Baylor declined to respond to reports Tuesday that President and Chancellor Kenneth Starr, best known for his investigation of the Clinton administration, has been fired by the Board of Regents in the wake of a sexual assault scandal involving the school and its football team.
 
The possible dismissal was first reported by Chip Brown of Scout’s HornsDigest.com and later by Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods.com and KCEN’s Nikki Laurenzo.
 
Starr did not immediately return an email request from The Post seeking comment Tuesday.

Baylor University responded Tuesday to reports that the school’s board of regents voted to fire school President Ken Starr amid mounting pressure over how the school has handled reports of rape and assault by football players, saying no decision has yet been made.
 
The Texas university said its governing board was still considering the results of an internal investigation into the matter.
 
When asked about reports that the board of regents had voted to fire Starr, university spokeswoman Lori Fogleman told the Associated Press in an email, "Ken Starr is president and chancellor of Baylor University." 
 
The school reportedly fired President and Chancellor Kenneth Starr. It needs to fire football coach Art Briles.

I was thinking about the guys who wanted us to hire Briles as HC to help RG3 be all he can be. Imagine how much fun this deal could be in the stadium and in our "traditional" media/team/fan base environment.

 

Assuming this story does become a bigger mess---and I don't mean Briles necessarily being involved in any real way, but even being just  part of the "responsibility" dialogue in such a story--I like seeing a potential train wreck we actually avoided since we seem to have been on long spree of collecting train wrecks until recently.

At least six female Baylor students reported alleged sexual assaults involving football players to Baylor within the last seven years, and an ESPN "Outside the Lines" report last week found that several more may exist but are being protected from disclosure due to their "open" status in the Waco police department's records system. The report also quoted female students who said that both Briles and Starr were explictly made aware of these assaults involving football players and opted not to pursue disciplinary action.

I'm here to be obnoxious and stand on my soap box, apologies in advance.

Another story about something horrific being covered up in division 1 ncaa sports. Another story where the focus will be on a few individuals. There will be little, if any, real discussion about the face that we've created a system where university coaches, staff, athletic directors, and even the president of the university is willing to cover up... rape, sexual assault, and even preying on children. In a less serious way, I'll add university-wide cheating scandals, paying of athletes under the table and the family's of athelets. The list goes on.

The money is so good and so important, the ridiculous attachment to college athletics is so strong, that they're able to get their claws into local police departments and prosecutors offices.

Our university system... which, beyond the fact that they love to remind us how high-minded they are and how important they are to our communities and nation, are funded with a lot of tax payer dollars.

I think Baylor was where one basketball player shot another one, but if the whole program melted down, I don't remember.

And the difference between team members shooting each other and a meltdown is . . . ? :)

I actually just read the report.

 

Here is the common thread in all these scandals that are not your run of the bill boosters giving money away scandals.

 

You have university presidents who are typically the best politicians in the academic world. They have the ability to schmooze donors and review budgets, but they are typically - at their heart - academics.

 

Running an academic institution is within their abilities typically.

 

But at these huge schools, we ask them to also run a billion dollar sports program AND a freaking police department.

 

Basically, we are asking the guy who was once head of the Economics Department to be Jerry Jones AND Mayor Daley on top of running a university.

 

For years, I've thought that the athletic departments of the D-1 schools need to be entirely separate corporations that basically operate under a licensing agreement with the school.

 

But it's becoming clear to me that these university police departments either need to be shuttered or taken out of the typical chain of command. The PSU scandal is largely the result of the campus police reporting to a university beauracrat who was friends with everyone involved.

 

This Baylor scandal is largely the result of reported sexual assaults ending up in some kind of Byzantium internal workflow instead of going to trained law enforcement professionals.

I think it may well be even more basic than that. Situations like this (and many others) result in a conflict of interest, where it's to the police department's interest for crimes to simply never get reported.

 

Anecdotal story, from decades ago, but I think it illustrates that this problem can occur in lots of other situations, too. 

 

Probably 25-30 years ago, my parents are driving from Florida to Oklahoma, to visit me.  They stop to spend the night in a hotel in Biloxi, Miss. 

