Am I the only one concerned about our secondary?

That's the thing with Hall. He already is hit or miss in terms of mechanics and adding two of the most debilitating injuries an athlete can get... Mannnn I'm nervous

Hell I expected him to be in a battle for a spot before camp and now it looks like that he's already be guaranteed the job

You're nervous?  Even without the injuries the secondary was, again, going to be the weak spot of the defense.

Just going to have to hope some guys step up and play well.  The team as a whole is not going to be good -- I'm just hoping for some small steps forward -- DL and LBs look good so lets hope they can cause some havoc for opposing offenses.

I bet some here would say our secondary was worse in 2012 when we made the playoffs. Madieu Williams leading the charge. Many didn't seem to like Hall... at that salary at least.  Josh Wilson Pugh and Murphy.

Mr Utilty Reed Doughty.... actually kicked ass in that playoff game on special assignment mirroring Wilson after he gashed us early. 13T 2FL 2 Hits and a PD. Haslett finally was using players to their strengths.

BOX Score

Make no mistake, we made the playoffs because Haslett unleashed the front 7 after QBs early in games, and decided enough rookies had embarrassed his passive base D and went after Foles.  Suddenly the DBs did just fine.

if memory serves.... those guys got shredded... but managed to tighten up in crunch times and crunch situations.  THey were porous and gave a lot of ground, and then made some really big plays at key times.

that is a strategy that is really really hard to replicate!

(call it the :     "no... no.. NO... NOOOOOOO.... YESSS! :) "  strategy?  )

I'm still wondering about Jeron Johnson. Everybody was hyped about getting him, but the starting SS spot never really seemed all that close. I mean, it still is good depth, but I think we were all hoping it was a numbers game in Seattle keeping him from shining.

That's the problem with ES.  Too many people on here get hype over every new guy who comes here whether they are good or not.  If he can't beat out Nacho Libro then he obviously isn't that great.

Sorry, I`m late to this party. Quickly.... can someone confirm if it`s been established that the author is, in fact, the only one concerned about our secondary. I`m dying to know.

There are only two things that I am not concerned about involving this franchise and that is Tress Way and Scot McCloughan. So put me in the concerned camp...

I understand the concern, but here's the way I look at...

Knighton- big upgrade

Paea- upgrade

Galette-  big upgrade

Culliver- big upgrade

Goldson/Ihenacho/Johnson- upgrade... if for no other reason than it's almost statistically impossible to be worse.

Moral of the story- all upgrades added.

A lot of people say in McCloughan I trust. If you're one of those people, you need to remember, he drafted Goldson and Johnson. If there's anything this guy knows how to do, it's build a strong D (see 9ers and Hawks).

Assuming the new guys, along with the starters from last year (Kerrigan, Hatcher, Robinson, Hall, Breeland) can stay pretty healthy, this D will be vastly improved. We have turned into a big, physical D, with much better depth.

When it comes to coaching, we will see how that plays out. But, so far I'm a fan of what I see. Barry changed schemes mid-game to adapt to the Browns. Somethin Haz was always too ignorant to do.

I realize that's a glass-half-full opinion, but I'm sure this D will be solid. This team will be good, but the season's success will lay on RG's shoulders... That's a whole 'nother talk.

Initial reports had promise, but in order to fully establish it its being peer reviewed before its inevitable publishing, which may also need a follow up study to confirm.

So, Brave, how'd you feel about the secondary against the Lions?

I thought, outside of a bad lapse from Justin Rogers going against Tate in the first quarter... they were pretty effective. The rest of the completions were heavily contested. Thought it was a decent showing, myself.

It looks to me like the plan, going into the season, is to apply quick pressure on the QBs to force them to release early, while the DBs and LBs keep everyone in front of them. So far, it seems like it's creating a lot of tackling opportunities and they're swarming to the ball pretty well. The hope is if they start really gelling, they could anticipate when the QB is going to throw exactly and get good at jumping routes.

I suspect a lot of nagging early on this season about "playing off" and "cushions", though.

My biggest concern right now is with their tackling, and not the WRs, but the RBs. The way we're one-gapping up front creates opportunities for the RB to get past the traffic real quick and into the second level in a hurry. So they're going to need to be really good at tackling in one on one situations. I fear the really good RBs in the league are going to hurt us considerably, especially early on.

The positive side of it is we're going to get a lot more tackle for losses because of the quick penetration. But, yeah, that's the negative. RBs are going to be facing our DBs often. Culliver has looked great in that department. Ihenacho and Goldson have done well. The rest? Inconsistent to say the least. Amerson continues to flash and then regress. He's still frustrating, just hope all this patience with him bears fruit.

Nice post. I think the swarming mentality should give guys more confidence to jump routes (as you alluded to) - Dunbar was oh so close, and he's the polar opposite of a savvy vet. Getting Breeland back should help, due to his style of play as well as bumping Amerson down the lineup.

Speaking of Dunbar... not really sure what to expect, but I'm super impressed with both his size and the speed he's made the transition (though far, far from being a polished player). Not the kind of guy you'd expect to make the 53, but I'm not too sure he makes it through waivers for the PS. I mean, it seems asinine to think a guy in his position would be plucked and dropped on another team's active roster (that would usually be the man crush talking), but I dunno in this case...

I've tried to temper my expectations for Goldson, but I love that he's:

A seasoned vet (but not over the hill)

A pro bowler previously

Back in a defense that closer resembles the 49ers D he had such success in

Has a solid looking line in front of him

Probably has better corners than we've had in a long time

Probably the best safety we've had since Taylor

Not gonna be all roses, but I think this unit has the potential to be our best in quite some time. (But yes, I have concerns)

Yeah, disappointing show from Amerson and Goldson. At least no bombs were complete on them... but that TD to Steve Smith. Ugly on all fronts.

Don't know what to think about this defense right now. I will say this, the Ravens were bootlegging and calling misdirection plays like crazy. A nod to our front?

Our starting secondary has difficulty tackling. Say all you want about how the new rules have limited opportunity to practice tackling, but I didn't see as much of an issue from our opponents defenses. Unless our trainers wanted cleats with less traction to prevent injuries during the pre-season, we may have a year with lots of TD after the catch.

Lets hope this is a start in the right direction:

Duke Ihenacho has won the Redskins' starting strong safety job.

He beat out Jeron Johnson, who was signed as a free agent after
spending the first four years of his career in Seattle. Ihenacho is a
"box" safety who started 18 games for the 2013 Broncos. He
missed most of last season with a broken heel.

Hall and Breeland are both capable of shutting down a top tier receiver ... and are capable of considerably less.  Hall seems to need to be pissed off at someone or something to do it ... Breeland I'm going to guess needs to be told its all on him and allowed to play to his strengths.  Obvious examples of both playing a considerably lower levels

hoping for the best.

I'm also assuming Culliver is going to be solid

Not sold on Goldson yet ... want to see something special out of him
