The Everything 118th Congress Thread

I think there are rules about marketing alcohol on shows kids gravitate to but maybe I’m wrong. Using someone kids gravitate towards is an interesting tangent to the original idea. It’s worth asking questions about.

but the goal should be to figure out if this violates rules, or if it doesn’t then does it justify there being rules this would violate so it doesn’t happen again.

and telling them it can all go away if they just reverse course is shady. It’s happened - it’s either worth pursuing the way I outlined or thats it. A public apology and severing ties doesn’t address whether this is a violation or should be.

Republican witness faces questions over whether he lied under oath to key panel

A key Republican witness is facing questions over whether he lied under oath about receiving financial aid from an ally of former US president Donald Trump.

Garret O’Boyle, a former FBI field agent turned purported whistleblower, testified last week to a congressional panel investigating what Republicans assert is the “weaponisation” of the federal government against conservatives.

At one point, O’Boyle was asked by Democrat Dan Goldman whether Kash Patel, who held multiple roles in the Trump administration, is helping finance O’Boyle’s legal counsel. The witness replied: “Not that I’m aware of.”

The answer has raised eyebrows because, during a previous interview with the House of Representatives’ weaponisation subcommittee in February, O’Boyle disclosed that his legal fees are being paid by a nonprofit organisation called Fight With Kash, also known as the Kash Foundation and run by Kash Patel.

Furthermore, a Democratic staff report published in March notes that Patel arranged for Jesse Binnall, who served as Trump’s top “election fraud” lawyer in 2020, to serve as counsel for O’Boyle. Binnall sits on the Kash Foundation’s board of directors and has acknowledged working on past lawsuits funded by the foundation.

In light of these details, Democrats are concerned that O’Boyle was not fully truthful before the committee chaired by Republican Jim Jordan, a staunch Trump backer. Lying to Congress carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment.

Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign from Congress

U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart plans to resign his seat in Congress. That announcement could come as early as Wednesday morning.

Multiple sources have confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune that Stewart announced his plan to resign, citing ongoing health issues with his wife. It was unclear what those health issues may be.

Legislation to Mandate AM in Cars Is Introduced in Congress

There is some good news for AM for a change today. Bills have been introduced in both houses that would protect the presence of free AM radio in cars. The bills are being pushed by prominent members of both political parties and have backing from the chairwoman of the FCC.

The “AM for Every Vehicle Act” would direct federal regulators to require automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in their new vehicles at no additional charge. The National Association of Broadcasters welcomed the move, which is also backed by the National Association of Farm Broadcasting.

Senators Ed Markey, a Democrat, and Ted Cruz, a Republican, are the headliners, but the sponsors also include Sens. Tammy Baldwin, Deb Fischer, Ben Ray Luján and J.D. Vance, as well as Reps. Josh Gottheimer, Bruce Westerman, Tom Kean Jr., Rob Menendez and Maria Gluesenkamp Perez.

The act would direct the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a rule requiring automakers to maintain AM broadcast radio in their vehicles without a separate or additional payment, fee or surcharge. It says AM should be clearly visible on the vehicle’s dashboard; and until the new standard would take effect, cars lacking AM radio receivers would have to be labeled as such for buyers.

I know people may laugh at this, but in the event of an emergency, AM has far better range and (anyone can correct me on this) satellite radio is rarely if ever free.

I remember how the cell phone towers got overwhelmed in DC and NYC at minimum during 9/11, sometimes less is more, so I'm all for this.

All roads lead to Giuliani in the GOP’s quest for Biden dirt

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Ky., is very upset with FBI Director Chris Wray. At issue is a document that Comer has subpoenaed from the bureau that he and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, have said “describes an alleged criminal scheme involving then-Vice President [Joe] Biden and a foreign national relating to the exchange of money for policy decisions.”

That sounds like the kind of thing that Congress should definitely look into. There’s just one problem: According to CNN, the original source of the claim came from a slew of material, “many originating from sources in Ukraine,” that former credible person Rudy Giuliani provided to the Department of Justice in 2020. (NBC News has yet to independently verify CNN’s reporting on the contents of the document that has been subpoenaed.) That would mean that House Republicans are somehow still committed to following Giuliani down the exact same rabbit hole he has been plummeting to the bottom of for years.

This the same Rudy Giuliani that Trump sent to Ukraine, with a handwritten letter on White House letterhead, stating that Guilani has no official government position, and is representing Donald Trump personally, and not the President, nor the United States, and therefore using no State Department translators (who keep records of what was said), and asking Ukraine to not keep any records of what was said, either?  For the purpose of explaining to the Ukes that their military aid would be released just as soon as their country claims to have dirt on Hunter Biden?
