For Biden to Prevail, He'll Need to Survive a Trump Onslaught Targeted to Working-Class Whites

It's too soon to say whether last week's RNC made any dent in the polls. But it did make clear President Trump's chief line of attack going forward: after months of drifting between calling Joe Biden senile or soft on China, Trump and Republicans have settled on recasting Biden as a "Trojan Horse for the radical left" who would promote lawlessness and disorder, "abolish" the suburbs and crash stock markets.

It's an admission that Trump needs to distract attention away from voters' top concern, COVID-19. And Trump's rhetorical fusillades against "Democrat-run cities" are a tell of a fall strategy heavy on pumping up his base from 2016: small town, working-class whites.

So far this summer, Biden has polled spectacularly in suburbs — even historically GOP ones in the Sun Belt — thanks to his strength among college-educated whites. In an average of live-interview polls taken in August, Biden led Trump among that group 56 percent to 39 percent, compared to Hillary Clinton's 50 percent to 38 percent lead in final 2016 polls. But he's also polling impressively among whites without college degrees: August polls show Biden trailing Trump 35 percent to 57 percent among that group, narrower than Clinton's 30 percent to 58 percent deficit in 2016.

However, against the backdrop of civil unrest in Kenosha and Portland, Biden's support in the latter group is more fragile. Although Biden, a Catholic from Scranton, has long been considered something of a patron saint of blue-collar Democrats, blue-collar whites tend to pay less attention to politics per day than others and live in pro-Trump settings where the local news and information ecosystem, driven by Facebook and other social media sites, is much friendlier to Trump's view of the world.

It's in those places where Trump's onslaught of attacks, including falsely accusing Biden of wanting to "defund the police," stands the best chance of resonating and where Biden will need to claw to hang on to the voters who currently find him plainly acceptable.

This entire "he isn't suggesting doing anything unlawful" pretzel logic is ridiculous.  If you vote on a absentee or standard mail in voting ballot you have cast your vote. PERIOD.  It is irrelevant whether you show up to a polling place and they can personally tell you that your vote has been counted.  This madness needs to stop.  Also McEnany then tries to add in "Dems want to...." the host should have stopped her mid sentence and just said STOP IT, the Dems have zero to do with what Trump is suggesting his supporters should be doing, which is absolutely against the law.  The Dems have suggest doing nothing of the sort that breaks the law.

Also, Barr on Wolf Blitzer, forgive me because I didn't see the whole thing, but if Barr seems so concerned with election integrity why did Wolf not ask, and follow up, and demand an answer on what Barr's justice department is doing to ensure the mail in voting system is safe & secure, if they truly hold this belief about it being vunerable.   What a frickin' farce that entire thing was.

Jesus, these battleground polls seem to sorta be all over the place right now.

And Rasmussen can mostly be disregarded. Or you just add 4-5 points for the Dem because they're consistently pretty far outside of most polls with their +R leaning.

Agree that Rasmussen has a house effect that is 4-5 points right.  Other than the Monmouth poll in PA, I haven't seen anything too concerning.  For example, Biden's lead has narrowed in FL since July 1, but it is larger than it was on June 1.  Same for Michigan and PA. Trump hasn't had an actual lead in the poll averages in any of those states since April (in FL, by 0.1%).

All according to 538's poll tracker.

I think ads against Trump should paint him as a paranoid crazy person.  Not imply it, say it outright.  It will only make him more paranoid and desperate.  A man that’s losing his mind.  Trump is spinning wild conspiracy theories, bragging about simple cognitive evaluations, and mumbling about shadowy villains.

Don’t pull punches, the mans a nut.

is there a sound byte of him saying “I’m not crazy”?  If so I’d play it then him talking about shadowy people.  Play it again and have him saying “person woman man camera tv” play it again “presidential harassment.  Play it again “bleach as a cure maybe”. Etc etc etc

run these ads all damn day until the cash runs out.
