I finally watched "Beasts of the Southern Wild" last night. It had been sitting on my shelf for a week after arriving from Netflix. Left me crying like a baby.

One of the best movies I've seen all year. I didn't cry at the end, because I'm a manly man. Something did get caught in my eye though. ;):ols:

The acting, the scenery, the story....wow. Just wow. No wonder it got nominated for 4 Oscars.

Honestly, I get caught up in movies like this more and more since I became a father.

Watched Paranormal Activity 4 last night.

These went down hill after the 2nd one. The suspense was good, but didn't deliver that "OMG!" scary moment. Should have left it an independent film, hollywood has ruined the premise.

On the good side, the usage of an xbox 360 kinect has me intrigued. I'm a paranormal investigator, when I have time, and I may have to try this.

I'm at work so images don't really work - here's the movie's link : www.paranormalmovie.com/

I swear my wife was in the other room cutting onions :ols:

Oh wow, watching that movie as a father...I can definitely see how it got to you. I thoroughly enjoyed that film. It was amazing.

I thought PA3 was the second best of the series. 4 was disappointing to say the least.

Skyfall - ehh, i thought it was pretty good, but not OH MY GOD. The hype surrounding this movie was off the charts, with some folks saying "this is the best Bond film since Goldfinger." That's quite a statement, and I watched Skyfall having high expectations for it. This was my favorite Daniel Craig Bond movie of the 3, and it was good, but not blow your socks off good. Naomie Harris is hawt. B+

End of Watch - This movie was pretty intense. a bit far fetched, as most police officers, even the ghetto gunfighters, don't draw their weapons daily. still, damn good movie. A-

Battleship - Meh, it's exactly what I expected. a cheesy story, with bad acting, Rihanna looking hot, and Liam Neeson not doing much at all. Cool action scenes though. You can actually enjoy bad movies like this if you just watch it for what it is. D+.

Mama - wasn't THAT bad, but it wasn't anything worth ever watching again. typical low budget horror flick, spinoff of every other cheesy horror joint that's come out the last 10 years. But Jessica Chastian's blue eyes and great acting saved this movie. (this film was SO below her, surprised she took the job) C+

Silver Lining - i thought it was a damn good movie. We've seen Bradley Cooper be funny, and we saw him kick ass in Limitless, and apparently he's also good at being serious. A+.

Flight - This movie really, really affected me. I've struggled with alcohol addiction for nearly 5 years now, and watching Denzel fight the urge to drink the entire movie reminded me so much of my own struggles, I was in tears half the time LOL. Awesome job by Denzel, and maybe I was just caught up in my emotions, but I feel that Flight was one of his best performances since Training Day. and John Goodman was ****ing hilarious! A.

Yep, I absolutely loved Beasts. So powerful. It deserves all the accolades its getting, I was very impressed.

I finally got around to seeing Flight too. Best Denzel movie I've seen in a long time. It was really good.

Last Friday Night: Double Feature

At the Theatre: Identity Thief (2013) A hapless Denver based white collar type falls prey to a sociopathic, ID thieving cyber bandit from Florida. When the cops come after him and he loses his job as a result of the investigation, he travels to Florida to attempt to collar her and bring her back. Hijinks follow.....

It was ok... typical road trip movie between two polar opposites who form a bond. Had some awkwardly funny moments, but I'm glad I caught it early enough for Matinee rates.

After dinner, we got home and hit up VUDU and watched Dead Silence (2007). This ones about an old childhood urban legend come to life in the form of a ghost of an old woman ventriloquist taken out by a vigilante mob who gets revenge through her dummys. The dummys are the stars here and are even creepier than normal. The "gore" itself harkens back to a simpler time and it was nice to be creeped out without being psychologically damaged. I liked it.

Skyfall!!

Loved the plot!! Wished there was more fighting and things blowing up!! :ols:

yeah, I really liked it myself.

Last night I showed my 16 year old "Reservoir Dogs".

he was appropriately impressed.

I told him ,the beauty of this movie is very little of it is actually shown. In terms of action to set up the story, almost all of it is done through dialogue.

