Lawrence is probably the only rookie who can come right in and look like a solid NFL QB. To me, every other rookie should at least get some time to sit behind someone else, especially with this shortened offseason. So no matter what, any rookie who we get I think should sit for a period of time.

Well, that’s what Fitz is for.

 

I actually don’t agree here. I think any of the top 5, including Lance, can play year one. I also think any of the top 5, including Lawrence, would benefit from time watching and learning. 
 

Watching that Elite 11 camp that Dilfer holds for HS guys that featured Fields and Lawrence was fun. It showed that Lawrence, despite always being more highly considered than Fields, isn’t as clean of a prospect as many here believe him to be. And Fields seems to come out on top more often than not when the two of them meet head to head.

 

I still don’t think he has as high of a ceiling as Justin Fields. Lawrence is a good QB but he has problems. 

I still think Fields has the highest upside of any of these guys. I think Lawrence has the lowest bust chance. Pick your poison.

Lawrence is "safe" because he's been in the public limelight since like High School. I think he was the projected #1 overall pick since his Freshman year at Clemson and he hasn't really wilted at all. I don't think he'll be a superstar in the NFL but I think he'll at the very least be a solid 10+ year starter that can occasionally win a ring or two. Think Eli Manning(who was also #1 overall pick) or Joe Flacco-ish.

When I watch Fields I get Russell Wilson vibes. Maybe it’s Fields’ elite baseball background (was a potential future 1st rounder but gave it up in HS).

 

Fields’ character, worth ethic and toughness is equal or better than any QB in this draft.

 

Lance scares me much more than Fields, based on experience factor and age.

Oh he's much better than both of them.

 

He's safer because his play doesn't rely on his legs as much as Fields' play does. Despite that fact I like Fields arm and reads and accuracy, the use of his legs increases his bust chance long term but, simultaneously it increases his boom factor. Lawrence can use his legs but is more pocket driven. He's safe because his style of play is safer. Not because he was projected to be the #1 guy all along. He and Fields were neck and neck literally at every turn. I'm not sure why they aren't now.

Love the idea of going to get Fields. He is a perfect fit, tough as nails, leader, plays through anything. At times can make some rough decisions and I have noticed that he has some off games. But overall he is extremely consistent and his legs make him a tremendous running threat. If his arm/mind take some time he can use his legs (ala Josh Allen) to create positive offense while he develops. I don't think his arm/mind need time, though. And even in his bad games he seems to come alive at points during them to give his team a chance.

I think his fit within the offense is stellar. A mobile quarterback can alleviate not having Christian McCaffrey. Add in Antonio Gibson and you have a guy who can do some of the CMC stuff and you now have a mobile threat and a RB that can be used as a dual threat. Now add McClaurin, Samuel, Thomas, Humphries and Cam Sims to that and you have a very layered offense.

 

His mobility also helps the offensive line. 

 

I think as a passer he is far above Trey Lance at the moment (though I like Lance's upside). He is a gamer and his teammates seem to love him.

 

He played two weeks of college football with broken ribs. That he suffered during a game. And he didn't stop playing. He stayed. He refused to quit. He threw six touchdowns on broken ribs. That tells you a lot about his character.

 

I'm all in on Fields. He's my top QB in this class as far as ceiling goes.

 

I admit there is a bit more bust potential in him than Lawrence and if I was in Jacksonville's shoes I think I may go Lawrence despite the fact I think Fields COULD be a better long term QB because of that bust potential. 

 

But of the QBs in the first round of the draft this year:

Unless they turn out to be Haskins, Akili Smith, etc. Lots of very highly drafted, highly touted QB draft busts. Mark you, I think they might be worth a roll of the dice if the price is right, but the price has to be sane.

Fields will be gone at 3. Lance is a big gamble just from playing time standpoint. For me it would be to much capital to move up to get Lance. The 2021 NFL Draft quarterback prospect group certainly seems to be top heavy, but it is deeper than most people think. Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond is an underrated option at the position and his draft stock recently climbed past that of Florida signal-caller Kyle Trask.

 

Mond now has odds set at -142 to be selected first between him and Trask, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Trask has his odds set at +112 and this will be a battle to keep an eye on given both of these players are projected to be Day 2 picks in the NFL Draft.
