Sorry but we had two players that should still be here from the OL that Ron let leave, it was his biggest mistake.

Last years FA OL signings were not ever close to the level we signed this year. Last Year the guys we signed were  3 on a scale of 1-10 and this years are a 5-6

I don’t recall a lot of goofing on the Norwell signing at the time.

Now it feels like a joke but I recall the discussion about it at the time. Felt like a 5-6 signing then too

They had opportunities IMO to shoot higher in FA without even breaking the bank.

I think they were a little hamstrung by the what was going on with the sale of the team. This shouldn't be an issue any more.

That's not the system.  You don't know what cards are coming, but you can predict odds.  And because the dealer has to play by specific rules, you can work them to your advantage.

For examples, because 10's, jacks, queens and kings are all 10, that's 16/52, or roughly 30% of pulling a 10 on every card.  This is the generally accepted "system:" https://www.blackjackapprenticeship.com/blackjack-strategy-charts/

There are also betting strategies.

Trust me, I was TOUGHT the system by the casino manager at the Mandalay Bay back in the late 1990's,  who owned/operated a bunch of casino's. His system is similar to the one above but he suggested always playing the most conservate approach when coming to doubling down, splitting, etc.  Some folks are more aggressive with those tools, I was always super conservative.  For example, there are some that say you always split on double 8's.  Bud said don't do that if you have a "made hand."  So, if the dealer is showing a 6, you assume a bust.  The probability says they have a 16, and will draw a 7+ to bust.

The aggressive play is to split the 8's and try and win 8 hands from a position of strength.

The conservative play is to keep the 16 and play to win the one hand.

Anyway, it's all math.  If you play this way with a good betting strategy you can get yourself into a position to not lose your kid's college savings in one night. :P

Hey @Skinsinparadise, when you’re at camp tomorrow, I’d be very interested to know if they are doing anything to scheme or “protect” the OL, or the drills are really just designed to be 1:1 with a rusher.

If they’re actually trying to help guys and double team, chip with TE’s, whatever, and the OL is getting wrecked, my concern level will start to increase.

If they’re just are letting it be 1:1, with Jon Allen on Charles and he’s getting eaten alive, then that’s kidof to be expected at this point, and in fact if it wasn’t happening, I’d be concerned if it wasn’t happening. Not to say Charles won’t be expected to go 1:1 at times.

Anyway, just curious what they are working on and how.

EDIT: egads.  I’m out of the country and I’m not sure what happened to my internet but it posted that 3 times.

Normally I’d agree but iMHO they could have done better with that budget especially considering from what I understood they purposely held back some funds for a potential opportunistic signing.

Now if the opportunistic signing happens he will get me back. But if not and they rolled the dice again and failed on the O line and that derails the season then IMO it’s a fireabke offense.

The Wylie and Gstes signings weren’t shooting for the fences. Both weren’t even in PFF’s top 100 FAs list. These are mostly regarded nationally as 3rd tier players or low end 2nd tier at best. It’s part of the reason that every outfit that ranked this unit from what I’ve seen rank it as one of the worst in the league.

We goof on Trai Turner and Norwell now but it didn’t feel like a joke then.   In contrast now with hindsight it feels like a dramatically bigger push in FA.  But IMO and plenty others this wasn’t an impressive FA haul. But will see. Maybe these guys are better than their pedigree. Will see.

@Voice_of_Reason will do.

As for Charles I only forgive it because it’s camp but he can’t obviously get whipped that often in the season. It’s not like our division foes don’t have their own beasts in the interior, too.

So for example if Charles gets destroyed by Dexter Lawrence in a game it doesn’t bode well for the outcome of that game

I expect QB play to be drastically improved. And that will make everything (even Ron) look better.

Agreed. I'll bet EB is gonna be pleasantly surprised at what he has in his QB room and the things he can do with them. I think one of Howell's greatest assets is his running ability, it's gonna really improve the overall offensive production.

