Is that definitely what's on his jacket in his profile pic?

Yup.South Africa flag during apartheid:

Rhodesia flag prior to independence from UK and country becoming Zimbabwe:

All he's missing is the Confederate flag and a swastika.

Reuters reports that the uncle of the 21-year-old suspect was given a gun for his birthday, a .45-caliber pistol. The uncle, Carson Cowles, came forward when he recognized the photo police distributed and described his nephew as "quiet and soft-spoken."

As written, I think that's a mistake.  Local newspapers are reporting that the suspect - not the uncle - got the gun for his birthday.

arrested in March......given a gun on his 21st birthday in April.

Lexington County, S.C. court records show Roof was arrested on March 2 on criminal possession of a controlled substance. The records indicate it may be a first offense. The case is pending. He was also jailed on April 26 on a trespassing charge.

The suspect's uncle, Carson Cowles, 56, tells Reuters that he recognized the young man in the surveillance photo as his nephew.

"The more I look at him, the more I'm convinced, that's him," Carson Cowles, 56, tells Reuters in a phone interview.

Cowles said Roof was given a gun by his father as a 21st birthday present in April.

All you Gun Grabbers want the Government to be telling parents what they can't give their children, for their birthdays!

What's next?  Y'all gonna pass a law that says it's illegal to buy a kid a hooker for his 16th?

I think they mean that the uncle reports that the 21 year-old suspect was given a gun for his birthday. The way this is written makes it seem like the uncle got a gun...

Look at the rapid descent into darkness shown in these three photos of the suspect:

that is right at the age where Schizophrenia usually kicks in (end of adolescence, when the the brain is finishing maturing)... all of the bemoaning of antidepressants in this thread, it may well turn out that some antipsychotic medications could've really been helpful here.    Drugs aren't our enemy, people.. they are tools, and tools that in some instances can do wonderfully positive things.
