Redskins vs Lions Prediction Thread: Ain't no 'Lion' 'Bout It

Their field probably plays more to our strengths than it does to theirs. All of our speed and skill players should excel there. Pretty sure nfl.com shows them giving up 17 passing TD's already this year and surrendering 119+ passer rating to opposing QBs. This is a game that our offense should be able to finally click on all cylinders and as crazy as it sounds I think our defense is much better than there's. Just throw away from Slay and don't underestimate them - they have won against quality opponents the past two weeks.

Heard one guy on the radio today calling the Redskins irratic and not dependable.

Although it was true a few weeks ago, I think they're above that level now.

A solid win, to put the game away is whats needed to get some love for this team. Thing is, they can't go out and stink up the joint the following week. I think if they look competitive throughout the season, we'll be getting some attention.

Detroit is soft against the pass and run but they're decent at getting sacks. This OL must have a good game. If we establish the run, we keep them off the field, control the clock and let Kirk carve them up when he needs to.

If we get blown up at the line and get in a shootout, we likely lose.

Washington - 31

Detroit - 28

28 - 14 Redskins

Lions are more banged up than us

Their defense isn't very good

Teams haven't messed with Norman these last two weeks, and I think it will continue being a trend

I will stand by that we will be fine against teams that don't run the ball well, that's why I think we will win the next two

Cousins throws three touchdowns. Jones has a big run for a touchdown in the first half

Following the formula of the past 4 games, no way we are winning against the kittens. They have a better QB, better looking cheerleaders, play in one hell of an awesome city, they can't run the ball so you know that will get fixed against our D and Cousins having tasted how fun it is to throw pick 6s will try for at least two more.

If you go over to spotrac.com, you can see a nice comparison between the lions and skins (http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/teams/matchup/363-washington-redskins-vs-334-detroit-lions/)

That compares their offense to our offense and you can see that we have a pretty much better offense than theirs. Areas where they beat us, its close. Similarly defense wise we're better than them.

But this comparison isn't one I like since its not off vs off and def vs def. Instead, we can look at our opponents vs them

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/teams/matchup/356-pittsburgh-steelers-vs-334-detroit-lions/

That gives a nice look at how we compare to them. Similarly we can do an analysis of how we compare to the lions opponents. What scares me is that Pittsburgh seems to be the team that compares best to them and we didn't look good against them. But Pitt has a much better running game than Detroit so without that balance I don't know. But Jones could be the best WR we've faced since Brown and that's saying a lot with Dez and OBJ having come through here as well.

Here's the links for the comparison of us to their opponents:

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/teams/matchup/363-washington-redskins-vs-343-los-angeles-rams/

I think the closest match there is the Colts (who they beat), but really our offense is the best they've faced all year and looks to be trouble for them.

well in the iggles thread I was off by a field goal on both ends, I picked skins to win 24-17, actual score was 27-20.. so not bad.
I think the good guys get this one against the porta potty blues as well, defense continues playing well and the offense continues to hum to the tune of 31-24 skins win.

Detroit's secondary is god-awful and our OL is playing well. I think both Kirk and Stafford turn the ball over but the lions make more mistakes than we do in this one.

Speaking of OL, Andrew luck has more yards, td's and pretty much everything else than KC, but he's been sacked a whopping 23 times vs 8 for Kirk. I think the OL continues to open huge holes and the running backs have another big day, play action will be a dagger off the run game this week. Look for Desean to have a huge td catch.

I'm probably more confident than I should be, but Detroit just doesn't scare me.  They have no real running game to speak of, though Theo Riddick does scare me as a receiver out of the backfield.  They have 2-3 good receivers and I'm hoping Norman takes one of them completely out of the game.  Nothing about their defense scares me.  We are better than them in pretty much every category except run defense, and at least we've been trending upward significantly the past few weeks.  Plus, like I just said, they're running game is not scary.

I think we score, a lot.  I'm going 34 for us.  I figure Stafford will get his to everyone not covered by Josh Norman, and Riddick probably gets one out of the backfield.  Maybe a field goal.

34-24 Skins.

@Thinking Skins - Fantastic post. Thank you for posting that :)

About this game. The Lions will be the most one dimensional team we have faced so far this season. They lack a good running game. The Lions current RB situation is horrible, Theo Riddick is the impressive pass catching back but a between the tackles rusher he isn't and he missed last game due to an injury, if he misses this game as well its a huge boost for our chances. I think we see some extended action for Justin Forsett, he didn't play against us when we played Baltimore and was a healthy scratch. Age is a concern with him. If not him then the undrafted rookie Washington will see a lot of work this week. This part of this team shouldn't worry anyone.

That leaves the passing game which honestly should scare all of us. Ever since Jim Bob Cooter took over play calling the Lions and especially Stafford have been rolling and playing great. He is currently 3rd in the league in passer completion rating, 9th in yards per game, 8th in passing yards, and only thrown 4 INTs this season. He is coming off a 4 passing TD game this week and that's his 4th game with at least 3 or more TD's this season already.

I suspect that the passing game will keep the Lions very much in this game and the game is on the road. I think we are due for a road let down. We have won our last two road games this year meaning to win this it requires us to win a third in a row, or a sixth win on the  road if you go back to last season. The last time we had a road winning record that long was back in 1991 when we won the Superbowl. I don't believe this team is nearly as good as that one. Winning 3 or even 6 in a row on the road is a very tall order for any team to pull off. History shows the last 3 games the Lions have won against us and we haven't beaten them on the road since 2008.

I suspect that we will try and control the clock, playing our three RB headed monster to keep that offense off the field but it won't be very successful. I like the Lions passing game a lot this week. A shootout in looming and sadly I think the over of 48.5 hits. Every time the Lions games have gone over 48.5 combined points they won, minus a road Green Bay game. The Vegas line opened at 51.0 points and the public is betting the under hard driving it down to where it is currently 48.5. As the week goes on I think the sharps realize that Cousins on the road is not nearly as effective as he is at home (Like Brees like Ben R like others) and drives that number back up so 48.5 is a good spot to get in. I personally will parlay the over and the Lions giving a point this week before they bet it higher.

The Lions win this game by the score of 31-24.

Hope I'm wrong just being honest about how I see this. Please don't hate the messenger just too many things stacking up against us this week.

Awww Deepthreat, you took my score!

No matter, you can have the hat; I'll take the Win.

Here's where I stand:

We will beat them.  We will beat them because when we're right, they are our homecoming team.  The Washington Redskins are, and forever will be, Superior to the detroit lions.  They know this in their bones.  Sunday, our Offense erupts on them with the fury of an active volcano.  The game will not be close, but they will score several times late to make the outcome look respectable.  But we will own them as we always have (recent history notwithstanding), and the universe shall be correctly aligned back into balance.

I honestly do not know. This has been a wacky year in the NFL. Any team is capable of winning (even the Browns) and anything can happen.

Therefore, I've reserved this space for my future prediction

Wow!!!  I too honestly don't know!  I have kept expectations low, but I am tempted to jump in with both feet.  Beating Detroit on the road would be a big deal for me.  Especially if the defense shows up and plays well.  The defense needs to play well for a second straight week for me to begin to believe in it.  The defense needs to keep improving on its third-down conversions.

A 23-20 win would be more impressive than a 33-30 win.  Regardless, I too will make a prediction later in the week.