Brandon more that Trent. But I think If Trent had stayed Scherff would still be here.

Trent would have stayed if Ron didn't play hard ball with him.

the year Trent skipped was the year before Ron showed up.  Rivera was technically the guy who traded him, but is a guy who's been there a few months really supposed to fix that kind of wound?

Still makes me sick that we weren't able to at least get some compensation for him. Silverback still ballin on a HIGH level.

Trent was traded for two mid round picks, that counts as some compensation

They are only in shells right now and not hitting. Can’t really evaluate the O’Line until the pads go on and really until we play against different teams.

The joint practice against the Ravens will be interesting.

Yeah but you can tell a little bit if they’re really just letting guys go at it 1:1, or if there is any scheme protection at all.  Agree, the joint practices with the Ravens will probably be the best predictor of things to come. Though that’s not even 100% because neither team will game plan for the other.

I don’t think Trent was welcomed back.  Dan was pissed he brought the medical stuff into a contract negotiation.  Frankly, it’s one of two things I don’t blame Dan for.  I’d be pissed too.

Trent wanted a new deal.  He probably deserves one.  But he really went about it in a way that made it really difficult for Dan to authorize one.

Watched a few clips from various folks today of 11 on 11s. Looked to me that the o line was getting really manhandled by the d line. Howell got off some nice throws but in real time would have been hit before he threw. As others have said only shells but would like to hear your take on it in person tommorrow.

Maybe the best thing going for our OL and QB is they have minimal expectations. I personally think OL carry a TON of pressure but it shouldn't be hard for them to attain reasonable expectations. The wild card is EB. KCs OL didn't seem all pro but it works and maybe Sam's got a tiny bit of escapability in him to make defenses pay alahomie. I just hope it doesn't take 10 weeks to figure out Ron's preference of drop back passing expecting perfect pass pro is not working before EB is allowed to let Sam use his wheels.

How was the parking situation with the VIP pass and how early did you get there?

Thanks!

It was good but I got there early around 7:30. They said lots open at 7:30 but by 7:30 there's already 3 or 4 rows of cars there and a long line. For VIP just follow the traffic signals and show them your pass on the SeatGeek app.

With the obvious sale taken place the camp is going to be crowded, especially on Saturday when tickets are already sold out.

VIP Gold gets you bleacher seating but no tent. So you sit midfield in the scorching sun. Be prepared if you want to watch practice because the only shade VIP get are in the food and drink tent.

The food itself is passable, plenty of drinks and the breakfast table is filled with pastries and fruit. Coffee too for those interested, and orange and cranberry juice (burgundy and gold)

We drafted guys in the third and fourth round and signed two new starters in free agency.  It's fair to think the guys we got suck, but the OL was addressed.

Ok, I suppose you have a point. Maybe "Improved" would be a better term.

Admittedly, I could be way off base here, but this ^ is probably the biggest area I’ve thought so many of the “details” EB has been harping on come in.  Each player has to sell the fakes, run the motions just so, contact a defender in a certain way at a certain time, come off their guy to get to the second level, etc.  I buy the notion that lack of athleticism on the oline played a part in our terrible screen game, but I tend to think the details (and lack of attention to them) matter more.

Of course, having these kind of plays as part of your bread and butter, vs a play you sprinkle in here and there probably has a big impact.

Agree but from my share of going to training camp for many years, pads or no pads, O line typically held up fine.

It might mean nothing but it could mean something that this O line is struggling some.

Logan Paulsen at least in minicamp thought enough about some of the O line performances good and bad to comment on it and had some red flags for example on Wylie. Haven’t heard though Paulsen’s comments yet on camp itself though

I do agree pads is the better test and the scrimmages against the Ravens by a mile will be the best tell

Yes brutal, and thank goodness we weren't banking on him this season.

While it seemed like a no brainer letting him go, this shows we have already made moves in the right direction
