Terrorism in the third world (Mexico)

Hi guys, a lot of you don't know me, well, I guess nobody knows me, I can say I don't have close friends in terms of virtual relationship, like knowing my name, where do I live, what do I do to earn money, etc etc. Only that I love this team as much as you do.

I live in Mexico City, in the heart of this country, I consider myself only an american (the whole continent), of course I feel some kind of love for the ground who saw me born.

Guys, this thread is some kind of free speech expression for me, I want to express myself in a neutral zone.

I feel sad, I feel bad, I feel helpless, I'm afraid, I want to scream and wake up and realize everything is a bad dream.

This country is falling apart, the corruption killed us so many years ago and now we're living the consequences.

Don't believe anything when this thieves in the goverment said: "we're winning the war on drugs" because is BS.

Why do I came to ES to whine about something thats out my hands?

Because the regular and honest citizen is living the worst nightmare, a living hell called Mexico.

We are living terrorism every single day every single day, beheaded persons, kidnapping, robbery, tax for work, and this is happening like I writed before, to the normal citizen.

And if we call the police to report crimes, one or two days the person is found dead, really, no kidding.

Tonight is our indepence nigth celebration, but we don't have anything to celebrate, we live in terrorism.

This afternoon, I saw a scumbag with a gun in his hand searching people to rob, this happen in one the most important avenues. And of course he did it.

A few weeks ago another scumbag killed my brother in law because Daniel (RIP) parked is pick up in front of his window!!! The police caught the SOB but ... thanks to the corruption, this SOB is out of jail at this very moment. And guess what, he's a drug dealer, his whole familiy do this "#$%.

At work, the executives are receiving death threatings if we don't pay "a tax" to the cartels.

The crime is above all law, this SOB's rule this land with all freedom.

If someone knew about the act of terrorism in Monterrey, Mexico (attack of the casino), let me tell you something, this kind of stuff happens daily all around this country but the international news don't say a word.

Even I consider too much time to put this thread and share my feelings with all of you, I don't want to be killed because I report all of this. Down here the cartels are tracking this kind of reports, you know ...

My breakfast since 2006 is blood blood and more blood, death is in the air, and guys this is just the start, and seriously I can feel it near to me.

Everything you can imagine, the worst, everything out of proportion, the cliches about cities with crime lords, the crimes just like the movies: Gotham city or The crow, all of that is just childs play (sp?) next to Mexico.

Just like everybody I want to live a normal life.

Gracias por leer hasta el final, sorry the bad english.

We've been hearing about this for a minute, and feel like **** knowing that's all going on down there. We even heard about the young lady that ran as a police chief in one town, so we know ya'll are fighters and there is resistance down there. I guess my first question would be: do you feel like the international community (including the USA) has abandoned Mexico? Is it easier or harder now to get out of your country?

Stay safe, bro...

It is hard for me to answer your first question, because this site is running in USA, I don't know, I don't want some people turn this letters in the eternal debate: we should go to kick some butts / we need to stay away our troops.

Our troops are alone and out numbered against the crime, if we can get some international help or USA help, I guess I will be happy. But, at the same time I don't want USA troops blood, because all this mess its only the final chapter for years and years of corruption. And the mexican goverment never do *** about it.

It is easy to get out of here, but the problem is that nobody want us in another country LOL. If I had just one chance, a real chance to get out of here and start from zero, I will take it.

Honestly, I feel like a US military intervention into Mexico within the next decade is very likely. Whether at the invitation of the Mexican government or not is the real question. Violence in Mexico has a very real potential to infringe upon the security of the United States, and you better believe that the US will work diligently to take care of it should it get worse (drone strikes in Mexico? Troop deployment?).

All I know is that I don't want to be deployed there. Those cartels are ruthless, well-trained, well-equipped, and audacious. A vicious potential enemy that would have a lot more will to fight than the United States. A fight for survival far outweighs a fight for regional stability/security.

