Miami Herald: I’m done trying to understand Trump supporters. Why don’t they try to understand me?

One America News, a right-wing cable news network, on Monday retracted a report claiming that Donald J. Trump’s former fixer had been the person who actually had an affair with the porn star whose claims of a sexual relationship with Mr. Trump are key to his criminal trial.

The retraction came after the fixer, Michael D. Cohen, hired a leading defamation lawyer to address the false report, which was posted on the network’s website on March 27.

The lawyer, Justin Nelson, had represented Dominion Voting Systems in a suit against Fox News that cost that network $787.5 million to settle. Mr. Nelson worked with Mr. Cohen’s longtime lawyer, Danya Perry, in what was a remarkably quick about-face by OAN.

The Real Tragedy Is That Most Trump Supporters Aren’t Stupid

I’m fully convinced that nearly everyone still supporting Donald Trump knows he is a reprehensible human being and guilty of high crimes against this nation—but they simply can’t admit to themselves or anyone else they made a mistake and so they are doubling down again and again.

I'm not sure why he's trying to write a think piece about a people that decidedly don't think in an attempt to explain their behaviors and beliefs.

I think he does a decent job of explaining things, but he doesn't come back to the main issue...which is that these people don't really think.  They're emotional and that's easy to manipulate.  It's like that Einstein quote about judging a fish on its ability to climb a tree; there are geniuses everywhere, some have a really narrow lane in which their genius shines and some a really wide area where their genius can be applied.

So, yes they are stupid in this one area.  Some of them might be highly educated, have great jobs and live in nice neighborhoods.  That's great, but that doesn't mean they're smart when it comes to this one particular lane in life we're discussing.

Because if you ask a Trump supporter why they're voting for Trump, it's because he hates the libs.  He's not a liberal.  He hates the liberals.  He makes the liberals mad, he makes the liberals angry.  He's anti-woke.  They might be able to explain to you that they want a border wall and are anti-illegal immigration, but that's it.  They just know he's not a liberal and he pisses off the liberals.  I'm convinced that's, like, 90% of his appeal for his die hard followers.

But I don't like how he sums up this article:

Quote

In a time when information is available at our fingertips and when conversation and study and exploration are limitless, I’m through excusing supposed adults for not being able to make a decision that is based in reality, simply because they’re in some hateful, self-righteous, nationalistic bubble. That’s their fault, not ours.

It's their fault, not ours...that's correct, but that doesn't absolve us of having to deal with these people and the fact that they're still willing to vote for Trump.

Trump supporters are not a monolith.  My wife is not a MAGAhead (I would say she's a Christian nationalist).   She voted for Biden in 2020.  She has told me she will vote for Trump -- rather against Biden.  It's the typical "The country is not doing well economically, so I won't support the incumbant. Also, LGBTQ gives me the ick and I am against abortion."

Not even sure if she cares about the trial, indictmemts, etc... "Trump's not going to jail, rich people always get off."  Voting "God's way" is how she has voted since she could. "Biden is also a corrupt politician, he's just like Trump.  Why do you support him so much?".  Her brother, my BIL is the same. "I got a really great IT job under Trump and it's because they couldn't outsource to illegal immigrants. Go Trump!"

I watch C-SPAN. The average American voter is so ill informed.  On the segment when it came up to Ukraine funding, 100% all callers were against Ukraine funding.  I was shocked to hear that (this was last week?).  They wanted to spend the money here.  What type of ally are we if we don't care about helping a AN ALLY THAT IS INVADED BY ANOTHER COUNTRY!  This was 6 callers, I think. Also, no party is like, "let's spend the money here!"

Aside from this, we should be throwing the GOP off of the Washington Monument.  I don't really get where my fellow countrymen are, but working so hard and not really paying attention and still bending their ears to the GOP "propoganda machine".  No one is taking away your Bibles, and guns, and it's like .01% of the population is trans yet this is a national discussion for some reason (bathrooms, sports, etc).  It's just very hardened political beliefs... that are wrong.

