JMS Posted February 19, 2013 Share Posted February 19, 2013 I just saw "Zero Dark Thirty" about the pursuit of Bin Laudin.. It's definitely worth going. Supprisingly enough it's kind of a chicks movie as the main pursurer in the CIA of Bin Laudin seems to have been a woman CIA officer who used her own time and stood up against her bosses at several junctures to both gain the assets to find him and to exploit the information she had uncovered. Almost every man in this movie at one time or another works counter to this womans single minded pursuit of Bin Laudin.. Even people who she is allied against and who she clearly respects ultimately throw her under the bus here. It was a very interesting for it's treatment on what goes on behind the scenes.. There are some pretty glaring falsehoods in the movie based upon other sources; but given the still classified event was less than a year.removed from the origins of this film it's amaizing how much of the story they are able to tell . I also sar Flight with Denzel Washington, which was well done, but unfulfilling, I mean hey Denzel Washington right.. only kind of disappointing, It's a soft pedeled "Leaving LasVeges" type movie with good acting but ultimately left me asking why I bothered. ... Hyde Park on the Hudson"... Great Great movie... next to Lincoln my favorite of the year.. It's another one of Bill Murry's "Razor's Edge" tyhpe performances... One of the best movies ever made which nobody is going to see. Saw Argo... very good. Maybe my third favorite movie of the year. It's become a completely different genre from horror: "Torture porn".I wouldn't put TCM in that category though. It's disgusting, but the movie is more scary and suspenseful than it is gory. I totally agree. I don't actually watch too many horror films anymore for that reason. I remember when Hostel came out a few years back and heard people going into detail about it, and I'm like "You know what? That has absolutely no appeal to me". This was also around the same time when Al Quada in Iraq were on their head cutting binge (which was available on the internet for anyone who cared to watch) so I don't know if reality upped the ante or what, but pop culture has definitely become more brutal in the last 10 years. True horror has gotten lost in America, I would say. Brutal slashers, or "Torture porn" movies as Botched put it, don't move the meter for me either. A truly scary movie could be PG-13 and make me think twice about turning the lights out. There is some shock value involved in some movies like that for people, but it just doesn't hold a candle to all of the elements that make a great horror film. One thing that was really nice was the sound. Saw it in a big theatre at Tysons and it sounded great. The planes, explosions, everything...awesome. I think there are just two different types of horror movies. The ones like the Hitcher or the Thing or even Jaws, that make you think twice and give you chills and then the gore flicks, like what yall are discussing. Chew Posted February 22, 2013 Share Posted February 22, 2013 just watched Life f Pi. decent movie, but i felt unfulfilled...especially with all the attention and acclaim this film has been getting. but then i trolled the internets for answers and explanations...and i am now VERY satisfied. religion, cannibalism, starvation, love, desperation, acceptance....after an hour of reading theories and opinions on the internet about Life of Pi....my opinion of this movie has gone from "okay" to "blown away." god DAMN it was a good flick. I really enjoyed the actual flight. An airline pilot saves a flight from crashing, but an investigation into the malfunctions reveals something troubling. I thought it was great, and I don't even like scary movies. I just hate feeling uncomfortable, which this movie still has me feeling while I type this. Still a very cool movie, imo. Or the decomposing corpse in the bed? That movie is ****** up. They really don't make movies like that (or 12 Monkeys or Jacob's Ladder) hardly anymore because most viewers want cheap easy to understand instant gratification. It's probably why reality shows are king and shows like Lost are once in a generation. HAHA! No lie, I did the same thing! I just sat there thinking, WTF did I just watch? But in a good way, if that makes any sense...I literally spent like the next week reading reviews and theories about it. The best though was trying to explain the movie to one of my buddies a few days later. The look on his face was great LOL. I finally watched this movie ( Mulholland Dr.) a couple nights ago. Yeah, that was a masterpiece. And I definitely had to rewind that sex scene . I was sort of like 'Wtf" toward the middle portion of the movie, but things started to make a little sense once they went to that "Silencio" place. By the end, even though some things didn't quite make sense ( like the homeless guy/girl, the director, the cowboy, etc) you pretty much knew that she was living the life she first envisioned before coming to Hollywood, then everything started to get a little clearer. It damn near went 15 rounds in Mulhollad Dr. . And that Billy Ray Cyrus scene was funny as ****, even funnier the second time when he got dropped by the mob enforcer. I pumped my fist afterward. How dare that ***** ask my man what he's doing in his own house in the middle of the day, with dude in bed with her, then having the dude crush him in the kitchen after he dumps the paint in her jewelry box. Worth a rent not a buy imo. Thought it was really good. Have seen it a million times still love it. Really liked the story but way too far fetched for me. Most of all, the movie has a great heart. John Reilly and Sara Silverstone did a great job bringing that out of the two main characters. I've heard nothing but great things about this flick, and it didn't disappoint. Starring Kiefer Sutherland, William Hurt, Jennifer Connelly, and Rufus Sewell. Its a very dark scy-fi thriller, dealing with mind control, telepathy, aliens, and free will. Very neat movie, and its getting an 80% on rotten which is pretty good. Glad I finally caught it on Showtime the other day. THis might be the most depressing movie I've seen in the last few months (I watch a lot of movies). Cage killed this film, no wonder he won an Oscar for it. THis was Nicolas Cage's best movie of his career, IMO. I can't believe I've never seen this movie before. Elizabeth Shue was so god damn hot.