You hear a lot about corruption in Mexico, but it takes on a whole new meaning when you hear someone giving a first hand account...like Murrow in London during the blitz.

You think we'd be looking at another war on the same scale as the Mexican-American war?

Probably not, but that all depends on the Mexican government. My guess would be the Mexican government would receive military aid in the form of drone strikes from the US. If we were to deploy ground troops in Mexico I think it would be as if not more intense as Iraq circa 2006. It would still be asymmetric warfare no matter which way you look at it (unless the Mexican Army ended up fighting the US Army which is incredibly unlikely). The Mexican-American War was not as intense as many people think, but it was still a pretty significant war.

This is the most heart-wrenching post I've ever read on ES. And anything I could say, regarding prayers for you, your family and your country, seem completely inadequate. But unfortunately, that's all I have to offer. I can't imagine living in a place where I literally had to fear for my life on a daily basis. Reading a post like this makes me realize that for all the trials and tribulations I might experience, my life is pretty God damned good. I pray, sincerely, that you will know the sense of peace and safety that I have. That you might have the opportunity to live the life of your dreams, and that you and yours might always be safe in the arms of our Creator. (I don't mean to preach, and I hope it doesn't come across that way. But my faith is what gets me through those times that seem utterly overwhelming. Though as I said, overwhelming to me, doesn't begin to approach what you have to face daily.)

For what it's worth, I do know you. I know you to be someone who is kind, rational, and a valued member of this community. May it always be so. God bless, brother.

Apologies for the computer-generated translation. I hope it's accurate:

Thanks Hog, your post is BEATIFUL and make me feel kind of important in this community, and the most important, it helps me a lot.

Some times I woke up with high levels of depression and we I make my way to home after work, fear is the common feeling.

Trust me, I will fight to the end to live the life of my dreams.

Nice gesture the translation, monday it will be on paper next to my Sean Taylor pic at office :D

Thanks for sharing this with us. It obviously took a lot of courage.

Reading this and knowing how you all are suffering down there makes me wish we could do something to help.

It hurts to see what all those greedy wolves are doing to your country.

(like they're tearing apart a bleeding animal until there's hardly any food left for anyone.)

I wish I had a solution or advice to cheer you up.

All I can suggest is keep doing the right thing and set a good example for others.

Maybe if enough people feel the way you do, something will change.

But in the meantime stay as safe as you can.

Good luck, from one American to another.

And personally I always look forward to seeing your posts, here and the game thread.

I'm always glad to get your perspective on things.

Absolutely what I would have said. I always recognize you because you've got some posts that you can tell are from a Mexican fluent in English, (hell you type better than 80% of the people I see on this board) but you seem incredibly intelligent in your posts and your first post painted a very grim picture (although I expected it) it was incredibly heartbreaking to read.

Best of luck, brother, stay safe.

Dave

The fact of the matter is though Americans (maybe not you personally) CAN do something. As long as the drug trade is being run by the cartels don't use drugs (or at least not drugs that are very likely coming from the cartels). The inability of Americans to follow our own laws are HEAVILY contributing to the issues in Mexico.

My heart goes out to you guys. A horrible condition to live in and with. I wish there was something we, as citizens could do, we covered this yesterday on the radio program I work on and unless you're a stone it gets you. Hopefully, there is an answer that can arrive soon.

Let me first start by saying that you have my deepest prayers and sympathies for the violence going on all around you. I wish I could offer some advice that would change everything, and bring order out of chaos, but I don't. I wish more than anything that I could bring you and your family to safety but I don't know how to do that either. In these and so many more ways I feel helpless when hearing testimonies like yours from these places of violence and war. And so I pray, many see this as a pointless exercise, but not me, I know the true power of God who topples empires and who brings creation from the void.

Pray

Stay faithful in love

Endure

and Conquer through faith

Be safe and take bro.

