they're not exactly an attractive destination, but money helps. They're in long-term draft position, hence why the development of their FO - so the cap will place a lot less of a factor then what is being assumed here.

The Browns have been **** for decades. The Browns are currently in the midst of one of the worst on the field performances strung together in consecutive years. The Factory of sadness can hire whoever they want,

Just because they hired a baseball economic major and former Packers FO personnel doesn't mean anything. Do they have potential upside? Sure. I'm totally willing to let you be a man and put your money where your mouth is against me in this topic.

As of now, they are compiling a dream team FO.

It took Haslam about 5 years to realize that he was an idiot trying to run his own team without a clue, something Snyder hasn't had the intelligence to ponder in almost 20!

The Browns will be a contender in 2 years, the Redskins? :rofl89:
