Fox8: Watching porn now requires age verification in Louisiana because of new law. Adult sites pull out (😏) of Virginia due to new law.

We need GDPR equivalent in the US asap (preferably stronger at this point).

I missed this when I first read your post.Β
Β

I have, at several points in the past, in different threads about the general idea, told people that if they wanted to understand how it should be, go read up on the GDPR.Β
Β

or if you’re looking at legislation proposals for the US, you would be best served to compare it to the GDPR. Β I’d they align, it’s probably a good thing. If they don’t, it’s probably a bad thing. And I’m willing to bet you can get away with just that analysis and be correct.Β
Β

The GDPR is pretty good. And they enforce it. Strictly. Lots of US companies have gotten in lots of trouble over there for some of the more benign things they do. And every time I read about a new enforcement or investigation I always chuckle at what suckers we are over here in the US.Β
Β

Cause if you’re objective, we, as a whole, and it isn’t just internet/tech related, seem to love being suckers to our corporate overlords and the politicians they put into power.Β
Β

I tend to think that if the founding fathers could be brought back for a month to analyze the current state of the government, they’re eventually just look at each other and go β€œthese ****ing idiots” - in reference to us, the people.Β

Nord VPN is about to start making big money. Good for them!Β

Β

Edit: Good for them unless these bozo people that made the law has any part of ownership of VPN companies which is likely the case.

Hmm...what's gonna happen first:

Β

1. VPN companies advertising their ability to circumvent government Porn Site "Age Verification"

Β

2. Government coming directly after VPN companies for helping circumvent their Porn Site "Age Verification"

Β

I'm not optimistic on who wins this one whenever it happens...

It would be on a state by state basis. If they local politicians want to make this an even bigger fight and risk ticking their voters off, I'm all for seeing how it would play out.

Β

Even so, there will be some other way around their worthless ban. It is what it is :)

I did the research. You are correct. However, it’s not all the sites. I’ll report back in July.

Β

Knew a guy back in undergrad who wouldn't shake people's hand because the right hand was considered unclean where he came from (I legit forget if it was culture or religious reason).

Β

Told him with a straight face he didnt need to worry about me because I needed my right hand for the mouse.

Β

Wash your hands before your report back, m'kay?

Aren't we passed the point of recognizing how many local politicians don't care about ticking off their voters like Exhibit A here in this thread?

Β

I can't be the only person concerned Feds had or still has backdoors into US-based commercial VPN options same way they did our ISPs during the PRISM program.

I think if you are purchasing a VPN you are 18 years old or older in most cases. I doubt the government has legal standinding and I highly doubt VPNs will advertise porn as a reason to sign up. Besides it isn’t illegal to watch porn. The onus is on the websites, not the end user.

Β

Β

I think this leads to people using less scrupulous porn sites, based overseas and not subject to the threat of civil lawsuits like (for example) pornhub is. Which ultimately could be more damaging to minors.

They probably do, but I don’t think they are exposing that ability to go after VPNs for providing access to legal porn.

Isn't the intent of this law coming back to stopping individuals UNDER 18 from getting to online porn?Β  Good point bringing up age restrictions for VPNs, but I never hear of that and can't find one here:

Β

Β

Agreed it seems dumb to advertise watching porn in privacy...so expect their version of a dog whistle if this gets to a certain amount of states...why not if porn isn't illegal but people care about their privacy?Β

This I agree on, if a solution for age verification predicated on zero knowledge does take hold there's a high chance this is what happens.

Β

Last time they didn't expose anything, they had to be directly snitched on and exposed how bad it was what they could see.Β  PRISM was completely out of control, we are fortunate they supposedly kept to the spirit of focusing on stopping terrorism.

That’s exactly what pornhub is telling its viewers.
