Who should be the next head coach for the Skins

If we don’t fire Bruce it won’t matter. He is clearly making the majority of the decisions — and he is 100 percent Snyder’s guy. It’s cute that people think Snyder has changed and lets the football people make all the decisions. If that was the case, Bruce would be long gone. You only keep someone with no other prospects and a poor track record around for one reason: he’s your lackey.

I would also add T.J. McCreight's name to the list of GM candidates.

[Will McClay -

Lionel Vital -

Scott Fitterer -

Dan Colbert -

Phil Kreidler -

Reggie McKenzie -

Martin Mayhew -

Eliot Wolf -]

McCreight is currently with the Eagles as an senior exec of player personnel.

And I had to go back to 2014, the last time we did this dance before hiring McC, to read over my list from then.

Still would have to kick the tires on Dru Grigson over in Arizona, director of college scouting. Which he's held that position for the last 6 years.

Gibbs retire and Greg Williams take over but Dan Snyder got so pissed that gibbs wouldn't stay that he fired everybody.

No, what happened was that Snyder watched the playoffs with Williams, and they didn't "click", so he didn't hire him.

Snyder wants a head coach who is a good buddy to watch the playoffs with. Not a head coach who is too busy preparing for playoffs to have time to be the owner's friend.

Who are the hot coordinators right now? How about Josh McDaniels and we sell out to actually grab a decent QB.

Josh McDaniels isn't leaving New England. After the Colts debacle, it's clear either he has a sweet job offer from them down the road, or they have ugly, ugly dirt on him.

Bruce will sign the guy then release him once he'll have handed us the Eagles playbook!

Kevin O'Connell is a guy on the rise through the NFL.

Fitterer:

January 2017 - Fitterer interviewed with both the 49ers and the Colts for their general manager positions in January.

June 2017 - The Chiefs have requested to interview seahawks co-director of player personnel Scott Fitterer, source said, for their GM job.

Via John Clayton:

Fitterer shares the title of Seattle’s co-director of player personnel with Trent Kirchner. Fitterer has worked for the Seahawks since 2001, when he joined the team as an area scout.

Fitterer’s background has been more in college scouting. His input helps Seahawks GM John Schneider determine the team’s ratings of college draft prospects. That has helped Schneider have enough of a feel for the draft board to make several trades down, which has allowed the Seahawks to average more than 10 draft choices a year.

All you have to do is a cursory look around the league to see the influence of college scheme on the NFL. Especially so in 2018.

I keep repeating myself because it's so widespread and profound, and so few people ever mention it. It is just TOO obvious.

Take Nagy for example.

So it makes guys like Kliff Kingsbury look extremely "hot" right now as an air raid specialist.

Especially since both Mahomes, who played for Kingsbury, is resetting records in KC where Nagy came from, and who (Nagy) is using the spread / air raid for Trubisky (sp) in Chicago, leading them to 1st place in the division, which is why the air raid is so en vogue.

And a Mahomes endorsement of Kingsbury: https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/patrick-mahomes-endorses-kliff-kingsbury-says-ex-coachs-innovativeness-would-translate-to-nfl/

There can only be one coach. Dan Snyder.

I don't think this can be overstated enough.

Not in a literal sense of course but in terms of the undethroned, immovable, entity.

Everyone knows, that on the big things, owners are always involved. Whenever there is a change at the most important position on the field, the QB, whenever the face of the franchise is being changed, the owner is always going to be involved. The hiring of a HC, or GM, there too, etc.

And Snyder is no exception.

And as reports indicate, on big cultural level signings, like the R. Foster thing, Snyder is just as involved. He's not only a voice that signs off on the acquisition, not just a supervising, managing, orchestra conductor, but right up on stage washboarding a fiddle and stomping his feet with the rest of the band.

He's right up in there.

I mean you would expect an owner to at least be informed of such a signing for a player with that level of media attention and scrutiny. That's not the point. It's more about Dan has never really bucked the notion that he IS a capable decision maker on who is talented, who is worthy of signing, on which major moves are valid and which are not.

Snyder thinks he can be this slipstream GM. Have others compile copious amounts of data, provide the finished product, the board, and Dan can just show up, hear the arguments and pick the course he thinks is right. But his ass wasn't the one grinding out the info or beating down the tape.

And I think from the simplest macro observation over the entire tenure of Dan, to date, you don't have to look high and low, or far and wide, to find numerous occurrences where the organization made a false step, stepped in gum, stepped in ****, or downright did something that was straight up embarrassing.

People have long debated Snyder's involvement or non involvement. And if you ask me my opinion on the matter, I'd say there was a time in which Dan was watching film with Vinny, watching games on TV and basically pointing and cross referencing individual players with Vinny and quite literally believed that he knew how to evaluate, how to pick out winners, and shaped the acquisition of player personnel on a large scale.

I vaguely remember rumblings from the Vinny era that he and Dan used to watch tape together, prospect tape. Maybe that is just projecting on my part from those days in which Dan and Vinny sat next to each other in the owner's box, at all the games, and both acted like mid-20 year old fans, standing up and shouting, gesticulating at referees (and I can only assume at players and coaches too).

Mike Nolan anyone? Ice cream fetish.

We do know that Dan at least watched playoff game(s)? with GGGregggggggg Williams and used that experience as the basis for the hiring of the Head Coach after Gibbs. Ie: Gregggggggg wasn't hired because he and Dan didn't "hit it off."

So it's easy to infer, or even guess, that Dan used "watching" games, either live, or on TV, or on tape, as an evaluation tool for large scale decision making. It's not hard to assume that that template of operational decision making didn't at one time or another spill over into the player personnel side of things.

I think it would (and did).

