Exclusive: Navy probe to decide future of fired U.S. carrier commander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Even as he is hailed as a hero by his crew, the fired commander of a coronavirus-stricken U.S. aircraft carrier is being reassigned while investigators consider whether he should face disciplinary action, acting U.S. Navy Secretary Thomas Modly told Reuters on Friday.

Captain Brett Crozier was relieved of his command of the Theodore Roosevelt on Thursday after a scathing letter in which he called on the Navy for stronger action to halt the spread of the virus aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was leaked to the media.

Modly said in an interview that the letter was shared too widely and leaked before even he could see it.

But the backlash to Modly’s decision to fire Crozier has been intense. In videos posted online, sailors on the Theodore Roosevelt applauded Crozier and hailed him as a hero, out to defend his crew - even at great personal cost to his career.

“And that’s how you send out one of the greatest captains you ever had,” exclaimed one sailor in a video post, amid thunderous applause and cheering for Crozier as he left the carrier and its 5,000 crew members in Guam.

Modly did not suggest that Crozier’s career was over, saying he thought everyone deserved a chance at “redemption.”

“He’ll get reassigned, he’s not thrown out of the Navy,” Modly said.

Australian state will install home surveillance hardware to make sure if you're in virus isolation, you stay there

The State of Western Australia has given itself the power to install surveillance devices in homes, or compel people to wear them, to ensure that those required to isolate during the coronavirus crisis don’t interact with the community.

Not all people will be required to use the devices. State Premier [equivalent to a US governor – ed.] Mark McGowan said they’ll only be used if: “Someone who is directed to self-isolate and fails to comply.”

The law enabling the regime, passed yesterday after very brief debate, is the Emergency Management Amendment (COVID-19 Response) Bill 2020 [PDF]. It outlines the monitoring regime, and the fact that the State Emergency Coordinator has the power to require use of surveillance hardware.

If the Coordinator makes that decision, they have the power to:

- Direct the person to wear an approved electronic monitoring device.
- Direct the person to permit the installation of an approved electronic monitoring device at the place where the person resides or, if the person does not have a place of residence, at any other place specified by the officer.
- Give any other reasonable direction to the person necessary for the proper administration the electronic monitoring of the person.

Attempts to damage, remove or interfere with the operation of the devices, or refusal to hand one over to authorised officers, can result in a year behind bars, or a fine of AU$12,000 (US$7,400, £5,900).

The Register has learned of smartphone-based surveillance in aid of coronavirus-crimping in Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong, plus the UK is clearing policy roadblocks to make it possible. Russia has used facial recognition and public security cameras to detect quarantine-breakers.

Thread on what we found: The White House got its first formal notification about coronavirus on Jan 3. Within days, US spy agencies were signaling the seriousness of the threat by including the first of many warnings in the President’s Daily Brief

Ossama determined to attack within the US.

With the death rate in the US doubling every 3 days, do you guys really think that we are going to see about 48k deaths by Easter?  Nearly 200k deaths the following weekend?

I mean those numbers seem unreal but that is the trajectory we are on.

Just rode around town for the first time in two weeks. Walmart packed. Grocery store packed. Lowe’s packed. Lots of traffic. Things don’t seem one bit different.

I won’t be surprised if we lose 500k+ lives once it all settles. We are so ****ing dumb and arrogant. I give up.

Where are you located?

I went to Safeway last night and it was noticeably less crowded.  I had to go again this morning to get the rest of the stuff since I was shopping for 2 families last night and ran out of room.  Again, it was not crowded at all.

Then I ran to Microcenter because I wanted to get a printer so I can print worksheets out for my 5 year old son to do some worksheets and activity since he's not finishing his last year of preschool.  They have the entrance blocked off with someone out there asking you why you are there, and I told him to pick up an order.  He then said ok but we have to spray both the tops and bottoms of your hands so he did and when I went in, I basically had to get just what I said I was getting.  I also needed some batteries I did not order online so I was escorted to the battery section then to the line to pickup my order.  When I left there were 2 people waiting to go in since it's 1 out, 1 in.

Then I swung by the liquor store since I was all out.  As i got there, I noticed a line of about 10-12 people wrapped around the store, with red lines on the ground.  So I got in line and in about 5 minutes I was at the front where they had security letting 1 person in as 1 person left.  They let about 6 people in the store at once total.  They have plastic windows blocking the cashiers in there too.

This was in Rockville, MD, and everything seems different as all hell right now.  Nothing about this feels normal in the least.  And I'd say that between 50% - 75% of people are now wearing masks or scarfs over their mouths and noses.  I am now rocking an N95 mask whenever I am out.  I put it on my car before I get out and take it off when I get back in.  Yesterday was the first day I did that and felt super awkward initially, but it quickly felt "ok" as I saw others doing it too.  The only thing about it that sucks is how hot it gets and it's tougher to breathe in them.
