Election 2018 Thread (An Adult Finally Has the Gavel)

While it was a good night for the Democrats it was also a very good night for the Republicans. Increased numbers in the Senate is terrifying as we know that they will stack the judiciary with unprincipled, corrupt, and normally unacceptable (by the standards of the bar association and their fellow judges) picks. Prepare for ideology to replace the rule of law.

Not so sure it's a great night for GOP. I would be concerned about Florida and Texas. I would be concerned about midwest and Maine as far as Senate map in 2020. I would be worried about Dems being able to gain their voice in national policy discussions again.

I would be concerned with Trump indictments and investigations...

The national vote margin is going to be +9 Democrat, in a time of relative peace and economic prosperity. This is a clear repudiation of what a stain Donald Trump is on American politics.

A majority of Americans now live in states with Democratic governors. Across the board, progressive policy reforms won at the ballot box with the exception of Marijuana legalization in ND.

Pretty much all the major economic centers of this country are now represented by liberals, including the suburbs of major cities.

Anyone spinning this as a good night for the GOP is buying the Trumpian nonsense.

The only liberal disappointment was Florida. No one in their right minds should have expected Donnelly, McCaskill and Heitkamp to win in states that voted +20 Trump. The GOP can try to spin this but everyone saw Republican gains in the Senate in 2018 even prior to 2016.

The story of the night is that this country is becoming more polarized. Trump’s divisive nonsense was repudiated all over the urban/suburban parts of the country. At the same time, he’s pretty much transformed the GOP into the party of rural, angry voters.

This will help the GOP in the Senate but look what happened across state and House elections. This was a House map designed to ensure GOP control. With Dems in control of state governance across the US, there won’t be a 2011 gerrymander to save Republicans in the face of sweeping national unpopularity.

Except while Trump can and probably should be impeached (take your pick of causes Russia, graft, etc.) There's no way a McConnell Senate would remove him no matter what was uncovered and how bad it will be. Also, I fear for the state of our judiciary.

We knew taking the Senate was going to be difficult. Nothing in the Senate has changed, the GOP has done exactly what it wanted for two years, that continues, at least now there is a check in the House.

BTW...this happenened

This is just the first time Dems have thrown a punch in a fight they were already getting beat in. Long way back from where we are and still an up hill battle for them.

They need to make sure they are guarded against complacency, for one. The people who just won and the voters who put them there. The biggest obstacle Dems have right now is themselves. I absolutely can see them resting on their laurels and not taking the fight seriously from here on out. Just like they did after Obama won, they might tap out of the fight and lose the rest of the way. We will see if they learned that lesson!

Second Dems now are in position to HAVE TO move more to the center. I know alot of us dont like that but they won big yesterday thanks to Republican votes in Republican districts doing to Democrats if I understand correctly. That means if you take these peoples votes and go super libtard socialist nightmare they will make you pay the next time around and you will never get those votes again in their lifetime. Gotta know your base, and in this case I think that means the center.

But I'm not sure about any of this. Just my thoughts.

Someone here posted that both sides would claim victory.  And neither would be right.

Smart guy.

Hmmm I actually think both sides are right to claim victory.

The Repubs were screwed and they knew that. But they won where they could and got stronger in the Senate. They fended off a bunch of angry Dems and kept power in 2 of 3 branches of government. That's a victory all things considered.

The Dems won what they had to, which was alot, and they learned that voting works. They are in position to **** Trump from one side and work with him from the other and whatever the result they can blame it on him cause he wont respond well to it. That's a good position to be in and that's a victory.