I want to thank the OP for disturbing my peace today. After reading his testimony I cannot bring myself to look at another "own'd thread" or participate in another endless debate over the rightness of Social Security when there are members of our family who need actual security. I just can't do trivial today.

I think I'll call my Senators and Congressman.

*edit

Offices called...talked to three very nice ladies....I don't feel better.

My father grew up in the DF. He moved down there when he was eight, from Worcester, Mass and stayed until he met my mom (down there for Spanish from Michigan State). My dad grew up there because my grandfathers was a communist and in the land of freedom in the 50's you didn't stay free in the US if you were a commie. He was the kind that rabble roused over schnapps with his friends and managed a shoe factory at the same time. He also drove a Mercedes and was a concert pianist. He was not a danger to Mr. McCarthy or anyone else, he just had misguided (IMO) political philosophy because he saw what fascism did to his country (Germany). Mexico took in family when this country kicked us out. I will always love Mexico, I live 40 miles from Juarez and spent countless hours there in the mercado and various bars and restaurants. I'm sick to stomach over the travesty going on. I hope, and I do best to promote, legalization of at least Marijuana. Brother, I truly feel for you and I wish my country would offer the same safety that yours did my family. It isn't fair.

Our use of America is similar to English who use England when they mean Britain, so your perfectly within your right to call yourself an American. Pisses of Scots and Irish from what I gather. I don't know what to say. I was planning a trip down there this year with my dad to see the things he grew up with (I've been a couple times in the past but not with him and he's getting older) I don't imagine we'll be going.

What's happening to Mexico is a terrible, Rocazares. My condolences on the death (the murder) of your brother-in-law.

I don't know what can be done, but it is a war, after all, right on the U.S.'s doorstep. Mexico's very soul is under assault and at stake, though -- I know that much.

Whatever happens, I hope you and your family can stay safe.

I don't know if this helps, because I know it's expensive to do, but I have a friend from Mexico city who came to Japan to study Japanese and he was allowed to stay as long as he was in school. Either way please be safe if you stay in Mexico!

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/americas/09/15/mexico.violence.internet/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

Latest battlefield in Mexico's drug war: Social media

(CNN) -- Twitter users report gun battles and fiery road blockades. A website lists victims' names and details of how they died. A blog posts gory photos of gruesome killings and videos of drug lords' confessions.

As violence grows across Mexico, online posts dealing with it have also surged at an explosive rate.

This week attackers left ominous threats mentioning two websites on signs beside mutilated bodies in northern Mexico. The message was clear: Post something we don't like online, and you're next. "I am about to get you," one sign said.

More than two days later, it was unclear who the two brutally slain victims left dangling from a bridge were, or whether they had any connection to social media.

Local police in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, didn't answer the phone. State prosecutors said federal authorities were handling the matter. The Mexican Attorney General's Office said it had not received any details about the killings from local officials.

But no matter what investigators uncover, analysts say the case shows the prominent role technology has come to play in describing and denouncing violence in Mexico.

"It's still very telling," said Andres Monroy-Hernandez, a fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society. "Regardless of why they killed these people, the cartels kind of went out of their way and wrote a message explicitly calling out what is being reported on the Internet."

A woman was hogtied and disemboweled. Attackers left her topless, dangling by her feet and hands from a bridge in the border city of Nuevo Laredo earlier this week. A bloodied man next to her was hanging by his hands, his right shoulder severed so deeply the bone was visible.

Signs left near the bodies declared the pair, both apparently in their 20s, were killed for posting denouncements of drug cartel activities on a social network.

"This is going to happen to all of those posting funny things on the Internet," one sign said. "You better (expletive) pay attention."

The Nuevo Laredo case "shows that online messages are worrying a lot of people," said Raul Trejo Delarbre, who studies social media at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. "It shows that uncomfortable topics are being addressed there."

Online posts have become some of the loudest voices reporting violence in Mexico. In some parts of the country, threats from cartels have silenced traditional media. Sometimes even local authorities fear speaking out.
