Am I the only one concerned about our secondary?

So in the preseason caveat thread, I posted how concerned I was about the secondary....and last night didn't do much to make me feel better.

DHall looked bad...which is expected since he tore his Achilles twice...which is sad because he's being counted on to be a top contributor

I liked the Culliver signing but he looked really iffy on CLE's first TD. I still feel the best about him tho. He was quite physical last night.

Breeland looked great last year but he's suspended and hurt.

Amerson had a huge sophomore slump. Is he the guy we saw 2013 or 2014?

And the safety position looks even worse to me.

Goldston graded out to be not only one of the worst safeties in the league but also one of the worst starters.

Jeron Johnson is an unknown.

Duke Ihenacho was great in Denver but can't stay healthy. He left the game last night with an injury.

And the rest of the guys are question marks.

So basically, I'm still terrified of our secondary getting torched every week. We saw the same missed tackles and blown assignments last night that we did in 2014.

Thoughts?

(Also I'm tired of talking about QBs lol)

To me, a good defense isn't just the secondary, or just the DL. It is everything working together.

There were too many players missing last night to make a fair assessment. Either because of injury or because it was just the first preseason game and they were simply sat. Or they played very little.

I'll wait until the defense the Redskins plan to start is out on the field together before I decide how they look.

I've always felt our best bet at a productive secondary this year comes from a dominant front-7...so I choose to place my expectations there rather than on a secondary that will do its best and still fail without pressure. Although I do expect stretches of brilliant lock-down play between Culliver and Breeland this year, S will be a big need once again going into next offseason (and CB is always a need for every team, so I won't rule out additions there either no matter how our guys play or how Hall returns).

Not going to freak out yet either positively or negatively.

Too early to tell anything just yet.

Also, two huge members of the secondary coverage were out last night... Ryan Kerrigan and Junior Gallete.

Might well put the first 'observation' thread of the year up after the third game dress rehearsal so we can all chew the crud being as that's the only pre-season exhibition I can ever take remotely seriously.

Hail.

It's a very valid concern.  The potential saving grace is that the front 7 should be much improved and a great pass rush will mask some backend deficiencies.

Keep in mind we haven't seen Galette out there yet.  If he is even half of what he has been, we could have a stellar pass rush.

You can get a 30 pack of Rolling Rock for $17.99 around here if you look hard enough.

If you start drinking when the pregame starts on 980, you won't be worried about the secondary at all.

That's not enough.  You will need this:

This is a really good tip.  Most people do not realize that Irish whiskey is frequently tripled distilled (Jameson is 3x distilled) and the bad stuff that causes hangovers is almost completely filtered out.  Follow it with a shot of pickle juice for hydration and you're good to go after the game.

Still too early to tell, Defense was missing a number of key pieces, and while db's can be isolated at times good pressure from up front should help. Do I think we have a true shut down corner? not as yet, but I'm hoping Culliver, Breeland, or Amerson can step up in that mold. It's still too early, and too small a sample size to say what he have back there, IMO. Gotta stay positive.

I support the acquisitions GMSM has made because the players that have been signed bring a much needed physicality to the secondary. Also, GMSM has a track record of finding secondary gems in the draft. I am waiting patiently to see what we have in Dashon Goldson and Jeron Johnson because both have a lot to prove. Breeland, Culliver, and Hall form a decent CB trio on paper but injuries have me concerned. Time will tell but secondary is not my main concern moving forward...

No one really thinks the secondary is good. It's arguably the biggest concern on the team (QB would be the only one that might rank higher. Not because the position is weaker, but because how important it is). So no, you're not the only one. Everyone thinks the same. It'll probably be better than last year (can't really get worse) and hopefully much better than I think it will be.
