Revealed: rightwing firm posed as leftist group on Facebook to divide Democrats

 

A digital marketing firm closely linked to the pro-Trump youth group Turning Point USA was responsible for a series of deceptive Facebook ads promoting Green party candidates during the 2018 US midterm elections, the Guardian can reveal.

 

In an apparent attempt to split the Democratic vote in a number of close races, the ads purported to come from an organization called America Progress Now (APN) and used socialist memes and rhetoric to urge leftwing voters to support Green party candidates.

 

Facebook was aware of the true identity of the advertiser – the conservative marketing firm Rally Forge – and the deceptive nature of the ads, documents seen by the Guardian show, but the company determined that they did not violate its policies.

 

Rally Forge would go on to set up a pro-Trump domestic “troll farm” for Turning Point Action, a “sister” organization of Turning Point USA, in 2020, earning a permanent ban from Facebook.

 

“There were no policies at Facebook against pretending to be a group that did not exist, an abuse vector that has also been used by the governments of Honduras and Azerbaijan,” said Sophie Zhang, a former Facebook employee and whistleblower who played a small role in the investigation of the Green party ads.

Fact check: Boebert falsely claims liberals have 'legalized' knowingly spreading HIV

 

Colorado Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, known for her outspoken right-wing views, tweeted last week: "The same liberals that legalized knowingly spreading HIV are now pushing Americans to take COVID tests or show proof of vaccination to enter restaurants. No. We're not playing your games."

 

Facts First: Boebert's claim about liberals legalizing knowingly spreading HIV is false. No state has "legalized" the knowing spread of HIV. Some states, including Iowa under a Republican governor in 2014, have reduced some criminal penalties for people who expose or potentially expose another person to HIV -- so that people with HIV are no longer treated far more punitively than people with other viruses. One Democratic-run state, Illinois, is in the process of eliminating a law that, among other things, makes it a felony for a person with HIV to have sex without a condom without first disclosing their HIV status. But even after the repeal of that HIV-specific law, anyone who intentionally tries to infect someone with the virus could still be prosecuted under the state's general criminal laws.

 

Since Boebert did not respond to a request for comment, we're not certain who she was talking about when she alleged that the same liberals who supposedly legalized the knowing spread of HIV are also "pushing Americans to take COVID tests or show proof of vaccination to enter restaurants."

Boebert's House office referred CNN's questions to a campaign email account, noting that she posted the tweet from her personal Twitter account and not her official congressional account. The campaign account did not reply.

At 34 years old that puts her right around the age that it's very likely she has learned everything she knows (beyond the standardized K-12 education) from the internet.  The things she says, and with a demeanor that suggests she thinks she is providing some real substance, leads me to believe she is not a convert, but instead has been a loon ever since she learned how to turn on a computer.

Aw hell Bang, we're living in a Grimm's fairy tale at this point. The hero never even appears until late in the story, but early on you have to wonder "How in TF did y'all let it get to this?" when you read about the dragon or trolls destroying villages or demanding yearly virgin sacrifices. 

 

I devoutly believe that it hasn't even begun to get bad yet, it will get exponentially worse before we even hear the name of the hero, and it won't be a politician.

Evil gets a lot of leeway..... because evil knows that good doesn’t have the stomach for a fight. Good only fights as a last resort.

 

The Dems don’t consider politics as an arena for battle.... because it isn’t violent. Instead, it is death by a thousand cuts.... and the outcome is the same.

 

Thats what so frustrating to behold. The Dems being in denial. Even when Republicans are outright telling them the rules of engagement.

Evil always runs wild because the essential element of evil is that it respects no limits, has no qualms or morality, they aren't "The ends justify the means", they are "The means justify the means", being brutal and "tough" and heartless is their raison d'etre, it is all about expressing their angst and insecurity and jealousy and lack of internal resources. Has been since we were clubbing each other with the thighbone of an antelope.

 

"Good" (expressed as the opposite/alternative to selfish evil) is busy doin other stuff, planting crops and building libraries and dating hot chicks and all those things that make life better so that whole evil thing seems like a poor use of time and energy, so yes, it IS the last resort. People have shamed Neville Chamberlain but at the time, it was an effort to come to grips with something outside the mindset of normal good. Good will exhaust every option, even in futile efforts to find any alternative to the bloody nightmare of evil's favorite game. 

 

But a last resort is still a resort, and historically, when good gets pushed too far and has to fall back on that last resort it rises up to become an unstoppable force that out horrors the horrors, lays waste with righteous anger until evil submits. And evil weeps and whines about how unfair it is, they were supposed to win, to be the tough guys, to prevail because they were the ones willing to go too far as they slog through the ashes of their cities looking for something to eat. And then you fly over and firebomb their asses again.

 

Sorry/not sorry, we obviously are going to do this again because we didn't learn from previous lessons.
