8.9 magnitude quake hits Japan...edit: 6.5 quake hits (3/27)

I am shocked at the orderly way their population appears to be reacting. A huge earthquake, after shocks, a tsunami, and now a nuclear reactor incidident would seem a huge test for any society. I think it's a huge testiment to the character of Japan to see more stories of the best humanity than the least of society. I think disasters bring out both in a society, and it says a lot to see mostly positive stories.

I'm not. The times I was over there had me full of envy because its a fact that there is no way in Hades that today's USA could come close to their character and discipline.

My whole point about nukes was just that it's not an investment into future energy and will never be fully stable, that's all. Problems happen, that's life. If the things that can go wrong with a nuclear plant, do go wrong, the effects are irreversible and the harm far outweighs the good.

True I guess in countries that suck when it comes to standards which was old Russia. A Nuke power plant in the USA on the east coast has a very miniscule chance of experiencing a 9.0 earthquake and a Tsunami. anytime soon.

The China Syndrome fears were predictable though my fear would be places like NYC and Jersey becoming Damnation Alley after a meltdown. can you imagine the armor plated flesh eating ****Roaches and bedbugs?

I just saw this video of the tsunami. 6 minutes from dry to destroyed. This video is just incredible. Words can't do it justice.

I must have watched this video 4 or 5 times already. They just showed it on tv for the first time a few mins ago on CNN too.

Most of my friends that live in Tokyo are now getting mentality stressed out a lot of them left today to either go to Osaka, Thailand or where they are originally from just to get out for a week or so. I'll add, these are my non japanese friends that are leaving, all my japanese friends are staying strong.

That video just takes your breath away. It's insane. 6 minutes! If you were in your home, you'd have no chance.

I had trouble being stressed out this past week, because of a potential flood. I can't imagine what being in Japan right now would be like.

That's the one I just posted. It takes your breath away. I've watched it a few times now. I've lived through about 5 major floods and I have never come close to seeing anything close to that.

Sorry dude, completely missed it. Yeah i've watched it a few times also and I cannot imagine being there. Let alone having a couple of minutes to get to higher ground before it reaches you.

If even a couple minutes. By the time you see the water coming in, it's already on you and at two feet it's powerful enough to take you down.

And no worries about double posting it. I think everybody should see that video. It's amazing.

Japan’s earthquake shifted balance of the planet

Last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan has actually moved the island closer to the United States and shifted the planet's axis.

The quake caused a rift 15 miles below the sea floor that stretched 186 miles long and 93 miles wide, according to the AP. The areas closest to the epicenter of the quake jumped a full 13 feet closer to the United States, geophysicist Ross Stein at the United States Geological Survey told The New York Times.

The world's fifth-largest, 8.9 magnitude quake was caused when the Pacific tectonic plate dove under the North American plate, which shifted Eastern Japan towards North America by about 13 feet (see NASA's before and after photos at right). The quake also shifted the earth's axis by 6.5 inches, shortened the day by 1.6 microseconds, and sank Japan downward by about two feet. As Japan's eastern coastline sunk, the tsunami's waves rolled in.

Why did the quake shorten the day? The earth's mass shifted towards the center, spurring the planet to spin a bit faster. Last year's massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile also shortened the day, but by an even smaller fraction of a second. The 2004 Sumatra quake knocked a whopping 6.8 micro-seconds off the day.

After the country's 1995 earthquake, Japan placed high-tech sensors around the country to observe even the slightest movements, which is why scientists are able to calculate the quake's impact down to the inch. "This is overwhelmingly the best-recorded great earthquake ever," Lucy Jones, chief scientist for the Multi-Hazards project at the U.S. Geological Survey, told The Los Angeles Times.

The tsunami's waves necessitated life-saving evacuations as far away as Chile. Fisherman off the coast of Mexico reported a banner fishing day Friday, and speculated that the tsunami knocked sealife in their direction.
