Burgold
The last year of Shanny was the harder than the first year of Grudes. My expectations (reasonably) were pretty high that year. There was no reason for the defense to fall off a cliff. I accepted the possibility that the offense might start out rough because RGIII might be slow in working his way back from injury, but there was no reason the D should have fallen completely apart the way it did.... well, there's one reason (Haslett) I had small hopes last year, I was willing to roll the dice with Gruden. He checked off a lot of the boxes I wanted for a head coach. He was fairly young, no retread, he coached the opposite side of his HC (so, his success was likely his success,) he had been successful at all levels including the minor leagues, and he was a guy looking to build his legacy. There were negatives too, so my optimism was tempered, but it seemed overall a solid, not exciting choice. The question for last year was Gruden, RGIII, and Orakpo. Could RGIII and Orakpo come be and prove themselves. Was Gruden capable of being the guy? If I'm generous, they earned three incompletes. If I'm honest, three failing grades. So, it was a hard season in that it was a bad season, but it took nowhere near the emotional toll as Shanny's last. This season too, the expectation's are small. This season is about RGIII and Gruden. They're the guys on the hot seat. If they fail each other, I expect both to be on the same bus out of town after the season. The rest, because a season is built on way more than two guys, are interesting sub stories. What would be really cool is if what is happening in the novel I'm working on (yes, I've got another one in progress even as one is being edited) happens to the Redskins. In that story, the figure I thought was going to be the main character wound up being a secondary character. Important and pivotal, but not the one who makes the story work and go. If the Redskins are to be fun this year, it will probably be due to another character emerging who starts stealing the storylines. Mind you, I'd love an RGIII redemption story, but if we're still arguing the same points in December... it'll have been a long season. My honest expectation is that this is a forging season. If our coaches are good coaches and more importantly teachers, we will see an offensive and defensive line forming. We will see a secondary emerge, the running game will get better and the deadly receivers we have will get used. Wouldn't that be something! CSN Redskins @CSNRedskins 15h15 hours ago One Redskin great is eyeing a comeback but has he been away too long? http://ow.ly/PUBk1 #RedskinsTalk I was thinking about this point in the article as well. He has some decent mileage on his body as he had a 9 year career. Its a bit easy to step away from the game for a year to two without being in the constant offseason grind of trying to healthy again year after year, and say I feel great let me get back on that field for a couple more seasons. Last time I saw him play it was really a couple factors at play, he looked liked he lost a couple steps, he really didn't appear to be in great shape, and the Skins didn't have the cap flexibility to truly keep him at a reduced role because of the cap penalty. Again it makes for nice buzz but father time is father time and he really needs to come to grips with that. Having said all that if he wants a legitimate shot to come back even at a reduced role is best option is to get in the best shape possible and stay that way during the season. Then if a team in contention (possibly even the Skins) finds themselves short handed for say 5 or 6 games in trying to make a playoff run he could provide some veteran value. TSO
haha I so don't believe this. Whether you call them big name or not, there will be a bunch of stories <EDITED FOR LENGTH> We already have had the formation of the Pot Roast fan club, calling him the biggest man they've ever seen and stuff. My money is on Culliver not living up to the hype and being replaced by either Hall or Amerson. And what I'm willing to bet is that RG3 will have more games this year like the Houston, Minnesota or Giants games than like the Tampa game. But his mistakes will be extremely highlighted especially because much of the media has turned on him so stuff like him not making the "correct read" will get play, even if we get the first down or win the game. And people will be split on Morris with half thinking we need to get younger and calling for Jones and the other half will still be in love with Morris. Then Jones will make a bad play or have a bad game and people will go into that "that's why he was supposed to be a 5th rounder". I can honestly see the Morris/Matt Jones situation working out similarly to how we did Orakpo and Murphy last year, drafting Murphy, and keeping Orakpo, letting Orakpo go when Murphy played in his spot as a rookie, then everyone questions Murphy and whether he belongs in the league. **Side note, I don't understand how Ian Desmond gets the benefit of the doubt in this town for this being a contract year and that's why he's having a bad year, but Orakpo didn't. Dude had 3 of his first 4 years as a pro bowler and had a bad contract year and people were ready for him to go. I wish we could have signed him back** I'm dying of laughter from this post, not because there's anything necessarily wrong with it or that I disagree with... it's just that it's totally a result of ES on your mental health. We should give this disease a name. God knows I have it. ESTD? PTESD? EScopresis?

Skinsinparadise
Last thing I remember about Cooley was how slow he looked. I love the guy, but no thanks. I doubt he could keep up at this point. Last year, arguably the blocking from the TEs even Paulsen was subpar. If he is 80% of what he once (he was never fast but could get open) and can still block -- maybe? But in a rebuilding year, I wouldn't put him on the roster unless they decide to dump Paulsen. They don't IMO need 4 TEs.
