NYT: West Virginia Teachers Give a Lesson in Union Power

West Virginia teachers strike to go on over elusive pay deal

I graduated high school in 1986, they never went on strike when I was in school.

Right now, they said the missed days would be added to the end of the year but I think their Spring Break will be the next casuality.

That's what West Virginians gets for giving GOP full control.

I can't find any numbers on what that increasing cost of healthcare for these teachers will look like in real dollars.  Some articles mention that what teachers are expected to pay is set to rise significantly or say things like "double."  What's the actual average increase and how does that compare to what teachers from other states have to pay for health care?  Average salaries seem to be a somewhat meaningless number if they don't subtract what teachers have to payout as their healthcare contribution.

So Democrats control the  school board votes for this along with the mandatory app use, but somehow it's the GPS fault. Smh

Is that 300 more a year, month, or per check?  If it's the monthly or worse, that's an enormous pay cut.  I'm fairly certain I'd have to be escorted (carried) from the building if my employer told me that I'd be both getting a massive pay cut and that I would be forced to track my steps on an app.  Chairs would be thrown, feelings would be hurt.

Teachers should not be able to go on strike. They should be considered essential. WTF did the students do to deserve losing spring break or going longer in to the summer? What about the seniors? They need paperwork for college admissions.

This is already a wildcat strike so not sure how you prevent teachers from going on strike. Force them to work at gunpoint maybe? West Virginia is already having a tough time filling teaching slots now and if they take any actions against striking teachers it's gonna be a hell of a lot harder to fill those spots.

Pretty sure they aren't paid like essential personnel.  West Virginia's average teacher wage is bottom 5 in the country, and I don't blame them for being upset if their 1% raise doesn't keep up with cost of living.  If we treated teacher's like essential personnel, maybe then they'll act like it, but we don't.

Also the parents who now need to find child care.

Disagree. No one's going to die if teacher's don't go to work.

Interestingly enough, I believe janitors and school cafeteria workers are considered essential while teachers aren't.
