Nadia Bokody: Surprising truth about how long sex should last

As one woman put it, “If it takes an hour for either of you to get what you came to get, there’s a problem.”

This.  Im not down with any of this just a few minutes nonsense, that’s just cheating yourself, but more than an hour?  Too much.  Though I guess it would be funny to have my Apple Watch start chiming happily in celebration of reaching my hour goal for daily workouts.

Now this isn’t to say there isn’t a time and place to prove your worth.  Im speaking of your 20s.  We’ve all been there.  We reach for those limits, and find that eventually you start to feel like one big bruise.  Not sexy.  At that point it’s time for you and your partner to spend more time on the beach sipping piña colada’s and less time in the room.

I don't think there's any set time limit or anything but I also distinguish between one ongoing act and multiple instances as well as other types of play besides just penetration sex.

I can't imaging having sex for over an hour straight. Like, the entire time. That's not only exhausting in general, but IME that sort of thing can get pretty uncomfortable or even painful for the woman. Pump the brakes, Captain Viagra, you're not filming a porn movie.

At the same time having sex, finishing, and then perhaps going again a little later, or even having other sessions of oral or some other play, I like. I'm not generally a "I'm done, let's watch family guy, eat doritos, and then go to sleep" person.

We got 500 couples to time how long sex lasts - this was the average

If you’re a non-scientist, you might have once asked yourself, propped against the bedhead after disappointingly quick intercourse, how long does sex “normally” last?

A scientist, though, would phrase the same question in an almost comically obscure way: What is the mean intravaginal ejaculation latency time?

I know there’s a lot more to sex than putting the penis into the vagina and ejaculating, but the rest is not always easy to define (kissing? Rubbing? Grinding?). To keep things simple and specific, we’ll just focus on the time to ejaculation.

The best study we have estimating the average time to ejaculation in the general population involved 500 couples from around the world timing themselves having sex over a four-week period – using a stopwatch.

That is as practically awkward as it sounds: participants pressed “start” at penile penetration and “stop” at ejaculation. You may note this could affect the mood somewhat, and might perhaps not exactly reflect the natural flow of things. But – science is rarely perfect, and this is the best we’ve got.

So what did the researchers find? The most striking result is that there was a huge amount of variation. The average time for each couple (that is, averaged across all the times they had sex) ranged from 33 seconds to 44 minutes. That’s an 80-fold difference.

So it’s clear there’s no one “normal” amount of time to have sex. The average (median, technically) across all couples, though, was 5.4 minutes. This means that if you line up the 500 couples from shortest sex to longest sex, the middle couple goes for an average of 5.4 minutes each time they do it.

Americans admit they prefer self-pleasure over sex

Two in three Americans think they're mind-blowing in bed and say they've had their best orgasm solo.

A study of 2,000 sexually active Americans revealed the vital role masturbation plays in respondents' relationships with their bodies and their romantic liaisons with others.

Three in five confessed they've never experienced an orgasm with a partner and have only reached bliss through masturbation.

Forty-four percent even credited masturbation for a life epiphany or "aha moment" akin to a shower revelation.

Most people even prefer it — 60% of those polled would rather masturbate than have sex with a partner.
