RFKFedEx
Those have been gone since the 90s. You really need to pay closer attention. It hasn't been that long. The feathers disappeared sometime during the Shanny years. The half body sized headdresses gradually shrunk down over the decades, before they were totally gone. They were still pretty big in the 80s.

autoidiodyssey
I've been listening to Cleveland sports talk this morning, enjoying their distress over Johnny Football, and they mentioned in an update that both Phil Simms and Tony Dungy have come out and said they will not use the name. I think this was mentioned before but I guess there was an official press release.

RonArtest15
And if anyone cares, I'm picking March 17, 2015 as the date that I'll choose to be offended by the name. Until then, HTTR!

CrypticVillain
So, Tony Dungy wouldn't draft a gay player, but has a problem saying "Redskins?" Huh? I thought Tony Dungy was a stand, but he lost cool points from me this year with me on both of those topics. If a gay dude wants to play football, and he fits on your team, and he's available you better draft him. By not, your showing that you are selfish. As far as the Redskins thing, he just felled in the trap most people fell in. Too dumb to hear and respect the facts*. *Notice I said facts, and not opinions. Zazzaro703
Thank you Mike Ditka for saying what the majority of us think but cannot say in fear of being unfairly labeled by the far left PC people that have become the bane of our society. When the actual people that matter have been talked to about the issue and an vast majority of them have no problem with the name, this on going discussion has become assinine. This is America, we do not change things because 10-15% of a given population has a problem with something. The majority has always ruled and in this case its a huge majority. Costas and Dungy should be fired from their jobs. They get paid better than probably 85% of the country to sit around and talk football with an unbiased opinion. If they want to add their personal bias into their job, which is covering the NFL and its 32 teams fairly, guess what... They can go find another job. I hope when Sunday Night Football is up for grabs again the NFl takes their business elsewhere.

zoony
I'm not sure anyone has ever argued that the fans of the team are racist. Also, the "What gives them the right to force their beliefs on anyone else" argument is truly the last refuge of a scoundrel. You can make that argument about anything. From gay marriage to flouride in drinking water to HOA rules about the color of your front door. Part of the social compact is that occasionally, you are going to have to tailor your behavior for the sake of others. And sometimes you are going to find that annoying or unncessary. . Curious your thoughts on Prohibition, I'm wondering if you feel that those opposed to Prohibition were scoundrelsThere were very, very, very good reasons presented for the banning of alcohol in this country. Namely that alcohol is a leading cause of death, family destruction, and emotional distress. Not that it was simply "offensive". Therefore, the argument to ban alcohol is clearly a better one than to ban the term Redskins. This cannot be argued, period. And of course, the only argument FOR alcohol was that many liked it. That's it. Similar to the arguments for the Redskins name

SoulSkin
Ding Ding Ding. Check who owns pft and who their main sponsors are. As well as Rotoworld, where everyone goes to get fantasy football tips and tidbits of moral authority from wise sages such as Patrick Daughtery. For that matter, the whole little subculture of fantasy football writers are mostly in lockstep on the topic. It's died down recently but, for a while, that community almost all had a little party going on on twitter pounding how offensive the name is and berating anyone who disagreed. Besides Daughtery, I know Chet Gresham (The Fake Football) and RumfordJohnny (2Mugs) were big self-aggrandizing people trying to tout their own high intelligence and moral superiority on a daily basis. There's a bunch more, but I don't feel like going back and figuring them all out. I do sometimes wonder what goes on behind the scenes with NBC and Comcast SportsNet (Mid-Atlantic specifically) about this topic.

Commander PK
It hasn't been that long. The feathers disappeared sometime during the Shanny years. The half body sized headdresses gradually shrunk down over the decades, before they were totally gone. They were still pretty big in the 80s. From my conversations with a Native American on Facebook who is against the name...he has a big problem with the headdresses the fans wear. I think he has a bigger problem with that than he does the name itself. I told him like 1% of the fans wear headdresses, and the band doesn't wear them anymore. I said if that was really bothering Natives I could see stopping that. Could be a thing just understood among the fans...don't wear Native headdresses to the games,..unless you are a Native of course. Simple thing. I've seen the headdress wearing equated to people mocking formal symbols of pride and honor from our military, like medals. Here's a brief explanation: http://www.indians.org/articles/indian-headdress.html Edit: I'm just posting this stuff here in case anybody wants to know the 'why' of it's inappropriateness and/or offensiveness to many, but hasn't really looked it up. http://apihtawikosisan.com/hall-of-shame/an-open-letter-to-non-natives-in-headdresses/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gyasi-/pharell-williams-headdresses_b_5449926.html
