PCS
6'3"HEIGHT 33 5/8"ARM LENGTH 286LBS.WEIGHT 9 3/8"HANDS http://www.nfl.com/draft/2017/profiles/jonathan-allen?id=2557844 Quote OVERVIEW Allen won the 2016 Chuck Bednarik and Bronco Nagurski Award as the nation's top defender on the nation's top defense in 2016 (69 tackles, 16 TFL, led team with 10.5 sacks). He repeated as first-team All-SEC following an excellent junior year where he finished second in the SEC with 12 sacks (14.5 TFL, 4 PBU). The 2012 Virginia Gatorade High School Player of the Year contributed early in his first year, playing regularly as a freshman reserve (16 tackles, three TFL) and then stepped into the starting lineup as a sophomore (11.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks). ANALYSIS STRENGTHS Taken to school by Alabama coaching staff and is technically proficient in all phases. Plays outside and inside. Quick off the ball. Superior hand-grappler who can control the wrists and forearms of his opponents with accurate hand placement over wild chops and slaps. Varied approach as a pass rusher. Excellent athletic ability and possesses flexible hips. Able to coordinate hands, feet, and hips to climb over the edge against tackles. Has play strength and quickness to rip through the weak inside post of a guard. Can club with either hand to soften the edge of a blocker. Has posted consistent quarterback pressure and sack numbers despite playing in less than half of the defensive snaps. Alert against the run. Quick to diagnose the mesh point against zone reads and gives chase to the ball. Strong on the edge. Has speed down the line to close down back-side cuts. Feet never seem to stop. Vocal leader willing to give strong corrections to teammates in practice. Came to Alabama as an outside linebacker and runs like it when he's in the open field. PCS
More info on the young man. CBSSports profile. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/2082709/jonathan-allen Quote A three-year starter in Alabama's 3-4 base defense, Allen was schemed inside and outside in the Tide's multiple fronts, lining up primarily as a base end before kicking inside on passing downs. His role and impact has expanded in each of the last three seasons. "His diversity to play outside, rush inside, play the point, makes him a pretty special guy," said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. "We want more players like Jonathan Allen." A five-star defensive end recruit out of high school, spent his true freshman season as a back-up in all 13 games, recording 16 tackles and 3.0 tackles for loss. Allen worked his way into the starting rotation as a sophomore in 2014, finishing with 33 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. His role expanded as a junior (11 starts) with a team-best 14.5 tackles for loss and 12.0 sacks, adding 36 tackles and two forced fumbles to earn First Team All-SEC honors. A projected first round pick, Allen passed on the NFL to return to Tuscaloosa in 2016 and had his best season with 69 tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks and was awarded unanimous All-American and First Team All-SEC honors. He also took home the Bronko Nagurski (Best defensive player), Chuck Bednarik (Best defensive player) and Ted Hendricks (Best defensive end) Awards and was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year - also finished seventh in the 2016 Heisman Trophy voting (highest finish for an Alabama defensive player since 1962). Allen isn't a sudden rusher who screams off the edge, but is a pass rush threat due to his powerful hands and punch to control the point of attack, giving himself options while reading the ball. He converts speed to power with contact balance and body control while also showing the lateral agility to knife through gaps and out-leverage blockers. Allen has scheme-diverse ability and will benefit from a creative defensive coordinator who moves him around and doesn't just leave him on the edge, similar to how the Seattle Seahawks use Michael Bennett. Allen is one of the most talented prospects in the 2017 draft class and deserving of top-three overall consideration if the medicals (shoulder) check out. *Click Link For Strengths and Weaknesses. *
Forehead
Certainly surprised, I never thought we'd have a sniff of this guy. And he's a local boy too, Stone Bridge if I recall.
carex
well, this affects the players we've signed to. I imagine now McGee does spend some time on the nose
Probos
I did not expect this, but I'm very happy he's a Skin. Hopefully the reports of "shoulder issues" are,..well, lets just hope it's not an issue. Welcome young man.

TradeTheBeal!
That might be one of the least impressive highlight reels I've ever seen...coverage sacks and unblocked pursuit tackles on rbs. That said, I like the guy and we had to make that pick at 17. I wish him the best!

clskinsfan
Allen was my number 2 player in this draft. We just stole the best DL in this draft. Garrett is a better edge player. But he takes plays off. Allen is a nonstop monster. And SMART as hell. Watch him diagnose screens. WE ABSOLUTELY STOLE THIS MAN. Enjoy this:

Burgold
Apparently never missed a game or a practice despite shoulder concerns according to 980 interview. Also love the fact that he is experienced in the 3-4 so we don't have to project how he can do in 3-4. We've seen it.

NoCalMike
I hope he is to Kerrigan what we thought Kerrigan was to Orakpo. On paper we have drafted a stud, instead of the "compliment to the stud" like our front office has seem to have done a lot lately. Here's hoping! scruffylookin
Such a great pick. So thrilled we didn't get cute and do something dumb. Stayed put and drafted an elite talent on the line. Have not been this happy on draft night in a long time.
RandyHolt
Awesome, I am glad we drafted a guy that we don't have to ask to lose weight, to learn pass coverage, and change positions. It's about time to start drafting 3-4 guys since we use it as the blueprint for our D, even if we barely use it.

Warhead36
Allen will be a damn good player. He may not have a superstar Warren Sapp like celing but I think he's got a high floor. At the very least he'll be a solid, B to B+ long time starting DL. Best case scenario he's a perennial Pro Bowler. The ONLY issue with him was the alleged shoulder injuries which who really knows how legit those are. He's talented, smart, hard working, impeccable character, comes from a big program, everything you look for he's got. He's going to be a cornerstone on our DL for the next decade. The Consigliere
I'm kind of shocked at the cautiously optimistic posts. This selection, in my view, as of draft day, was the best selection this team has made since Champ Bailey, and semi-bust Lavar Arrington. He was a consensus #1 to #2 overall player in this draft until medical checks. He can play interior DL and he can rush the passer. He can even stop the run. He's already the best defensive lineman we've had since Charles Mann. Outstanding selection. Monumentally lucky to land him at 17, and it just underlines how lucky we were to choke down the stretch against the Panthers and Giants. I'll take those two losses in exchange for a decade of elite, potentially All PRO interior DL play from Allen. He's a building block piece for a DL, and probably the best DL we've had in 25 years. No joke.

zCommander
Why am I hearing that he had shoulder injury and that maybe an issue. Per Chris Russell on radio about 30 minutes ago. He is saying why the Redskins keeps on picking up injury issue players? Doctson last year and Malcom Kelley before that. I don't follow college football so please let me know if this is an issue?