The Republicans have made their bed with Trump and must now lie in it. But the fact remains that they support him because his large number of supporters keep calling/emailing death threats to Republicans, and they're terrified of crossing him.

Since when is it legal to send death threats??

This **** has always been legal here for a certain segment of the population I don’t dare mention for being labeled a “reverse racist”. The only thing that changed after the civil rights movement was the perception. Once the former Dixiecrats (Republiklans) figured out the cheat codes, i.e. anti-woke, equality as reverse racism, communist, etc., even the perception no longer matters and it became legal and popularly accepted again…for some anyway.

In fact, I think Trump might as well go ahead and adopt the Winnie the Pooh song "Heffalumps and Woozles" to describe his followers' fear of immigrants:

They're black, they're brown, they're up, they're down
They're in, they're out, they're all about

They're far, they're near, they're gone, they're here
They're quick and slick, they're insincere

Beware, beware
Be a very wary bear

I am devastated.  I did not know that the iconic, cute, cuddly Winnie the Pooh is a flat-out racist.

Thanks Obama.

Judge smacks down ex-Trump lawyer’s 'urgent request' to save law license

Former Donald Trump lawyer John Eastman — who aided the former president in his efforts to overturn the 2020 election — was handed a loss Wednesday amid in his efforts to continue practicing law.

Politico's Kyle Cheney reports via X (formerly Twitter), "JUST IN: The judge who recommended John Eastman’s disbarment denies his urgent request to delay her ruling, which resulted in his automatic suspension from practicing law. She cites the gravity of his misconduct and his refusal to acknowledge any wrongdoing."

This comes one month after California State Bar Judge Yvette Roland ruled that "Eastman violated ethics rules when he helped to orchestrate the ex-president's ploy to overturn the 2020 election," according to Politico.

Although the former Trump attorney was given the option to appeal, Politico noted that Roland's ruling forced Eastman's law license into 'inactive' status during pending review — meaning he was barred from practicing law in California.

Trump’s Truth Social: A Spectacular Failure Heading Towards Bankruptcy

For devoted supporters of the MAGA movement, former President Donald Trump’s much-touted venture into the realm of social media with Truth Social appeared to be an assured triumph, especially within conservative circles. However, as reality sets in, it’s becoming increasingly apparent that the platform is not only failing to gain traction but is also on the brink of financial ruin.

Despite Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT) being valued at over $9 billion, largely due to Trump’s influence, Truth Social, its flagship product, is floundering. Recent data paints a grim picture of its performance, showing a steady decline in both user engagement and overall relevance.

Truth Social’s daily active user base in the US, a key metric for any social media platform, has plummeted by 19% year over year, dwindling to a mere 113,000 users on iOS and Android, according to Similarweb. Even with significant events like the Trump criminal trial and the looming presidential election dominating headlines, the platform has failed to capitalize on these opportunities to attract more users.

This downward spiral spells trouble not only for Truth Social but also for Trump himself, who not only holds a substantial stake in Trump Media but also serves as its chairman and most prominent user. The company’s own filings acknowledge the dire consequences of stagnant user growth, warning investors of the imminent threat to its business prospects.

Despite efforts to downplay these alarming trends, Truth Social’s spokesperson, Shannon Devine, insists on highlighting its supposed growth. However, the stark reality contradicts these claims, with Truth Social lagging far behind its competitors in terms of user engagement and overall market share.

Even in comparison to other struggling platforms, Truth Social’s decline stands out. While some competitors have managed to maintain or modestly grow their user base, Truth Social’s trajectory is distinctly downward. Its inability to attract and retain users, coupled with its diminishing web traffic, underscores the fundamental flaws in its business model.

The recent influx of shares to Trump as part of a bonus further complicates the situation, tying his fate even more closely to the floundering venture. With the market volatility surrounding Trump Media’s stock price, the future looks increasingly uncertain, with bankruptcy looming as a distinct possibility.

Trump recently received an additional 36 million shares of Trump Media as part of a bonus package known as earnout shares. With this addition, Trump’s ownership stake in Trump Media now stands at 114.75 million shares, valued at $5.6 billion.
