Welcome to the Redskins Chase Young DE Ohio State

Feels like forever since Ioannidis has suited up.  Anxious to see how this front looks with everyone healthy and after a year of play under Chase's belt.  Hear a lot about how good this defense is and they were but they need to take another step and dominate games.

A little tid bit from PFF on ranking last years’ edge rushers.

8. CHASE YOUNG, WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM

The scary part when analyzing Young’s first season in the NFL is that there is still clear room for improvement from a pass-rushing perspective. And Young still got out to an 87.1 overall grade as a rookie, fifth in the NFL among qualifying edge defenders.

He was at his best in the red zone. Young’s 93.3 overall grade last season in that portion of the field led all players at the position.

I know it's voluntary and I know chase young is working his ass off and I have no fears he'll be out of shape and not ready for the season but I'd be lying if I said I didn't think it was a bad look for him not to be at ota's.

When 86 out of 90 players show up the absence of the other 4 is much more glaring if there's no good excuse.

Couple that with the fact that he's still trying to build a reputation as a team leader coming off a fantastic rookie campaign and it just doesn't look good that he couldn't take a few days out of his off-season work even if just for bonding and team chemistry.

I agree, and this topic draws a fair amount of attention every year on this board. Some insist that "voluntary" means just that, while others argue that you shouldn't overlook the "team" part of Voluntary Team activities.  I hope he had a better reason than he was busy working out on his own. With great power comes great responsibilities

Players as special as him can do what they want.  That's how it is.

This ia obviously true, but he's supposed to be the leader/team captain. And he's just entering his second year. I wish he and Montez showed up.

It doesn't bother me or lessen his leadership potential.  The star players skip these things frequently.  They still lead their teams because they are so good the other guys defer to them naturally.

Fans don't like hearing it, but NFL stars get and earn special treatment.  It may only be his second year, but Chase has already established himself as that caliber of essential player.  And the team ran off any semi-credible camp competition for snaps he and Montez would have had this summer, so they can't complain about it.

Star Coaches get the same treatment? Or should RR show up anyway?

You know the coach has to be there. That's not a fair comparison though I understand your point, its not optional for coaches.

Realistically, he probably doesn't feel he gets much out of the first one anyway. Think about any orientation....its not super useful for people that already know what's happening. And that's ok and expected to some degree.

The dude is in the middle of his offseason training and doesn't want to mess up his routine, which can lead to regression or injury.  He clearly had a plan laid out for how he wanted to attack this offseason.  I can almost guarantee the team will be better off in the long run by letting him do his own thing/training during this portion of the offseason.

This debate seems to happen every year. Trent did the same stuff.  The date for OTAs was not some closely guarded secret. Being "in the middle" of his personal program is a simple arrangement of dates and kind of a weak argument. Hell, even if he kept his ongoing regimen and just attended camp to welcome his new TEAMmates would be much more well received IMO. I can't speak for RR or Chases teammates, but leaders do what leaders do. If your obligation to your personal training gets in the way of an "implied" obligation to the team, it becomes a matter of priority.

No need to get the pitchforks and lanterns out quite yet, everyone here LOVES Chase, myself included. But I would be dishonest if I didn't admit to being slightly surprised and maybe even disappointed by this. It seems so out of character for what I imagined his stance to be like.

This is exactly how I feel. I understand that McQueen is also correct that stars get to do this. It’s just not what I expected out of Chase.

He’s absolutely going to show up in shape with an improved body, and ready to go. That’s not the part that gives me pause.

Nobody on the team gives a crap, trust me.

If anything some of the guys probably appreciate Young and Sweat not being there since the guys behind them are very young 7th round/UDFA types and now they'll get a chance to show their stuff.

Lawrence Taylor used to show up to OTA’s high as Benny Frank’s kite.  We be aight.

Cocaine improves one’s ability to rush the passer. Well documented fact. Let’s all pray to God that Chase and Sweat are off somewhere snorting some massive rails as we speak.

I view it as a collectively bargained privilege of being a great and indispensable player.  I'm not going to get upset at Chase and Montez for using their privileges.

If we're going to be the kind of team that has bonafide great players again, our fan base is going to have to grow up and get used to the different levels of treatment they receive from the regular players.  Nobody loves it, but great players get special treatment and you have to handle them as long as they produce.  If Bill Walsh can put up with Fred Dean skipping lift sessions and lounging in the locker room smoking cigarettes during half time, then anyone can acommodate the individualistic behavior of a star player.  It's a big part of a coach's job.
