I don’t want to draft him at 2 but I honestly won’t be surprised if Penix becomes the best QB from this draft in the NFL

His use of leverage to me is the best of the top 6 guys and not really close for me.

Again not saying for 2, just in general a comment

If he goes to a good team like Miami or Dallas he'll kill it.

If it weren't for his glaring, inescapable, serious, injury concerns, I think Penix would possibly be my preferred candidate at 1.2.

He has a true Howitzer, pocket presence, throws accurately short, middle, and long, and he has the character, tenacity, desire, and willpower to overcome all those debilitating injuries.

Someone may just luck out and get the best passer in the draft in the late first or early second round.

I wish him good fortune.

I'd still be concerned about how he handles pressure. He was behind the best OL in the nation and rarely faced pressure (which his why he rarely had to scramble). Once he did, during the championship game, he fell apart.

This whole conversation is exhausting.

Daniels elbow, Mate’s footwork, Williams, and McCarthy is subpar because his team won or something.

Too much chest thumping, not enough open thinking.

Yes, I too had similar thoughts when I first signed up for ES almost 20 years ago.

Not sure about today, but apparently no Bears staff at Daniels' pro day yesterday.

Thats not true. Poles was there (as were a ton of other Bears staff - more than likely to see Nabers though). Poles is not going to Maye/UNC pro day though.

Who knew???

He's got pretty explosive pocket movement, but a 4.5 40 is surprising.  Looking at that clip of him running it, the start was really good and explains the excellent time.  Looks like he's got some track skill and is a really coordinated athlete.

He can move around and create, he just does it from inside the pocket and behind the LoS.  Tom Brady is the ultimate example of what superior functional mobility looks like for a pocket passer.  Everyone always clowns Brady as an athlete, but they're undervaluing how fluid and explosive his pocket movement is.  He gets great depth and speed on his drops, when he has to drift he gets like two yards of space per stride and is always on balance, and he is unbelievably good at shifting his shoulders and hips to avoid contact.  Penix has some of that in his game.

Boy, I don't know how widespread this problem is, but as a club-fingered keyboardist, I resent how long it takes to edit and how woefully inept most auto correct or spell check programs work.

I especially hate reading after my edits how often some inept correction has still absolutely changed the pov I was posting. 😄

Also when they give you a list of words it offers in the "did you mean one of these" manner, and with the same club fingers you tap the one you meant, but then you're rereading the post and you see somehow you tapped a different word that makes the post read wonky. It's not easy being a caveman these days.

Speaking of JJ, I was surprised to watch Kyle brandt on gmfb this Tues. He's been consistent in his descriptions that JJ  had that much of a chance to go in the top five.

He figured it was just media draft noise to get attention  per usual this time of year and that's a shtick he always loathes--- insincere or wild stretches of takes to generate interest more than be coming from valid info or actual sound reasoning.

But Tues he said he's heard enough now from people in the know he trusts that he's changed his mind on the level of possibility. He even said he wouldn't be shocked to see the commanders take him at two. I don't think it's likely at all, but I did find his turnaround interesting.

I'll say this: combining the best arguments I've heard for taking him high,  plus the level of grace I'm willing to give out new f.o. based on their group competency  as I view it, I wouldn't devastated and could still be hopeful but I would be disappointed if it's anyone other than Maye or Daniels.

Honestly all the discussion and back and forth about which guy is worth the #2 spot just makes me more comfortable that whoever we take must have something worth developing. Whoever it is, there is a reason there is this much discussion when usually, in my view, there isn't.

To a certain degree this is all about development. You find a guy with traits you think you can work with and add to, and you make them the best version of themselves. At that point, its less about the guy and more about the situation you put him in. I am super comfortable with our org making that kind of decision right now.

I don't know if that makes sense. Its certainly not a big brain view of things. But in my very amateur opinion I can see how we are a good landing spot for all of them. This may be the best spot for a rookie QB available right now.

Yeah, that championship game was definitely sobering.

I was really rooting for the kid, but he looked almost overwhelmed at times and if memory serves (a rare treat these days) he tweeked his knee which only served to amplify injury concerns.

If he had played well and/or if his offensive line had been stouter against that Michigan defensive front 7, who knows what the conversation would be today.

Thanks and sorry, saw something yesterday I thought said no Bears staff there.

Edit: I think I just saw that Bears were not meeting with Daniels at the pro day, sorry again.

That just happened in my previous post!

I wrote the word tweeked (as in minor injury) and it auto-corrected to tweeted which made absolutely no sense at all. lol

This is where I am.  For all of the vigorous discussion (from folks who know better than I and can form an opinion about a prospect) I am 100% relaxed when it comes to the new people in charge making this pick.  Relaxed, and excited that we will have in the span of a year overturned the 4 most important people in a football organization, that being Owner, GM, Coach, QB.  Unthinkable not that long ago.

One thing to keep in mind re: Teams at UNC pro day, there's not a lot of players to really look at.

You got Maye, who is gone by 4.

You got Tez Walker who is fast and that's about it.

And then Cedric Gray on defense at ILB.

And that's pretty much it.  Just not much for people to look at unless they are maybe in the Maye sweepstakes.

Yeah I've mostly come to the same conclusion after focusing on Walker a bit more while watching Maye's film and games. He basically is garbage. The only thing he has is pure speed. He runs imprecise and lazy routes, doesn't get much separation (unless he can just run by the guy, which certainly happened at times), and has a terrible case of the dropsies. And he was Maye's best WR   :ols:

I'm not sure why they would. Its a waste of time and resources. It doesn't even make sense to when teams picking outside the top 5 attend.

They sent an entire contingent to see Bo Nix's pro day from what I read. I have no idea why but they did. I assume theyr'e attending these others too?

He's fast tho.

Realtalk I do wonder how much the OC for UNC held them back.  I'm watching these plays where it's empty backfield 3 receivers and all the routes are designed for 30 yard passes.

And if the OC is calling stuff like that does that filter down to coaching for routes and the like? Is Tez salvagable?

I probably don't bother before the 3rd with Tez and that's only if he promises to spend an hour a day on the jugs machine.

I like the pre-session film breakdown they're doing, good stuff.

Edit: They didn't have to show him getting body-slammed on a run up the middle though, ouch lol.

Best thing I've heard since the college season ended, is Mack Brown talking about what a great leader and person Maye is, says "he doesn't even drink."

So we don't have to worry about any Drunk Eli pics, thank glob.
