WV Woman Who Called Michelle Obama an "Ape in Heels" Pleads Guilty to FEMA Fraud

The West Virginia woman who grabbed national headlines in 2016 for calling Michelle Obama an "ape" has pleaded guilty to embezzling thousands of dollars in federal disaster relief.

Pamela Taylor, 57, admitted to authorities last week that she falsely registered for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster benefits after a deadly 1,000-year flood event in Clay County, West Virginia, in June 2016. Taylor had claimed that her primary residence was damaged by the floodwaters and that she was forced to stay in a rental property.

But Taylor's home was actually not damaged and she still lived there. She received more than $18,000 in FEMA benefits after submitting the fraudulent application, according to a press release from the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of West Virginia.

Taylor was placed on leave from her position as director of the Clay County Development Corporation in November 2016 after posting a controversial comment about then-first lady Michelle Obama on social media.

"It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels," Taylor wrote on Facebook after Election Day.

Clay County Mayor Beverly Whaling liked Taylor's Facebook post and commented, "Just made my day Pam."

Both women apologized publicly, and Whaling subsequently submitted a letter announcing her resignation, according to ABC affiliate WCHS in Charleston, West Virginia.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The editor of a small-town Alabama newspaper published an editorial calling for "the Ku Klux Klan to night ride again" against "Democrats in the Republican Party and Democrats [who] are plotting to raise taxes in Alabama."

When asked if he felt it was appropriate for the publisher of a newspaper to call for the lynching of Americans, Sutton doubled down on his position.

"... It's not calling for the lynchings of Americans. These are socialist-communists we're talking about. Do you know what socialism and communism is?" Sutton said.

Just shut up and go away.  Stop making things worse.

There isn't any video showing him doing anything wrong and the media smashed him.  That kid wasn't a celebrity, so he wasn't fair game for wild opinions.  They made him a target and I'm not surprised that he's suing.  I would sue too, if the media tried to paint my kid as a racist monster for making the grave mistake of smiling smugly at some crazy guy with a drum.  (Admittedly though, I'd be furious if I caught her in a MAGA hat.)

I don't think he's going to win anything close to 250 million, and I'm not sure the washingtonpost specifically crushed that teen in particular, but I wouldn't be surprised if some media companies quietly settle.  Worth a shot.

I didn't care much about the story until the lame defenses and constant whining backlash from the right came out.  This silly lawsuit [publicity stunt] will of course make the kids more of a target.   But good for his family at trying to make some money off of it and support Trump.

Kentucky high school student Nick Sandmann, who was at the center of a viral video on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Washington Post, alleging that the newspaper rushed to assassinate his character.

The civil lawsuit, which was filed on Tuesday by lawyers Todd McMurtry and Lin Wood, seeks $250 million in both compensatory and punitive damages, according to a statement from law firm Hemmer DeFrank Wessels. “This is only the beginning,” it said.

The Diocese of Covington commissioned a third party to investigate what happened, but a report released last week said it found no evidence that students made offensive or racist comments. It also found no evidence to support allegations that students were chanting “build the wall.”

“The Post rushed to lead the mainstream media to assassinate Nicholas’ character and bully him,” the lawsuit says, alleging that readers were given the false impression that Nicholas instigated a confrontation and then engaged in racist conduct.

“The Post ignored basic journalist standards because it wanted to advance its well-known and easily documented, biased agenda against President Donald J. Trump by impugning individuals perceived to be supporters of the President,” the lawsuit says, adding that Nicholas, who was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, has no history of political activism.

Of course if they're successful, I look forward to successful many lawsuits on similar grounds against Fox and Trump and his administration.

I'm guessing that to a 17 year old being singled out by the national media as a person to be hated feels like a big deal.  He's not "the right" and he's not his parents.  He's a 17 year old kid.  Whatever privilege he may have doesn't make the death threats go away and it doesn't restore his seriously damage reputation.

Maybe this is a publicity stunt engineered by a scheming father, and maybe it's justified anger at being hung out to dry by professionals.  Professionals that should know better than to assume Nathan Phillips was telling the truth without verifying any of it.
