New Stadium News?

The only news we’ve had recently was Jason Wright saying they were gonna to be making improvements to FedEx Field.

As far as any new stadium news the last time we got any renderings was a Arrowhead Stadium look alike with a dude surfing in a moat outside of it.

We couldn’t move to DC until our name changed which it has.

Hopefully we get some more news soon.  I’d love to have a stadium built to trap the noise in but also be a unique design vs the open toilet bowl we have currently.

My guess is the new stadium willl be built in the parking lot. Hopefully a better stadium, and somehow get restaurants/bars and shops built on site too. Would be nice to have somewhere to party (or drown our sorrows) with alcohol

I haven't been to FedEx since 2018, but went to a ton of games there over the 20+ years the place has been open and always thought the angst people had about the traffic entering and exiting the place was overblown, even if finding a spot once you're in the lot itself could be more challenging that it needs to be due to all the folks taking up spots with their tailgating stuff. The stadium itself was put up pretty quickly and isn't fancy (and took far too long to put the current video boards up), but once inside is a decent place to watch a game.

That said, I think a decision to build a new place in the same location would be seen as a big fail. I do agree that somehow getting other places to dine pre-game close to the stadium would mitigate the location, but I still think moving back to the city, if possible, is still the most desired outcome.

  • 1 year later...

A snippet from new Gov Youngkin’s initial address to the Va General Assembly:

He voiced support for converting the state’s existing baseball authority into an entity that could oversee the financing and construction of a National Football League stadium — a plan the Washington Football Team has been promoting to legislators, although Youngkin did not mention the team by name.”

I think Virginia has better things to do than use their monies to give Dan a stadium.

Any state or local entity that does thus; should be immediately recalled.

It's gonna happen regardless. I got 20 dollars says the new stadium ends up in Virginia. I've been beating this drum for awhile now. Fedex site is a lost cause and DC isn't going to give Snyder the concessions he will want. The rest of the teams operations are in Virginia.

Didn't they say in the new name video that the team name is going to be used for a huge new sports complex? I'm sure Dans gonna try and out Jerry, Jerry.

Amazon headquarters will be in Crystal City. They snatched up all the available land

Not after Amazon gets done with it, I don’t think so.

Conspiracy thought. Bezos wants to buy into the Comoders. He builds a huge amazon facility and near it is the glorious new command center with its moat and convention center and whatever the hell else they're planning, then they can build low income housing near buy and the warehouse employees can also work at all of those venues and with 2 minimum wage jobs they can walk to, afford that rent. Pack boxes all day and sweep up peanuts and beer vomit at night!

I think Bezos is not done when it comes to buying this team. I don't think he will put it in crystal city but the government is more likely to play ball with him at putting it at old RFK site.

There's nothing available in Crystal City. The vacant lots and warehouse that Amazon bought from JBGSmith for the 4.1m SF of HQ2 were basically the only remaining land left, and I really don't think you could have built a football stadium there had Amazon not come in. Land is insanely expensive in Arlington. The government can barely find space for schools and bus parking ... so there's no chance the stadium will ever be there.

IF Bezos were to buy the team, I think it unlocks a ton of potential for DC at the RFK site, but I don't think anyone other than Dan will own this team over the next 3 decades. If the NFL were going to force him out, they surely would have done so when they had the opportunity to, while the team was in the midst of a massive rebrand that Bezos could have been a part of.

If Bezos wants it I think he will get it. I don't think it's over yet. Snyder still has the Gruden thing hanging over his head.

I think the new stadium is going to go into a plot of land near where the C.I.T building is close to Dulles Airport.  VA will want the stadium further in VA than on the boarder.  It's better for them. There is a lot of development in that area, it's on the metro line, and close to the airport.

I don't love it, but that's where I think it's going to go.

Also, I DO think it's going to be an absolutely stunning, multi-use facility with a whole bunch of things tied into it.  I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if the stadium is connected to a hotel and casino, has at least a retractable roof (thought they might just make it some type of an indoor thing altogether), connected to a whole bunch of retail/food and other housing.