 

They've been in the room for a half hour or so, when there's a knock at the door.  My dad is walking towards the door, to see who it is, when the door is kicked in my two men.  The two men attack my dad, beating him.  One grabs dad's wallet, while the other undoes his belt.  They pull dad's pants down, and run out of the room. 

 

My parents go to the hotel phone, dial 9 (to get an outside line), then 911. 

 

The phone will not let the call go through. 

 

Parents phone the front desk, report a robbery, and ask the front desk to call the police. 

 

Shortly, a police officer arrives at their room.  He explains that yes, there's a team of robbers who've been hitting hotels around the area, using exactly this MO, for some time.  For example, they always pull down the man's pants, to inhibit pursuit.  The problem is bad enough that the hotel has actually hired him to spend his off duty time, here, patrolling the hotel.  But he was on the other side of the hotel when it happened. 

 

After a while, my Dad begins to become suspicious.  The officer isn't writing anything down.  And it's been half an hour, and not one single additional officer has arrived. 

 

My dad starts to make connections. 

 

The phones in the hotel have been programmed not to allow guests to dial 9-911. 

When my parents called the front desk, and told him that they'd been robbed, the desk called the hotel's cop, and did not call the police department. 

The hotel has hired an off duty cop.  And the cop's job, when somebody in the hotel gets robbed, is to show up, show the victims a police badge, and not file a report.  Part of this police officer's job is to keep this crime off of the statistics. 

 

It is to the hotel's advantage for people being assaulted in their hotel rooms to stay off the books.  And while I assume that they have not made any kind of explicit arrangement with the officer, it's obvious that that's what's happening. 

 

 

Well, I can see that kind of "arrangement", that conflict of interest, happening any time where it's to the advantage of (the people who pay the cops) to keep things off the books. 

 

(That's why, when PSU is told that somebody just caught Jerry Sandusky on the shower with a boy, their response was to convene a meeting with the AD, the football coach, and somebody who is above the campus police's chain of commend.) 

 

It is to the great advantage of universities if, say, rapes of college students don't make it into the official statistics.  Or any other crimes, for that matter. 

 

Heck, there doesn't even have to be any explicit conflict of interest. 

 

Fictional example: 

 

The movie, Necessary Roughness, is a story about a fictional Texas college who has been caught in major violations of NCAA rules, and has been handed down very harsh penalties:  They are not permitted to recruit any football players at all.  They're allowed to have a football team, but all of the players must be students who came there for a purpose other than playing football. 

 

The villain of the movie is the school's dean, who wants to get rid of the stupid jocks and their knuckle dragging culture, because they are an insult to the school's academic goals. 

 

There's a scene where several players sneak out of the football dorm, and go to a roadhouse outside of town.  While there, they meet several players from another fictional school, which is supposed to represent the University of Texas.  (Their main football rival.) 

 

There's a big fight at the road house.  Cops get called. 

 

Next scene is of the dean getting a late night phone call.  The dean gets a big grin on his face, gets out of bed, and starts to dress. 

 

Next scene, the dean is pulling into the parking lot of the roadhouse.  There's 20 sheriff cars in the parking lot.  Broken windows.  The dean is in heaven.  This is the excuse he needs to get rid of the football program.  He goes inside. 

 

And everything inside is peaceful.  Everyone is sitting around, drinking iced tea.  There's a card game going on between one of his players, a Texas player, and two deputies.  One player says "Go fish." 

 

The dean is livid.  He storms up to the sheriff, and demands that his players be arrested.  It's obvious that there was a huge fight here, and he orders the sheriff to arrest his players. 

 

Sheriff looks like he's about to slug the dean, but the football coach steps up, and asks for permission to explain things to the dean.  Sheriff looks reluctant, but nods.  Coach takes dean aside. 

 

"Dean, you don't understand things, here.  If the Sheriff arrests our players, then he has to arrest the University of Texas players, too.  Now, the University of Texas, right now, is undefeated, and ranked #1.  And sheriffs who mess things up, when the University of Texas is undefeated, and ranked #1, don't get reelected."

it's like penn state all over again. blaming victims, the media, the public; anyone but the officials that covered up sexual assaults/rape.

 

change the name to any other school and those idiots would be foaming at the mouth for more firings.