Maybe that's changed in time and no longer includes knowing the top 100 players on the board, or being side by side with Vinny trying to make trades and free agent acquisitions, maybe it's just relegated to the handful of major position moves, major cultural level signings that others bring to him nowadays. IDK.

But we rightly earned the embarrassing title of free agent / (trade) whores thanks in part to Dan, via Vinny, in those 2000s. And in retrospect, it's even more embarrassing now, all of those moves, whether that be Deion or Hayesworth, or whoever the ****, than it was then. We had tons of bungles at the greatest of magnitude order which superseded all the other organizations, who of course have their own moments too, just not at the scale of the Vinny and Dan 2000's.

I would point to no other vignette that would illustrate my point more than the early to mid 2000s Snyder era which tried to go full Miami Hurricanes roster. I'm sure if Snyder could have attained the entire 2000/2001/2002 Miami team, he would have.

Interesting parallels to today's Alabama boys roster. Not that I think it's (current Bama roster) manifested under the same Snyder initiative and design as the previous (2000s miami), I actually don't think that at all. Just an interesting parallel.

But more specifically, it was Snyder's "buddy-lust" for guys like Portis (especially) and for Moss, in how Dan wanted to be friends, buddies, have pajama parties or whatever the hell it was. I have no idea if Dan kept a bottle of Crown over at Portis' stripper pole living room house for whenever he came over for madden, pizza and twerk parties.

But those washington-miami teams almost feel like, in retrospect, as if someone with little to no tangible football acumen, no Xs and Os chops, you know, a standard ES'er, was just watching the college football landscape like many millions of casual fans do and simply remarking: "hey Miami is good." Just like people today who don't know squat about football (or at least an intuitive sense of evaluation) can easily say: "hey Alabama is good."

So there's your qualifications for being an NFL owner and NFL GM, just watch TV. Just watch ESPN and see which teams do well, then go get them. But of course, it's a lot more nuanced than that. Especially if you want to do it right, for the longterm.

You would just hope that the owner's voice was simply the accompanying chorus supporting the decision maker, after the decision maker (the totally qualified GM who would have final say on all matters player personnel) has made a determination.

And the owner would simply review all information, turn to their trusted guide and say: "are you confident with your choice? have you explored all options? Well, it runs against my first inclination, but that's why I hired you, you make the decision, but you own it."

Every GM in the world would love that. They each could live with that, knowing that they'd own something which was their own ultimate and final choice.

But if a GM had to own someone else's choice, someone else's edict ... not so much. Not at all in fact. You can see that playing out now in Oakland with McKenzie. You know damn well that McKenzie is not trading Cooper or Mack because it was his choice. Evaluators are nothing if they are not totally loyal to the draft picks they have made. Those picks are a reflection of their intellectual acumen as football evaluators.

Many GMs have used the phrase "favorite son" in reference to their most prized draft selections. And even when those players fail, the GMs who drafted them will still defend the selection, because they are defensing themselves too in the process.

I feel the same way with my draft picks.

But, basically, I think you are tapping into something that is fundamentally true, core, which is, Dan thinks he is a worthy final decision man. Dan uses his ownership like he's the actual GM, on the big matters, the big topics.

And what's scary is that I can't say that I wouldn't want to be the GM, myself, if I were the owner. Truthfully, I think it's just human nature when you get to such an echelon of power.

Sure, he's got to have a bunch of other guys hired in the front office to deal with the minutiae, build the boards, suss out the little nuggets, but ultimately he reserves the right, at any time, to jump in and be the impromptu GM, in every real sense.

And to be honest, an absentee owner would actually be a helluva lot more easier.

When it comes to major moves in the Allen Era, the first thing that comes to mind is the extremely expensive failures with the QB position.

But when it comes to lower level moves, where Snyder presumably isn't involved, we've been at least average, with some great lower round draft picks.

Really makes you think.

From different articles and reports

A. He was the guy that pushed the acquisition of Jeff George and also him being the guy over Brad Johnson

B. I recall one guy on the radio saying but haven't found a source in writing that he pounded the table to draft Patrick Ramsey

C. Article which I've posted before about how he had a man crush on Brady Quinn and the team's scouts had to talk him out of it.

D. Supposedly was charmed with Mark Sanchez but got out bid by the Jets

E.  Wanted Jay Cutler but was outbid by the Bears

F.  Jason Campbell -- that seemed to be all Gibbs.  But Dan bought the narrative that Zorn could fix him

G. He pushed for the McNabb trade

H.  Fell in love with RG3 -- traded for him

I.  Put RG3 before other players and ultimately the coach

J. Hired a head coach in part to fix RG3

K. Had to be convinced by Scot and Jay that RG3 shouldn't be the starter

L.  Botched the next guy's contract IMO in spectacular fashion

M. Traded for a 34 year old QB -- 3rd try at a mid 30s QB to be the answer

N.  Looks pretty good that its going to be shown to be another poorly conceived move

O. Likely was convinced by his stooge GM that you can't win paying 28 million in the league for one QB and now looks like they are going to have to do it anyway.

What next?  Clearly the dude is obsessed with the QB position and I'd trust my 10 year old son who plays flag football's instincts on the position better than Dan's.   But I'd presume, Dan's neurosis on the QB position is probably on epic levels even for him.  So good chance I'd say if he moves on to another coach -- somehow QB will be part of that narrative.  The QB narrative was front and center for his last two head coaching hires.

I've long thought that Snyder made the decision to stick with Campbell in 2008.  Perhaps Gregg wanted to go with Collins, and that's part of why he didn't get the head coaching job.

Whomever the next coach is, I don't envy him.

It's the easiest gig in the NFL...

You come in with a pretty good reputation, you do your best and gain some experience as a head coach, and you eventually depart with $20M or so and no damage to your reputation/blame for failure/mediocrity because you were part of a dysfunctional organization.
