Brandon Banks: Clash Time--Should He Stay or Should He Go? (MET)

I don't understand how you can draw this conclusion on Banks. He had 1 punt return he was able to field today' date=' and there was nothing there. He is neutralized on K/Os because kickers won't even take a chance. They clear it to the back of the endzone.

And as for the pistol formation, his mere presence freezes the defense and opens up lanes for the run/pass/draw option[/quote']

It's not just one game, it's a 6 game sample size. If kickers can neutralize him on kick offs and he isn't getting opportunities in the punt return game what is the point of keeping any kick return specialist?

That being said I'm in favor of holding onto him unless we need a roster spot down the line. He has been worthless on special teams which is suppose to be his niche but he does add something on offense. I don't think its worthy of a roster spot but going into week 7 I'm not sure who is out there that could help our team more.

I know I am stretching it a bit but it seems to me Banks either fumbles or gets the ball knocked out every other time he touches the pig skin. There is no value with this guy, time to sell.

11 career fumbles with 10 fumble recoveries. Pretty lucky. It is only a matter of time before those start going the other way. He also has two games this year where he has negative punt return yardage. If we got points for running sideline to sideline, we might be undefeated.

He needs to go. Next preseason, if we are desperate for a win, maybe we can pick him up so that we can get a punt return.

I think he may be able to hang on the rest of this season, as long as there are no major mishaps, but unless he does something very impressive, I wouldn't be surprised if he's gone next season

sometimes you just have to supply more than potential to remain on the 53

While I have similar thoughts I would say his propensity to fumble the ball should fall under the category of major mishaps. Whether we lose the ball on that fumble or not shouldn't be relevant in evaluating Brandon Banks. His contribution to the play is the same regardless. I've never seen a player put the ball on the ground as often as Banks does. It amazes me that he manages to get away with it.

I love BB.. That said, the touch backs are nullifying his upside, and I honestly hold my breath twice during every punt.. Will he catch it, and will he hang onto it once he gets going.. Plus, if he did break one, you just know it'll be called back for an illegal block or holding, etc.. If there's someone out there Shanny needs/wants on the roster, I think it's probably time..

His value in the backfield with Morris and RG3 is strong....even though hes not making plays the guy is a threat when he's on the field, period.

He's a complete waste of a roster spot. He's not a threat to anyone, and nobody respects his non-existent ability to make a play. He's worthless, and I'd love to cut him and pick up any sort of lineman, offense or defense.

Anyway, Banks led the league in kickoff returns last year. It's unfortunate that the NFL has neutered kickoffs or he'd be more valuable. As is he isn't really adding much and is in the "cuttable" bottom of the roster.

And that is precisely why he should be cut. Why keep a guy around that has been rendered ineffective by the leagues stupid kickoff format. Anybody can stand in the endzone and let the ball go over their head.

His value in the pistol is not "strong" as others seem to be taking for granted. IMO, he could be replaced mid-season by Moss. The only value Banks has over Moss is that Banks has proven that he can make plays throwing the football at this level, which is something the defense has to account for. However, this benefit is diminished by the fact that Banks is virtually zero threat to go out and run a route in the passing game.

In my opinion, the coaches should strongly consider moving Moss into Banks' spot on option plays, and line Robinson up in the slot on those plays. Next year, when Helu returns, I would put Helu and Morris in the backfield for option plays. Helu can block better than Banks, is an actual threat in the passing game, and is a more effective runner than Banks (unless Banks somehow returns to his fearless ways from 2010).

Banks will burn someone....maybe it will be in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day? Having a reliable punt returner who catches the ball and makes good decisions is really important. I'm confident that he'll break one or two this year. I'm also confident that he'll make something happen on offense if they keep giving him a chance. Speed kills and Banks has it. Just a matter of time.....

That in and of itself makes him expendable. If he gets 1 or 2 to return a game, he's lucky. And then he usually doesn't do anything with it. He's 29th in PR avg.

When healthy, Helu has good enough speed to make those pistol plays effective. Next year, if they wanna keep doing that, I'd go with him.

Dude c'mon this is a bad thread. Not all thoughts should be threads or even said aloud. I'd say this falls into that category.

Used to be a big banks fan, still believe he can and will make a serious impact this season

man, you are off the mark here ... I think about this every game. He's had 6 games to make somehtign happen, that is a lot. I really think he's wasting a roster spot. Skins return game is decent statistically but BB brings nothing else to the table ... not really sure how effective those plays with him in the backfield are ... don't really see a lot of production out of them.

Will a spot have to be opened up for Brown if/when he comes back.

Spinning this forward, are you willing to pull the plug on Banks after the season if he doesn't "break one or two" and continues to provide nothing dynamic on offense?

I don't want to sound disrespectul, but have you been watching?

Banks just had his fourth fumble of the year yesterday.

Last year he had 7.

he does NOT catch the ball.

He actually does the opposite. he muffs it. He fumbles it. He lays it on the ground...11 times in the last 22 games.

He is not a reliable punt returner.

If he gets a block he can pop one, but so can a hundred guys who get a block.

I would bet you a beer that he does burn someone, and it's us with a costly turnover.

i dont think his output or potential output at that is worth a roster spot. he cant do anything unless he has a 10 foot cushion around him. in the open field, hes lights out. but how often can we create huge wholes on punt/kickoff coverage? or fool the defense so bad on a reverse hes got half the field to himself? just not worth it in my opinion.
