RCC - Washington's Best Kept Secret? Darrel Young

There may not be a player in the entire NFL that the term ‘quiet achiever’ applies to more than Redskins Fullback Darrel Young.  Not only does Young dedicate a considerable amount of his own time to working with charities and visiting US troops overseas, he does it all without promoting himself on social media; he does not have a Twitter, Instagram or Facebook account.

A rare specimen in 2015, indeed.

Mike Shanahan can be blamed for a number of things, but he should be applauded for many as well. One of his first moves with the Redskins, potentially the first (cannot remember), was having Young switch positions. Loved the move at the time because of his love of contact, good instincts and the potential that his hands offered - arguably the biggest reason for the switch. This offense will emphasize Young in the power running and the downfield attack provides check-down chances.

Been a DY fan for some time.  He really seems like one of those lunch pail guys who makes lots of other people look good, too.

And I've got high hopes that Coach Jay will find him really useful, both as lead blocker for AlMo, and as "big guy who can catch the ball".  I've been wondering if maybe he can help compensate for what seems to be a kinda "meh" roster of TEs, too.

this guy is not utilized enough as an offensive threat, he should see at least 5-6 touches a game ...only got 9 rushing attempts and 14 pass targets last year. not enough!

his athleticism is amazing for a fullback ...i've seen him spin, juke, maybe even hurdle - I'm mean, he's no Roy Helu, but he can hurdle!

He should be in the backfield every play - especially with us not having any real blocking TE on the roster.

Remember - Gruden has a "System" damn what the players are good at run the "System"  This is why he will not be back next year.

I mean the guy only can really help in goal line situations. I just never got the fascination with him. I guess he scores a lot of TDs but it's not like he's the one making the play. I'm not knocking him, i just don't get it.

Like can you line him out wide and have him run a route like a TE? I doubt it. That TD he scored against JAX was the result of a coverage break down.

He's not particularly fast or agile. His hands are pretty decent though.

He seems to be a great lead blocker. He seems to do well catching the ball out of the backfield if he's given just a little space. When they have him in there regularly it opens up the quick hand off to get a couple yards, and he normally gets it; that's a play open anywhere on the field as long as you are actively using him throughout the game.

It seems like they have no interest in doing any of that with him.

*shrug*

Caught part of an interview with Jay where he stated they didn't want to use him as semi-TE on the line because his arms are too small to go up against linebackers right on the line with him.

My guess is they saw this in practice, but that doesn't explain not putting him in the backfield with Morris.

Even when Shanny was here, there was a definitive difference in the rushing attack when DY was missing or injured. I have a feeling we'll see him this week, "code red" and all. I hope that means all hands on deck, or something like that.

Yeah, DY's not a standout in any real way, but the dude just gets it done. Very sure hands, often plows his way for more yards than you'd expect after catching passes, is a solid blocker and a solid runner. Health and injuries aren't a problem either. Just a really nice piece to have in the arsenal... assuming you use him.

He's been one of the best kept secrets for a while and unfortunately we haven't been using him.

I could see him as a Mack Strong type if he's used properly.  Single back, running the ball or getting screens, or providing pass pro.

I knew it was going to be a little different for DY in that Jay doesn't necessarily like to use a FB.

when he was first converted to FB he did a radio interview and I remember him saying that he liked the switch and will be good at it, because he just likes hitting people.

it shows when he blocks.

get this guy involved more he wrecks people when given the chance :\

I'm dumbfounded that we haven't seen a goal line or even short yardage situation go to DY. He's extremely under utilized. He's a great receiving back that always runs the first guy over and gets yac. We've seen the sprint out from Kirk and the offense at least twice already. Yet I haven't seen a simple play action pass to him in the flats all year. A fullback dive on third and one is stupid and predictable. But you hit him on second and short or the even first down its money - run or pass. As we struggle to field competent tight ends its mind boggling we don't use DY more. He simply produces.

Again our "offensive " genius  cant fit him into a cookie cutter pattern so he has no clue how to use him.

Hell you want to fix the running game - put DY in and then Morris or run an offensive with both Morris and Jones in a split backfield, or a power I with all three in an I formation in the backfield.

Try something different