Some really great performances in that movie.

Just finished watching "The Impossible" with Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts. It's a film about the Tsunami in Indonesia in 2004 and the 7 days afterwards. Very much a "feel good" movie, you see the kindness of strangers and mankind in general all through this film.

One of Naomi Watts' best performances ever, even better than Mulholland Drive.

Girlfriend got me to watch "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (2012) with her last night. In it's most basic/generic synopsis it's about a highschool freshmen trying to find his identity in life. Emma Watson was really good in it. For a movie I had no interest in going into watching I definitely found it a very good movie and came away somewhat "touched" by it.

An average American man has a total breakdown and goes on a killing spree, taking out what he believes are the dregs of society: reality TV stars, Westboro church types, cable news pundits, etc. A teenage girl witnesses his first murder and joins him. The whole movie is essentially a rant about modern society. It's really funny, and satisfying in a morbid sort of way.

Camp 14: Total Control Zone. A very depressing, but informative documentary about North Korean labor camps.

This dude who was born in a labor camp near Pyongyang talked about his 20+ years there....to include being torturd with water, fire, watching an 8-year old girl beaten to death, and gettting a front row seat at the public execution of his mother and.brother. probably the best N. Korea doc ive ever seen.

I read the book Escape from Camp 14. I didn't even know there was a doc. Gonna have to check it out.

Life doesn't always go according to plan. Pat Solitano has lost everything - his house, his job, and his wife. He now finds himself living back with his mother and father after spending eight months in a state institution on a plea bargain. Pat is determined to rebuild his life, remain positive and reunite with his wife, despite the challenging circumstances of their separation. All Pat's parents want is for him to get back on his feet. When Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own, things get complicated. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he'll do something very important for her in return. As their deal plays out, an unexpected bond begins to form between them.

My thoughts: Boring. I really wanted to see this. In fact, I dragged my wife. I like movies along these lines, but this one just didn't do it for me. I wanted to leave after about a 1/2 hour. I guess I wasn't expecting so much screaming and dysfunction. Maybe I should have. Well, at least I got to look at Jennifer Lawrence for a couple of hours. She was hot in the dance scene.

Not a great movie, but definitely entertaining. I think I was expecting too much. I heard Bobcat Goldthwait interviews, and I thought it was going to be terrific. I built it up too much..

I wanted to comment on your post. I agree that the degree of gore has gotten out of hand. I've never been a big horror/slasher movie buff, but what separates gore from the past until now is, no longer do you just have a killer on the loose, stabbing, slashing and killing people. These new movies have started to take on a Texas Chainsaw Massacre sort of way, by capturing and psychologically torturing people in the most god awful way. It's gotten to the level of, "how far can I go to show human pain and suffering." I just don't get into that. Movies like Saw and some of those others. Watching older slasher movies had you on the edge of your seat, not knowing when the killer would "jump" out and scare you. Now, you see the killer and you watch him disembowel a person or chop them up limb by limb while they are awake. Not for me.

I don't like those movies either, there are no redeeming qualities to watching them. Most of them aren't even scary. It's become a completely different genre from horror: "Torture porn".

I wouldn't put TCM in that category though. It's disgusting, but the movie is more scary and suspenseful than it is gory.

I totally agree. I don't actually watch too many horror films anymore for that reason. I remember when Hostel came out a few years back and heard people going into detail about it, and I'm like "You know what? That has absolutely no appeal to me". This was also around the same time when Al Quada in Iraq were on their head cutting binge (which was available on the internet for anyone who cared to watch) so I don't know if reality upped the ante or what, but pop culture has definitely become more brutal in the last 10 years.

Just finished watching the documentary Queen of Versailles.

It's about David Siegel and his wife they set out to build the largest SFH in America modeled after Louis XIV's palace, Versailles. He built his empire on time shares and after 2008 basically busted the business (more so because of stubborness . . . cutting off your nose to spite your face kinda deal). When you're building the largest single family home and you have $50 million of uncut marble sitting on your property, is there really an excuse not to have any money to send all 8 of your kids to college without having to take out student loans?
