The Product Recommendation Thread

Spaceman Spiff

Recommended Posts

We’ve got a lot of good threads on here about eating, drinking, reading, movies, tv shows but we don’t have anything as a general product recommendation thread.

It can be anything, household products, car products, work productivity items, clothes, subscriptions, etc.

Or, obviously, products you don’t recommend.

Go.

As per my comment in the RTT, I don't recommend Pirelli tires.  The set that came with my new car only lasted 27K miles, and they weren't Z rated soft rubber, and didn't wear unevenly, they just suck and don't last long.

For me it's simple. Does it do what it says it's going to do, and I'd have to say the best product i've ever run across that is a perfect example is Rain-X.
I've been putting it on my windshields for almost my entire adult life, and it works exactly as advertised.
I know most people likely know this by now, but still. It is the BEST.

Quite frequently, manufacturers require that tire brands provide OE tires with especially soft/pliable compounds.  This is so the vehicle rides and handles and brakes especially nice during the buying process.  Of course, these softer compounds do not last very long.  This happens with every vehicle brand and every tire brand.

KT Tape. I use it on my heels when plantar fasciitis is acting up, and I've used it on my knee. It works great. I play pickleball, which isn't as hard on my knees as tennis was, but it's still a lot of flexing and wind-sprinting. If I tape it, I feel great.

There are a zillion videos on YouTube to show you how to tape for practically anything. It works.

The nerve/muscle pain stuff I shared helped with my plantar stuff. Just put it on a few times a day. Morning and bed time.

Olukai flip flops

I’ll see your Olukai flip flops and raise with Adidas comfort slides:

I have two pair for outside the house (the ones I bought last year which are well worn) and two pair for inside the house (new this year). The wife went ahead and bought a pair for outside and inside earlier this year, too.

The key is get the comfort slides, not the regular ones that are hard plastic and decidedly uncomfortable. The comfort ones are soft foam that get softer with time. And this years model, the put the soft foam on the inside of the band that goes across your foot.

They’re cheap, pretty durable (have walked outside with them several times over a mile) and really comfortable.

Yeah, with rain-x treatment, I don't even use my windshield wipers on the highway; the wind is enough to blow the rain right off the windshield.

yaass.  I drove back to ATL from VA with no working wipers in a snowstorm.  Stayed behind a large-haul so everything would blow over me (Subaru wagon, I loved that car).  That stuff is magic, but the wipers suck.

Maybe so, but they're doing their brand name a disservice in the process.  The dealer wanted to replace the tires with the same brand/model, and I went out of my way to find something different and better (and get them replaced somewhere else).  And now I'll never buy Pirellis again, so I'm not sure that's a great trade-off for the tire manufacturer.

I've had a pair for what seems like over ten years now. I'm looking at them, in fact. They're terrific.

anti recommendations...

I am not happy my 2016 Vizio TV died.   It replaced a 14 year old Sony CRT that was still alive.

Honeywell water heater gas valves.  Had one break at 3 years.  3 years!  It's all over the Internet that these are breaking and have been for like 10+ years.  $300 part.  Type of job a 3d printer and raspberry pi should be able to fix.

You freaked me out...just made a call to the dude that handles all that stuff in my house!  He says I'm ok.  (I'm surprised he answered this late on a Friday!)
