deejaydana
Hell yeah for DEVO. I remember when they appeared on SNL and it was really their first national exposure.. the talk it generated in school was heavy. ~Bang Do you remember how much hatred and grief they took for their rendition of "Satisfaction?" It's funny how seriously people were offended by their take on that song. Rock snob critics just didn't get it and while it wasn't the best song on this record, I'm sure it made them happy that they agitated the mainstream. SoulSkin
Hey Bang--that last Beatles entry was me screwing up the list and count. I forgot The White Album was really called the Beatles. I went back and edited it to something else but not quick enough. It was # 264. Ya'll take 264 off the list if you want, but The Beatles - The Beatles is listed twice. Gibbs Hog Heaven
270. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts- I Love Rock 'n' Roll (1981) Not the best album in the World by any stretch, but worthy of inclusion for the title track. How many out there had their first introduction to rock with the lead track of this album back at the start of MTV? Cover or not, this still, well, ROCKS!: Hail. Game changing metal album. haha. ya, its a classic. i actually loved 'and justice' too, but 'master' predates it and is equally great, imo. unfortunately, they dont make them like that anymore. drtdrums
275. Dream Theater -- Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory Dream Theater needs to be on this list. While I am not the biggest DT fan, I recognize John Petrucci as one of the greatest guitarists of all time and this album is some of his best work. Both Overture 1928 and the song Home from this album cause every guitarist I've ever known to weep and gnash their teeth at how clean and precise Petrucci's playing is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jHjk6CrscQ&feature=related
Gibbs Hog Heaven
273. Oasis - Definitiely Maybe (1994)If Morning Glory is up there, this needs to be also. Saved me the trouble as it was on my add list my good man. Great taste. 276. The Verve- Urban Hymns (1997) Very little of note has ever come out of Wigan. These boys would be that note. Richard Ashcroft is up there with Lennon and McCartney, Noel Gallagher, Elvis, Ian Curtis et all as one the best song writers to ever come out of England IMHO. Man I miss those guys. Hail. *Edit* Hangs head. I never waited 10 songs since my previous entry. Sorry. My bad. I shall not add for a good few to make up.

Califan007 The Constipated
278. Sly & The Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On Certain albums both define a specific point in time and yet manage to be timeless. Such an album is There's A Riot Going On. After a few records of sexy, sunny, but never cavalier funk/pop, the twisted genius of Sly Stone turned dark, moody, reflective, angry, but no less funky for the contemplation. Stone created an album that spoke not only to the turmoil gripping America in 1971, but also to the chaos whirling around his increasingly druggy personal life. This is an album of dangerous beauty, where even the hit ("Family Affair") is guarded and haunting....The original title of the album was intended to be Africa Talks to You, but was retitled There's a Riot Goin' On in response to Marvin Gaye's landmark album What's Going On (1971), which was released five months prior to Riot. Dan T.
279. Eva Cassidy - Songbird There is room on this list for Bowie, Maryland's Eva Cassidy. Eva Cassidy could not be pigeon-holed into a genre. She sang what she wanted. And she did so with an achingly beautfiful, crystalline voice. She sang jazz, old standards, contemporary. She even recorded with DC Go-Go godfather Chuck Brown and sang backup on local rap albums. She was painfully shy, which early on hindered her achieving success as a singer. Eva died tragically young at age 33 of cancer, at the cusp of what could have been a great career. She did record some music though, and Songbird represents some of the best of those recordings. Listen to her interpretation of Fields of Gold. Here's what Sting had to say about it: A lot of people have covered my songs. And it's a strange emotion, you know, because your own songs are like your own babies. I mean you might hear someone reinterpreting them and maybe you don't agree with what they've done. But this version was just so pure, so excellent, that I was deeply moved by it, and so happy that she covered it. Eva's is one of the best versions of my song I've ever heard...There is something about her voice - a quality - that you can't really put into words. It's a magical quality. People respond to its purity. It suggests something ethereal-- something unattainable. SfPZ_HpnIVY Some of the cuts on Songbird were recorded live at DC's Blues Alley. Five years after her death, a shaky video of her singing "Over the Rainbow" at Blues Alley found its way to a producer of the BBC's MTV-like "Top of the Pops." Despite concerns over the poor quality of the recording, the producer decided to air it. The reaction was astounding. It became the most requested video in the history of that program. 4RDmXsGeiF8 She did record more upbeat songs as well, but these two show her dual gifts of beautiful song interpretation and astounding voice. And there's no doubt that her untimely death adds a layer of sentimentality when listening to her, but her voice stands on its own, even absent the tragic backstory.
