When I watch a tv show that contains violence should I have to register and prove my age?

do you agree with someone asking for an id when buying beer? Just make it harder for kids. keep making it tougher.

Have you ever met someone underage who is unable to access alcohol?

Again, kids are still going to be able to access porn if they want to.

We’re making it tougher on the kids? That’s adorable.

Isn't it amazing how a privately owned website can police content that's allowed? Mind blowing!!!

If only there were tools that people could use to restrict access to sites on devices that their kids use.

Multiple people have told you why this law is useless and won't do a damn thing. Yet you persist even resorting to name calling.

Can someone remind me if proxy servers and VPNs still exist? 🤭

@dunfer Let me give you a better answer. You asked if I agree with someone asking for ID when I buy beer.

I don’t care that they do (sometimes). I just don’t think that it matters. At all. Look at Europe where drinking laws are lax. They don’t have bigger societal problems/negative scenarios with underage drinking than we do in the states. This law, endorsed by sweater vest, is a solution (an ineffective one) looking for a problem. A way to score points.

You would think with all this free access to porn, teen pregnancy would skyrocket. Surely these kids (who’s gonna think about the kids) are unable to process what they see. Yet, teen pregnancies have been consistently down.

https://abcnews.go.com/amp/Health/teenage-birth-rates-us-reached-historic-lows-2022/story?id=99720479

Now maybe whether or not a lower teenage pregnancy rate is a good thing is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe people want more government. To each their own, I guess.

Now that I’ve answered your question about underage drinking laws, will you answer whether or not the government should take a more proactive role in regulating music/tv/movies/video games?

it is gross, but you left out the fact that we are talking about kids

No, you're talking about children. I find it amusing that children are always the first thing that conservstives think about when it comes to nude bodies. But not when its guns. Or poverty.

No, you should be responsible for securing devices that your kids have or get rid of the internet if you feel like the kids aren't responsible enough to access it.

My opinion on the uselessness of the law would not change regardless of the party affiliation (as I understand it, the bill enjoyed wide support from both sides probably because no one wants to be labeled pro child access to porn)

It's a nothingburger bill.  It doesn't take a computer scientist to figure out that there are so many ways to bypass the regional check.  You mentioned equivalent of an ID check for alcohol.  Imagine requiring an ID check when a handwritten self attestation is considered a valid ID.  That's what we have.  The notion that kids motivated to access porn can't figure out some of the most rudimentary forms of bypass available on the internet is naive as it is patently ridiculous.  Any bill predicated on such a ludicrous false assumption deserves every bit of scorn coming it's way.

Unfortunately for the bill, that's not where the shortcomings stop.  Imagine passing an ID check law for every liquor store, but not when you buy alcohol at a grocery store.  That's what we have with this bill.  Only content providers who have at least 33% of their content qualify as pornography are covered (I'm not even going to touch whether the statutory definition of pornography will pass 1st amendment or vagueness muster).  Somebody want to do a quick assessment on whether porn accounts for 33% of the content on reddit or discord? (Since the statute leaves out whether 33% is based on data size or content count, I'll let you pick.  Don't expect such muddled leniency from a trial judge though).  And since the law doesn't specify what counts as the site's content, I would imagine it would be pretty easy for a porn site to just link to an offshore server for porn and also  YouTube and other streaming sites and say we have less than 33% of porn content.

Where the law gets especially galling when pushed by conservatives, is that for what seems like an eternity, conservatives always harped on personal responsibility.  Product safety laws?  Too burdensome on private businesses, consumers should exercise personal responsibility.  Kids are falling behind in school?  Don't look to the government for assistance, exercise some personal responsibility and take ownership of their education.  Any law with even the tiniest hint of gun regulation?  You are burdening lawful gun owners who are simply exercising their constitutional rights, people should exercise personal responsibility.  Funny how personal and parental responsibility goes out the window when it comes time for the GOP to gin up the base by stirring up the pot with sex and corruption of children.

Just wondering how many of the people arguing that we shouldn't allow the government to restrict access to porn, on the grounds that unauthorized people will still get it anyway, apply the same reasoning to restrictions on gun purchases.

I do/have.

I generally am against making new laws that don’t accomplish what is supposed to be accomplished.

It’s question number 2.

question number 1 is, is this a stupid idea

if it passes that, question number 2 is does it actually accomplish what the claimed purpose is

if it passes that, question numbers 3 is whether there is justification for government intervention on the issue

this one doesn’t pass question 1. It’s stupid because think this would do anything requires not understanding much about the internet.

they might as well pass a law requiring guns not to fire if the intentions of the shooter are criminal. Sounds great. Unfortunately it’s not the way things work.

Let me know when shooting guns will improve your math skills. 🧮

5. Porn makes you better at math.

Even if you’re not masturbating, simply watching porn or reading erotica helps alleviate stress. In possibly the best study in existence from Carnegie Mellon, researchers forced men to look at semi-erotic photos (think Victoria’s Secret catalogs) and then take a math test. Results showed that the men who looked at erotic photos actually did a lot better on the test than men who had, I guess, flipped through "Better Homes and Gardens."

Why? Looking at semi-erotic pictures reduced men’s cortisol (the stress hormone) by half. Lower stress = better concentration (and better mental performance in general). This is also true of women, so ladies, the next time you find yourself faced with a long division problem, perhaps you should pick up that "Fifty Shades of Grey" novel.

So in thinking about things that might actually work (keyword might)

I started with requiring payment. Outlaw free porn. Require a paper trail and access to money and willingness to spend it that way would probably actually put a dent in things.

but that seems like pushing at the margins.

so maybe outlawing advertising on porn sites.

by definition they then would have to charge, they wouldn’t otherwise have income.

of course anyone knowing enough to know tor exists, is able to get around that. And I’m not sure how enforceable that is with overseas stuff

but ultimately it cracks me up they think an ID check like this would stop it.

imagine if these people found out how many kids are ordering the hardest to get drugs over the internet and they’re being delivered by the United States postal service. They’d blow a gasket
