Destino
Judging by this protest I'm watching in DC the answer to what they keep in the backpacks is plenty of milk. The dairy protesters must be facing a serious psychological struggle right now. The DC protesters are nearing full retreat. They didn't have the numbers tonight and police have pushed them more than a block out of the park.

But i still have alot of friends and colleagues there and in hong kong. Things were changing drastically to the point that I had to leave. What you all have heard about the humanitarian issues are but a footnote into the ethnic genocide that has been happening there for years. Its an Orwellian dystopia now. I weep for them because they are no different than us, they want the same things and have the same ideals, but have no choice. The upper class owns them, and the CCP bows to no one. We have a choice now. Sad as it is, Peaceful protest against an authoritarian regime does not work. The only peaceful way to change things here in this country is to target the checkbooks of the elite, but we cant get organized because every time a leader tries they get marginalized in the media. The second option is what is to come.

I notified my parents who are older that they should take precautions bc there is a chance she could have contracted COVID. My sister visits my parents weekly as do i. Prior to today, my parents and I have not gone anywhere outside of picking up work from our respective work centers and the grocery store for the past 3 months in order to stay safe from the virus. However, after today, she destroyed that and wasn't going to tell my parents that she attended a mass gathering. My parents are obviously concerned about their health. She gets into a heated argument on why I had told my parents where she went. I don't care for what she did, I care for my health and my parents health. Was I Wrong?? Nope. She was wrong to not tell your parents herself and isolating herself from them for at least 14 days or until she gets tested and cleared. 1

A quick answer but needs to move out of this thread - prejudice to me is situational thoughts (not necessarily towards a race) vs racism of having a superior mindset against another race regardless of situation. example of 2 separate prejudices (I’ll fit in both races for the example) I’d say would be avoiding walking by a group of white bikers anytime and avoiding a group of blacks in the projects. Both of those are things you’ve heard about and anticipate but doesn’t mean you dislike the race or groups as a whole but ones you put your guard up around in certain situations. theres also bigotry that I probably should have used earlier over prejudice (where trump more so fits in in my opinion) which is where more discriminatory issues come in that folks have referenced. none of them are good but everyone is a prejudice in one way or another (doesn’t have to be racial)

Went to Beijing, Cheng Du, Juangzhou and Shanghai Never going back - really did not enjoy the culture (spitting everywhere, pushing past people without even looking - one guy barged into and knocked my 3 year old daughter over and didn't even look down to see what he'd hit until I shoved him). You're on the money with the Orwellian dystopia - the CCTV there is nuts, but it's so sophisticated too - The billboards posting mugshots of people who honk their horn etc is insane. My partner's aunt's car got scratched, and within 30mins of her reporting it, the police had identified the culprit through CCTV, tracked him down using the road cameras and arrested him. Insane. It takes a while to get used to the callousness of the culture. But there is a lot to enjoy about the Chinese, and their culture. The pushing and shoving comes from an acceptance that millions of people are around you at all times everywhere, and empathy is not a trait that is taught under an oppressive regime. Empathy, religion, free thought are all stamped out hard. The people want what we had. What we had was ruined by the upper class wanting what their oppressive counterparts achieved. (btw: the spitting comes from a general ethos taught at a young age that it isnt healthy to hold in a sneeze or spit or whatever)

Mooka
40 minutes ago, DCSaints_fan said: What do you think about citizen oversight of police. One of the major obstacles to getting bad officers removed, is that you are trusting them to investigate themselves. But what if you had some oversight board that was independent of the normal executive branch. Its gotta be done nationally right? Many areas already have some version of this to use as a roadmap. Further, its clear to me we need some type of community based police force without arrest authority in this country that is unarmed. (some sort of peace-force) The authority to use lethal force, use lethal weapons and conduct arrests or detain people by force should only be for higher trained specialists. Now before everyone starts on the obvious problems of some wussy unarmed authority in America vs armed criminals on the streets; you gotta see the entire concept... I'm visualizing we replace the everyday street cop with basically a community peace-officer of some sort. (basically a Firefighter or a Paramedic, a big red Firetruck or a white Ambulance, etc) So everyday, instead of an officer pulling you over for speeding, you have some sort of Ambulance/safety vehicle that helps control traffic. The cop on the street is there to serve the community vs arrest criminals. 911 would call in a Peace-Officer/EMS vs an Armed Policeman in most cases. Etc. This might seem ridiculous to some, that criminals/crime would run amuck, but I think overall the net would be positive. (factoring Community+Crime+Health) I'm also trying to think how you'd handle all the obvious problems but I'm a few drinks in.... and maybe I'm just drunk and rambling lol. I'm on to something here though.
visionary
Cops aren't going away and most Americans won't even consider that idea. Now if we want to talk about lessening their responsibilities and having community groups play a role in taking over or supplementing, overseeing some things, that seems like something that could be discussed. Destino
It's weird watching some people run up to the police line and pose for a picture. I'm not sure I'd risk a rubber bullet at point blank range for the Gram.

Mooka
I don't mean cops go away, I mean an actual cop that carries a gun and can arrest people be a more specialized position. Whereas, say, the person who goes in to handle domestic violence, or a drug overdose, or whatever non-violent everyday problem on the street is a peace-officer. (that doesn't make sense, I probably mean un-armed type violence) Edited June 1, 2020 by Mooka

A good idea, but impossible to enforce now. Almost all major and supporting cities are rampant with homelessness and drug problems due to inadequate mental and physical healthcare. They pose a problem. People with low paying jobs and no education pose a problem. People who are doomed to low income housing pose a problem. People that befall any medical condition without an employer based healthcare buy in pose a problem. A mall cop cant touch this. Its looking for a bandaid that can fix a broken spine. This is a class issue. Our system needs fixed.
