How do you see current society playing out? Headed towards Civil War Lite?

More than 40% of Americans think civil war likely within a decade

More than two-fifths of Americans believe civil war is at least somewhat likely in the next 10 years, according to a new survey – a figure that increases to more than half among self-identified “strong Republicans”.

Amid heated rhetoric from supporters of Donald Trump, the findings, in research by YouGov and the Economist, follow similar results in other polls.

On Sunday night, the South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham predicted “riots in the streets” if Trump is indicted over his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House, materials recovered by the FBI at Trump’s home this month.

Graham earned widespread rebuke. On Monday, Mary McCord, a former acting deputy attorney general, told CNN it was “incredibly irresponsible for an elected official to basically make veiled threats of violence, just if law enforcement and the Department of Justice … does their job”.

Saying “people are angry, they may be violent”, McCord said, showed that “what [Trump] knows and what Lindsey Graham also knows … is that people listen to that and people actually mobilise and do things.

“January 6 was the result of this same kind of tactic by President Trump and his allies.”

Russian state TV tells viewers nuclear war is likely - 'Everyone dies'

Russian state media are saying nuclear war appears to be “a given” and “everyone will be destroyed” if the West “pushes us into a corner”.

One propagandist even suggested Western countries are the nuclear aggressors, when in reality it has only been Vladimir Putin ramping up nuclear rhetoric since the onset of the Ukraine war.

Another warned “taboos” associated with nuclear attacks “could be lifted in certain circumstances” by Russia.

Even one nuke can ruin your day.  They don't all have to work.

And we can't let one nuke give a country carte blanche to do what they want.  Need to remind the people around him that we have them also.  I really think Biden needs to publicly state that nuclear war isn't one sided and unless they want all of their families to get extra crispy, they should tone down their rhetoric.

Putin’s Apocalyptic End Game in Ukraine

n September 30, following a series of sham referendums held in occupied territory in Ukraine, the Russian government declared that four Ukrainian regions were now officially part of Russia. The annexation came amid a “partial” Russian mobilization that is in fact rapidly becoming a large-scale one and that has left many Russians aghast and anxious. With these moves, the war in Ukraine has entered a new stage in which the stakes have risen drastically.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is explicitly demonstrating that he is going to do whatever it takes to win, even at the risk of undermining his own regime. Blindly believing in his own rectitude, Putin may resort to nuclear weapons if events in Ukraine continue to confound his ambitions. The key question is whether Russia’s elites and broader society are prepared to accompany their president on this journey to hell, or if Putin, in doubling down on his disastrous gamble in Ukraine, has only paved the way for his own end.

Another plank of Putin’s ultimatum is the nuclear option, which is now squarely back on the table. After cooling his rhetoric over the summer, Putin has returned to invoking this ultimate threat as a way to influence Western policy on Ukraine. In April, when Russian forces retreated from failed offensives against Kyiv and Chernihiv, the Kremlin turned to nuclear blackmail, with Putin suggesting that his government was willing to allow the use of nuclear weapons “if necessary” and effectively blaming the West for Russian failures. By May, however, that language had died down; Putin had concluded that even with Western assistance, Ukraine was doomed to lose eventually.

With the Russian military struggling, commentators and officials are once again advocating the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine. They have filled TV screens and social media with nuclear saber rattling. The pro-Kremlin segment of Telegram, a Russian information-sharing app, is buzzing with hundreds of posts justifying Moscow’s legitimate right to use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine or trying to convince the world that Putin is seriously ready to resort to nuclear weapons in the event of further escalation. The profusion of posts insisting that “Yes, he can,” “he must,” and “he will” is not only part of a deliberate campaign to intimidate the West, but also a demonstration of the growing determination among the most committed, ambitious pro-war elements of Russia’s elite and society that the war must be won no matter what.

US purchases $290 million of drug for use in radiological and nuclear emergencies

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) says it has spent $290 million on a drug to treat radiation sickness in the event of a nuclear emergency.

The HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response announced in a Tuesday release that it bought the drug Nplate from Amgen USA Inc. “as part of long-standing, ongoing efforts to be better prepared to save lives following radiological and nuclear emergencies.”

Acute Radiation Syndrome, caused by exposure to a high dose of radiation, can cause a range of symptoms. Severe cases can wreak devastating effects on the body, including destruction of bone marrow and internal bleeding, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nplate, which can be used for both adults and children, is aimed at reducing the uncontrolled bleeding often caused by radiation.

Best Place to Survive Nuclear War in the U.S.

In the wake of President Biden's mention of nuclear "armageddon", and Elon Musk tweeting that "nuclear war probability is rising rapidly," it is natural that people have pondered online what they would do, and where they would shelter, in the event of a nuclear war.

But, the safest place to go in the case of a nuclear bomb being detonated depends on where the bomb is targeted, as well as the size of the nuclear weapons, the time of year, the weather conditions, and variety of other factors, meaning the safest location will vary considerably.

Some estimates name Maine, Oregon, Northern California, and Western Texas as some of the safest locales in the case of nuclear war, due to their lack of large urban centers and nuclear power plants.

While there is no sure way to know where a nuclear bomb would be dropped, we can assume that they would initially be targeted at large and important population centers in the U.S., such as New York City or Washington D.C.

"I am of the view that a rural area which is not downwind of a obvious target is the best place if you want to avoid fallout and other effects of the bomb. A good place would be a valley where the hills would give you some protection from heat and blast from bombs which go off [miles] from where you are," Dr Mark R. StJ Foreman, an associate professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden, told Newsweek.

Growing up in DC during the Cold War, I always thought it was one of the best places to be because we'd be the first to go, instantly, painlessly, and wouldn't have to deal with the horrors of a nuclear aftermath.

The thing about that is from each other’s perspective about what America is, it is probably true.

The two sides have a completely different idea of what America is. And they are essentially polar opposites in almost every way. People like to say we agree on a lot of things, and it is just a matter of a few small differences. But that isn’t true.

Are we a democracy, or aren’t we?

We’ve always been TOLD we were, but it hasn’t been the truth. We were headed towards becoming a true democracy by the end of the Obama years, which resulted in the backlash of Trumpism in 2016 to stamp it out.

The problem is if Democrats win, they have to always keep winning.  They have to constantly fight back against the fascists the GOP have become.  Every election is crucial.  It’s a constant, uphill battle against misinformation and authoritarianism.

If Republicans ever get all three branches again, it’s over.  The dream of Democracy will be dead.  They’ll pass laws for their entire agenda, gut voting rights, and overthrow elections as they see fit to keep power.  Even presidential term limits are likely to be ignored.

They're both right.

The GOP is at best an authoritarian theocratic oligarchy.
At worst it's a fascist dictatorship.

And since they have been told the entire time they are protecting us from the left, which they have been told is the problem with everything, they will prefer to destroy this country because they believe the propaganda.

Lol.

The premise is so dumb.  I am less convinced there will be "civil war" than ever.  We have turned Democracy into "civil war".

I don't think the GOP want to destroy the country.  They want the wheel.  And I think it sucks when they are behind the wheel. Democrats are the same and a lot of folks who I disagree with think it sucks when Democrats have the wheel.

The 80% are juat starting to get politically empowered... we can see a huge shift 20 years from now.  I hope we all come together and say "the rich are screwing the middle class and poor."  Politics still follows 20th century for the most part... but tech has the potential to leverage more for the little guy.

With all that being said... I just have been listening to the 1992 Presidential debate with Perot, Clinton and Bush... they are talking about the same stuff... although much less on race...

1992? Give Harry Truman's speech from the 1948 Democratic convention a listen some time. It's pretty much a laundry list of the same issues we face today.

I'm not dumb enough to believe anyone who claims to KNOW what is coming.  Sorry if you thought I was.  But they do make compelling arguments.

So basically a Day of the Rope scenario is how a modern civil war plays out in America?
