DeanCollins
Man, three pages and no one mentions Dio? Ronnie James Dio is the man and even in his 60s he's still nailing it. can you said "thread fail"? :pfft: Not having Paul Rodgers in the initial list. How about Lou Gramm of Foreigner? Sticksboi05
Oh, damnit this is rock only, I was going to say Otis Redding.
DeanCollins
He's got the best combination of strength and tone of anyone, ever. He can overpower 2 guitars, a bass, and drums... but he's silky smooth and his pocket and control are perfect.you put him on a stage with freddie or robert plant and you'd only hear Eddie .... technically, Veder is a terrible singer ala Neil Young. LApunkrocker72
My best list would include Paul McCartney, Chris Cornell, and Robert Plant. My favorites list would include Joe Strummer, John Doe, Keith Morris and Greg Graffin.
drtdrums
Gonna go Maynard James Keenan hands down. Chris Cornell comes in second for me. Myles Kennedy is actually up there. I don't dig Layne at all for some reason...never did. From there, I go really obscure. Ian Kenny is awesome. Jared Leto is pretty amazing at times. dockeryfan
People hating on Robert Plant really need to listen to the recent album he did with Alison Kraus
thebluefood
Freddie Mercury from Queen and that's by a long shot. Not only did he have a big arena rock voice, he could also sing like an angel.
Metalhead
Hmm, no love for Devin Townsend? He's the best I've heard from at least 1996 to the present. Old Chris Cornell is very good, his latter Audioslave sound is abysmal though. I really don't understand putting Eddie Vedder ahead of so many greats either. Anyway, here's some of Devin: Strapping Young Lad - Almost Again And for me, the best since the 70's is Freddie Mercury and it's not even close. Tarpon75
.... and Paul Rogers, on vocals!!!!He was the one I was going to mention.I know Mick Jagger's voice isn't the greatest but he probably he's the ultimate frontman.

d0ublestr0ker0ll
I'll go with Plant. Personally, it's more fun to sing like him than anybody else. So much intensity and sexuality within the style.
Tarpon75
holy hell I can't believe so many people are saying Robert Plant. Plant, IMO, is probably the worst singer in the history of rock (that was part of a big-time band). He sounds like a 12 year old eunuch. Terrible, terrible, terrible voice. Just awful. The correct answer to the OP is Eddie Vedder and its not close watch him with tom petty (esp from the 4:00 mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK7Bks4XbD4 I have to agree with you about Plant. The success of Zepplin to me was more about the overall sound of the band. thehogs
I have to agree with you about Plant. The success of Zepplin to me was more about the overall sound of the band. agreed, I rarely came away from a Zep song thinking what amazing vocals, more like the titanic drumming and guitar playing. Around the same time period though, Ian Gillan in Purple on the other hand would - back in 70/73 - wipe the floor with Robert Plant. (Of course, Gillan was in a band that had a guitar player that could rip the crap out of Page but thats for another thread another time....) Spaceman Spiff
I can understand not thinking Plant was all that but...awful? And saying Eddie Vedder is better? Wow.
GSF
To say best "vocalist" implies talent, tone, and technical ability. In that context it's Freddie Mercury and then Steve Perry by a longshot. If you want to say best rock singer or front man, which kind of implies emotion and presence, then you bring guys like Plant, Daltry, Vedder, and Cornell in to the mix. I love all of those guys, but to me Mercury was the greatest of all time.
