China crash is ‘unprecedented’ given Boeing 737′s stellar safety record, says aviation analyst

For an aircraft like China Eastern’s Boeing 737-800 to crash in midflight is “simply unprecedented,” said one aviation analyst who cited the plane’s excellent safety record.

“Air travel is the safest form of transport. But when we do suffer incidents or accidents, we don’t see anything like what we have seen in China over the last 24 hours,” Alex Macheras, an independent aviation analyst, told CNBC’s “Capital Connection” on Tuesday.

“This nosedive was simply unprecedented, especially from cruising altitude. We’re talking about the safest phase of the flight. That’s why those answers are going to be needed as soon as possible to determine,” he added.

No bodies or survivors have yet been found from the crash as of Tuesday morning, Chinese state media said.

The domestic flight was carrying 132 people when it nose-dived Monday afternoon in the southern region of Guangxi.

The plane was cruising at 29,100 feet and began a sharp descent after 2:20 p.m., recovering more than 1,000 feet briefly — then continuing to dive again before it lost contact. It fell more than 25,000 feet in about two minutes.

BOEING THREATENS TO CANCEL BOEING 737 MAX 10 AIRCRAFT UNLESS GIVEN EXEMPTION FROM SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

Aircraft manufacturer Boeing has suggested it could pull the latest model of its 737 MAX, currently in the process of getting its certification, unless it is made exempt from certain safety regulations which come into force in 2023.

More than 600 of the 737 MAX 10, the highest capacity version of this aircraft type, have been ordered by airlines.

This is bull****. Spectrum/Charter just lost a trial and has to pay $1B in a case where their employee murdered an old lady due to not conducting proper background check. One employee murdering one person.

Yet all I can find for Boeing over this is settlements and other cases of lawsuits where maybe Boeing total fine liability will reach $2B.... for systemic failures that resulted in the deaths of 346 people.

Boeing is made up of human being employees who designed and implemented a negligent systen that resultes in the death of 346 people.  One test pilot was charged,  but acquited because they couldn't prove what/how he knew when.  Executives weren't charged either.

Working on a large, spread out program shouldn't mean no one is accountable when you fail and kill people.

I am comparing this to the Honda/Takata air bag case... and at least in that case 3 employees were charged.  Oddly enough, it doesn't appear they were ever extradited to the US.  Those faulty air bags only killed 16 people.  Seems like the media has lost interest in that case.

Yeah companies usually pay fines for this stuff.

and fraud stuff where the injured party is only injured monetarily.

Ive always thought that if you start throwing execs in jail for running a place that allows this to happen, they’d care more about making sure it doesn’t happen. 5, 10 years in prison is a bigger cost to them than 200 million.

but it’ll never happen.

Boeing Says There Was No Pain or Suffering in 737 Max Crash Because Everyone Died Instantly

The Wall Street Journal brings us the report of Boeing’s baffling mental gymnastics in attempting to avoid culpability in the two 737 Max crashes that killed a total of 346 people. As WSJ reports, in a recent court filing Boeing attorneys “cited an expert who said that the 737 MAX victims died painlessly because the airplane crashed into the ground so fast that their brains didn’t have time to process pain signals from their nervous systems.”

Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 MAX 9 for checks after blowout

Alaska Airlines (ALK.N) has grounded dozens of Boeing 737 MAX 9 (BA.N) jets for safety checks after a cabin panel blowout forced a brand-new airplane loaded with passengers to make an emergency landing.

The piece of fuselage tore off the left side of the jet shortly as it climbed out of Portland, Oregon, en route for Ontario in California on Friday, forcing pilots to turn back and land safely with 171 passengers and six crew on board.

Missing part of Alaska Airlines plane that blew off mid-flight is found in Portland man’s backyard, investigators say

The missing part of the Alaska Airlines aircraft that blew off mid-flight has been found in a backyard in Portland, the National Transportation Safety Board announced.

A Portland school teacher named Bob reached out to the agency after he found the missing Boeing 737 MAX 9 fuselage door plug in his yard, NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said at a news conference.

Federal investigators had been searching for the door plug since it blew off an Alaska Airlines aircraft after taking off from Portland on Friday, leading to the nationwide grounding of certain Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft and a slew of flight cancellations.

Midair blowout can 'never happen again,' Boeing CEO says after Alaska Airlines accident

An accident like the midair Alaska Airlines panel blowout “can never happen again,” Boeing’s president and CEO said Tuesday, as he acknowledged a “mistake” had been made before the plane was forced to make an emergency landing.

Dave Calhoun said the company was working to assure airline customers that its planes are safe and assist the National Transportation Safety Board in figuring out the cause of the mishap, which snapped off a panel of the fuselage of an almost full 737 MAX 9 on Friday, leaving a large hole.

“We’re going to approach this, No. 1, acknowledging our mistake. We’re going to approach it with 100% and complete transparency every step of the way,” he told a town hall staff meeting at the factory that makes 737 planes in Renton, Washington. Boeing was going to work with the NTSB “to find out what the root cause is,” he said.

Calhoun added that the company will “get to a conclusion” on the cause of the accident and work with investigators and the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure it “can never happen again.”

“I got kids, I got grandkids and so do you. This stuff matters. Everything matters, every detail. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, this isn’t a lecture, not by any stretch. It’s nothing more than a reminder of the seriousness with which we have to approach our work,” he said.

BTW, I haven't read. I certainly hope the person in that seat paid attention to the boring speech, and was wearing his seat belt?

I thought I read that no one was in that seat. Someone nearby did have their shirt ripped off.
