In case you didn't have enough to worry about, here's something else to consider...

Because the Trumpsters think it's a hoax they're going out and will be among the largest initial groups infected.

They'll also be the first treated, which means they may have the best chances of recovering before the medical facilities get overwhelmed and run out of supplies and/or vaccine.

*exit stage left* 💣

Nah. If theres a bulge, it means they'll be the first ones caught up in it.  In Italy, they are moving people to the side they dont think they can save to focus resources on who they think they can, that will go on at least until the bulge is over.

On my fairly exclusive guitar forum, there’s a member that’s an accomplished virologist living in Switzerland.  I can’t really vouch for him in any way, except to say that he is a very cool dude, an excellent guitarist and he owns TWO Ferraris.

Anyway, he posted this about an hour ago.

On the US diagnostic front, my company today got FDA approval for a non-quantitative PCR SARS-2 test. This test is different than our prior test in that it can be run on the standard diagnostic equipment available in every large hospital lab in the world, rather than relying on specialised equipment in public health department labs.

The test is also ten times faster than the current test and can be set up and run anywhere the machine that runs it exists. The company has delivered many new testing machines to the US and can deliver more as needed. The key is that 110 of these machines already exist in large hospital labs across the country, so tests could start very quickly.

Production is set to have 800,000 tests by early next week, with 800,000 more made per week until they are no longer needed. Throughput for a single machine in a hospital is 4100 tests a day. This can be done in any hospital with the existing tools on hand by hospital lab staff with no additional training. This would be about 400,000 new tests per day available if they run non-stop. The CDC has conducted 3,903 tests and public health at the state level has done 9,721 in total, so the scale of 400,000 new tests a day is massive.

I've seen a box of these rolling off the assembly line so these are real tests, not the CDC promised tests mentioned by Mike Pence that have not yet materialised, or the state health department tests that are rarely being used.

Can be shipped anywhere that recognises a CE label designation, which includes all of Europe. The machine that runs the tests also exists widely in European hospitals.

School systems all over GA shutting down. I  have a coworker who goes to Ga State & has been studying in France on an exchange program. She got a call saying she had 48 hours to decide whether to stay or come home (per the travel ban). If she comes home, there's a  good chance she could lose credit for the entire semester. 🙁

Macron has announced school closings throughout France, although I don't recall whether that is only for k-12 ages.

Add Alex Jones to the list of scumbag hucksters peddling "cures" for Corona virus:

Alex Jones Is Peddling Toothpaste That He Falsely Says Kills Coronavirus

Conspiracy theorist and talk radio host Alex Jones is using public fears over the coronavirus outbreak to help peddle toothpaste that he falsely claims can kill the virus. Jones told listeners on his “Infowars” program Tuesday that silver-infused toothpaste being sold on his website has been verified by federal officials as a coronavirus killer, despite the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention saying otherwise.

“The patented nanosilver we have, the Pentagon has come out and documented and Homeland Security has said this stuff kills the whole SARS-corona family at point-blank range,” he said. “They’re still discounted despite all the hell breaking loose.”

NY attorney general orders InfoWars’ Alex Jones to stop selling coronavirus ‘treatment’ products

New York Attorney General Letitia James said Thursday that her office has ordered InfoWars’ Alex Jones to immediately stop selling and marketing products as a “cure” or “treatment” for the coronavirus COVID-19.

Jones has been selling toothpaste, dietary supplements, creams and several other products through his website that claim to treat or prevent and cure the coronavirus, according to a news release from James’ office. One of the products, a Superblue Toothpaste, claimed to kill “the whole SARS-corona family at point-blank range” and had approval from the U.S. government, according to the release.

There are currently no vaccines or approved drugs to treat or prevent the coronavirus, which has infected at least 1,300 people in the United States, killing at least 38, according to Johns Hopkins University.

“As the coronavirus continues to pose serious risks to public health, Alex Jones has spewed outright lies and has profited off of New Yorkers’ anxieties,” James said. “Mr. Jones’ public platform has not only given him a microphone to shout inflammatory rhetoric, but his latest mistruths are incredibly dangerous and pose a serious threat to the public health of New Yorkers and individuals across the nation.”

Jones did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Didn't you know that Ferraris do not run on gas or need oil?

They are fueled by the tears of orphans and the sweat of poor people.

I have a hard time with the political attacks in this thread --- there should be no delight over the danger imposed by administrative incompetence or the risk to older Americans.  Fortunately it hasn't taken Federal intervention for common sense measures to be taken place by common sense entities (closing Disney!  Cancelling March Madness!).

A calm nationwide pause, which included support for workers and companies shoud have been spearheaded at the Fed level earlier.

Roche is a reliable company so this is good news.

The vaccine news from Defense One is promising as well. There’s a decent chance to vaccinate against this eventually because the rate of mutation doesn’t seem high. A virus like HIV is almost impossible to vaccinate against because it mutates at an extraordinarily high rate as soon as it infects someone. That’s not the case here it seems according to preliminary data.

Honestly, I see some of what you are talking about, and agree, but pointing out that some folks are in the process of killing themselves to prove they are right is not a political attack, it's an obsevation.

Although a good, clear, policy sure would help.

I figure it's a safe bet that we're going to need massive closings.  Like "all businesses not on this list".

But it sure would be nice to know if the grocery store is gonna stay open.

Pretty sure I'm gonna keep working.  (Home health care for a patient who needs 24-7 care.)  My roommate (respiratory therapist in a major hospital) may well be not allowed to leave the hospital.  (They just announced that they're suspending their overtime rules, so employees can work more hours if they want.)  But will I be able to buy TV dinners?   Will I be able to buy gas?  (Work is 25 miles away.)

Will UPS (and similar) still be working?  That's how my patient gets all his medical supplies.

I saw that Italy announced that they're suspending all mortgage payments, nationwide, for six months.  Obviously that won't help renters, but it might be a good idea.

Yikes, thanks for reminding me, if this gets bad enough, amazon might not deliver so I can avoid the stores once we start running low on food. This is probably why they are a oiding closing grocery stores in some countries.  Damn.

Mom gets her meds in the mail going to check on how many months she has, but even then, some she has to see the doctor again before she can get a refill : /

The 2nd and 3rd order effects an economic shutdown will have are going to be huge... how many companies can pay employees to stay home?  Small businesses?  Most Americans were already on the edge.   What about flight attendants and those in the travel hospitality business?

Perhaps some may say the stock market, "priced this in"... who can afford 2 months pay disruption?