The one thing VA has over MD is there is not a Casino currently in VA.  I think this will be the first.

Dan might be an idiot when it comes to football operations, but I think his hidden skill (because he doesn't need to use it owning a football team) is that he is a "big picture ideas guy."  And I bet he's jealous of JerryWorld, and he want to one-up Jerry.  The way to do that is to build not a stadium, but an entertainment center.  It could even have tie ins to online gaming, and a whole bunch of other things.

I might be the eternal optimist about this, but I think the new stadium, I feel like they are going to get that right.

And I think the casino aspect of this is going to be a huge money-draw, which is why different areas in VA are interested in investing in it.

CIT site would make a ton of sense, but I think that ship has also sailed. The developers of that site have different plans and I doubt they'd be giving any of the land away to Dan Snyder.

There really aren't any good stadium options ... the entire region has been booming and there's no logical "core" sites in Virginia. I think you're looking at somewhere down south of Springfield, or possibly out toward the Haymarket area.

Maybe, just maybe, that will be the impotus to extend metro out that way, but I doubt it.

I haven't followed much about the site near National Harbor, but that wouldn't be metro-accessible.

I think football is going to be a fraction of the focus of the new stadium location for sure.

Washington might have to consolidate its 2026 World Cup venue bid with Baltimore because of concerns about the viability of playing at FedEx Field, a major blow to the city’s efforts of hosting soccer’s marquee event, people familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

As part of a joint regional effort, Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium would become the area’s game venue and the District would stage nongame events, such as large-scale watch parties on the National Mall, said two people, who requested anonymity in order to speak openly about the situation.

Last fall, Washington received high marks for its presentation to FIFA, the sport’s global governing body, but FedEx Field, a Landover venue plagued with problems for years, did not, those people said.

The move would be a boon to Baltimore, which, without Washington’s prestige as the nation’s capital, faces long odds of becoming a venue.

It would also be a black eye to the D.C. area, one of America’s most vibrant soccer markets and a venue for the 1994 World Cup (at RFK Stadium) and 1999 and 2003 Women’s World Cups (at FedEx Field and RFK, respectively).

FIFA is planning to name host cities in the next few months. Aside from 10 or 11 U.S. venues, a handful of locations in Mexico and Canada will make the cut for the first World Cup hosted by three countries.

“As the selection process remains ongoing and is expected to be finalized by Q1/Q2 of this year, FIFA is not in a position to comment on individual candidate host cities,” a FIFA spokesman said in a statement to The Washington Post.

Terry Hasseltine, executive director of the Maryland Sports Commission, which is leading Baltimore’s campaign, said the suggestion of a Baltimore-Washington bid “has been put out there [by fans], but it’s something we are leaving to the international and national governing body to determine what is the best case for the United States.”

A FIFA delegation toured Washington in September, and while the overall presentation was well-received, the stadium drew concern, people close to the matter said. Issues included infrastructure and amenities.

Seating capacity has also shrunk, affecting potential ticket revenue for FIFA. Once the NFL’s largest at more than 91,000, the Washington Football Team, which owns FedEx Field, has removed seats as ticket demand declined the past decade. Other areas are fenced off or covered with tarps, leaving capacity for NFL games at 67,617.

The day after touring Washington, the FIFA group visited Baltimore and attended a Ravens game at the 71,000-seat stadium, which is walking distance from the city’s business district and Inner Harbor.

The Washington Football Team has been exploring locations to build a new stadium, but it is contractually obligated to play in Landover until after the 2027 season. That means the outlook for a new facility before the World Cup is remote, at best.

RFK Stadium, which opened in 1961, has been decommissioned and is slated for demolition in the near future. Audi Field, D.C. United’s newly constructed home near Nationals Park, can hold 20,000 fans and therefore does not have the seating capacity needed for World Cup matches.

FedEx Field is not the only World Cup candidate under scrutiny. Most of the U.S. stadiums were built with the NFL in mind and, by FIFA’s standards, are too narrow for the organization’s marquee event. They would require alterations in the corners, where angled walls encroach on the proposed field.
