The Official Washington Basketball Thread: Wizards, Mystics etc

I don't follow High School players or recruiting and I'll admit that I haven't followed college ball as closely the last few years as I used to. But I do know that Beal wasn't a popular guy about 2 months ago. Now all of the sudden, he's the next Ray Allen. As always, I'll stick to my tried and true "Prove it to me Wizards and Beal" until I'm wrong. Sad thing is, I haven't been wrong about this team in years.

Everyone here has reservations, but I don't get why you are so down on Beal. The Wiz just drafted a kid who is a good shooter, but will still make the extra pass to the open shooter, plays defense, rebounds and is a high character player. Everything that we could ask for in a shooting guard unlike the clowns we've had here recently. On top of which, this team is better having gotten rid of some of the players from last year (hopefully Blatche will follow out the door) and replacing them with solid veterans that will defend, rebound and contribute some offensively.

Beal's comparison to Ray Allen is due to his shooting stroke - which is picture perfect. His % wasn't great at UF, but folks are thinking that with mechanics as good as his, there isn't any way that he won't improve going forward.

I was also reading that the UF starting lineup was a bit of a mess. Beal was all over the place and even had to play some SF. Obviously, that won't be the case with the Wizards. However, it does explain some of the erracticness (yea, I made that word up) of his stats.

I can't wait to see him and Wall together.

He did play out of position a lot at Florida and after some growing pains, really came on as the year progressed. His play was a little spotty early in the season, but that happens a lot with freshmen. From what I heard, he was tremendous in workouts with everyone, which is why about half of the NBA was trying to trade up with Charlotte and us to get him. While we have a lot of question marks, the biggest one was at SG, and we just filled it with the best player at that position. We did not overdraft to get him, he is a great charachter guy, he plays defense, he can get to the hole...I don't really know what there is to not like here. I love MKG, but as things worked out, he was not an option. I love T-Rob, but there were bigger holes on this team as it is presently constructed. I would have been OK with Barnes, but he did not sound excited about playing the 2, and that is what he would have been doing at least part-time here.

I can understand being annoyed by the second round pick, but I really don't see much to be upset with about Beal. I think he is what this team needed more than anything else, it was a smart pick and he went exactly where he should have. Just my opinion.

So sick of hearing local sports-radio guys ragging on Vesely. It's so obvious that they rarely, if ever, watch Wizards games. That or they don't have a clue about what they're watching. Their entire opinion is based on a 30-second scan of the box score.

But whatever. It's not like they're being paid to talk about the Wizards or anything.

The shooting is what has everyone excited about Beal. Really his shot is like basketball porn. Perfect mechanics every single time he pulls up and lightning quick release. But Beal isn't just a shooter though. He's a complete player. He defends nearly as well as he shoots and he's a fantastic rebounder.

He's just a terrific all around player. We got a gem.

I can't say how unbelievably excited I am to watch him and John play next year.

StillUnknown posted this earlier and it got buried. It deserves to be posted again:

I guess just not knowing or seeing enough of him to trust that we made the right choice. I know we needed a SG, I know we needed a guy who can shoot from long range, but I'm not seeing a superstar player who can elevate the team to the next level. We've been a jump-shooting team for a while now and I would have preferred getting an inside player that can work in the paint.

Very few local sports radio guys in this town can talk basketball intelligently at all, let alone the wizards. they clearly don't watch.

I kinda wanted TRob, but I guess the trade, plus having Booker, Vesely, and Singleton made that impossible. The idea of getting the best shooter in the draft is appealing.

TRob would be a bust in this area. Im convinced. The DC nightlife is too much, and he is local. Might see dude at a TCB concert in Capitol Heights right before a game.

Ditto on the local sports radio guys. They are clueless. Especially Loverro and Sheehan, they are the worst.

Sheehan isn't entirely clueless but either Loverro simply doesn't know a thing about basketball or he's a very convincing actor. He and Czabe interviewed Bradley Beal earlier today and it was painful.

I would prefer them to not even cover basketball at this point. No coverage is better than ****ty coverage.

If they're going to cover the Wizards, just let LaRon Profit do all the talking.

Sheehan doesn't like the Beal selection at all.

He thinks that they're 10-11 players in this draft who'll have better careers.

He's in love with Harrison Barnes. :(

One of those guys on 980 read an email I sent them today, I don't remember who though, probably in the 10 oclock hour. But yeah, I listen to them for the first time in a while today and I was getting pretty angry with how clueless some of them are.

Big ditto on that. Profit is great.

So anyway, I just realized that there are a couple of Mystics tickets in the grab bag i got at the draft party last night. Anyone notice anything wrong with them?

Please never change Wizards organization.

I'm sorry, but I don't but for an instant that DC's nightlife would make T-Rob prey. He's cut from a VERY different cloth than a bonehead like Blatche or a headcase like another DC Native in Mike Beasley. JUST because he's from DC doesn't mean he'll fall victim to the club scene here in the city. He's responsible and mature beyond his years...on top of it all, the guy takes basketball VERY seriously. For just about any local guy who has the chance to be drafted in the city their from or near, you could say the same thing - "oh, there might be distractions etc etc..." However, I think having a level/good head on your shoulders goes a long way with how you'll turn out as a pro and in the long run, those distractions etc. won't matter. Robinson would have done just fine here....and I hope he has an AMAZING NBA career that lasts a long time. He deserves it.
