No. Catchers make themselves prone when they stretch their left leg to block the dish and reach way to the first base side to catch the ball and swipe. Runner has a right to his baseline.

I'd be pretty upset if I had a vested interest in Posey, though. Ouch.

No.

It's been this way HOW long now?

And you want to change the rule for this one injury?

That's the problem with sports. Changing rules than don't need to be changed because of one incident out of thousands of attempts.

This is hardly the first time a catcher has been injured in a home plate collision. Or the tenth. Or the hundredth.

For those that may have missed it.

Out for the year with broken fibula and strained strained/torn ankle ligaments.

As for the question. Nope. And that's the only thing that protect the catcher in that situation. It was a good clean hit by the baserunner and Posey did a good job blocking the plate,(didn't come up with a not a great thrown ball though),and got his leg caught under him. Ouch. Feel bad for the guy though.

So it's okay then for a runner going from first to second, at full speed, to lower his shoulder an plow into the SS, right?

No, because that's not a part of the game. And if a guy did that, he would get drilled in the middle of the back next time up.

You can make a legal, hard slide within the paths, though.

Runners take out fielders trying to turn double plays all the time. And there are collisions at 1st. It's all part of the game.

Sucks Posey got hurt but please MLB, for the love of God, don't start going reactionary like the NFL and start changing the rules every year.

Too many damn commissioners these days are getting soft, and changing the rules. Keep it the same, i just hope that the MLB and NHL dont go the route that the NFL and NBA have been doing the past few years and trying to make the game "safer."

Take the only physical aspect of baseball away outside of adjusting one's cup? No thanks....

You've obviously never been a middle infielder with guys sliding into second, trying to take you out. Or standing in the batter's box, with a pitcher throwing inside to you at 90 mph+.

There are more physical aspects of baseball than just the collisions at home. And hell, try being a catcher some day. Those guys get beat up all the hell every game.

Never played the game before, huh?
