mardi gras skin
difficult for Japan. It actually sits in the middle of three fault lines, basically surrounded. Yep. But we have plenty of room for nuclear power plants in more geologically stable areas. There is no reason at all for us to halt the building of new nuclear power plants in the States because of what's happening in Japan.

Its interesting to note that they were still 60km away from the reactor when police stopped them. I have seen some sketchy stories thatthe BBC have ran, but not followed up, that caesium has been detected which the Japanes nuclear power people say could be an indication of the beginning of a reactor meltdown. No one really running with this story yet though.
aREDSKIN
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12720219 (Video of explosion here) A huge pall of smoke was seen coming from the plant at Fukushima and several workers were injured. Japanese officials fear a meltdown at one of the plant's reactors after radioactive material was detected outside it. A huge relief operation is under way after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and tsunami, which killed more than 600. Hundreds more people are missing and it is feared about 1,300 may have died. The offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami which wreaked havoc on Japan's north-east coast, sweeping far inland and devastating a number of towns and villages. Have people actually proposed building nuclear power plants in the United States along earthquake fault zones? If so, I agree with you. We shouldn't build them there. Teller
(CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis."At this point' date=' we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).[/quote'] Good Lord. Sticksboi05
This was hundreds of times stronger than the Haiti earthquake. Destino
This was hundreds of times stronger than the Haiti earthquake. Thank God Japan is as prepared as any nation for this stuff or this could've been 2004 over again. The location of the epicenter and the depth of the quake are just as important. Consider this, Haiti's 7.0 quake was just 15 miles from Port-au Prince and just 8.1 miles deep. Japan's was off the coast and 80 miles from the closest major population center. It occurred at a depth of 15.2 miles. The situations are entirely different and Japan's biggest concern is the wall of water it created. As far as earthquakes themselves an on target quake at shallow depth is the nightmare scenario. Nuclear power is generally safe. There was only one Chernobyl and it was preventable. Building them along fault lines however, well, that's just kind of questionable.A building housing a reactor just exploded in Japan. A powerful explosion has hit a nuclear power station in north-eastern Japan which was badly damaged in Friday's devastating earthquake.A building housing a reactor was destroyed, but the authorities said the reactor itself was intact inside its steel container. The Japanese government has sought to play down fears of a meltdown at the Fukushima plant. It says radiation levels around the stricken plant have now fallen. A huge rescue and relief operation is under way in the region after the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which are thought to have killed more than 1,000 people. Tokyo Electric Power said four of its workers had been injured in Saturday's blast at Fukushima, 250km (155 miles) north of Tokyo, but that their injuries were not life-threatening. An evacuation zone around the damaged nuclear plant has been extended to 20km (12.4 miles) from 10km, and a state of emergency declared. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2011/03/11/exp.ac.gaherty.compares.quake.cnn?hpt=T1
