How are you all able to be on ES all day during work?

I work in a medical clinic. We have computers everywhere b/c things are going electronic before too long. I'm not on here "all day". I pop in from time to time when it's slow around the clinic. My boss doesn't like it..but she's rarely around. I try to camiflauge it the best I can...keeping the screen small and keeping some kind of program running behind it so I can just click on it if she walks in. She leaves at 5pm..so after that I get on for the duration of my shift. We're usually really really slow after 5. I leave for the day at 6:30p. So what else is there to do..

I have my own office. A boss of two departments. Our company policy cleary says we are allowed to use the internet for personal use, as long as it doesn't interfere w/ our job. I have a lot of responsibility, but not a lot of specific daily tasks. So I find myself on here sporadically throughout the day. I have it pretty good I think.

Well, when you are sitting at a server, just doing monitoring, and nothing is going on...yeah, ES helps to pass the time.
Yep.

I'm a Network Admin for a medium size aerospace company.

I have 10 racks of servers and disk arrays, my boss is never in, and I manage our internet filter application and firewalls.

My stuff rarely breaks, hence I have plenty of time for ES during the day. :D

I forgot to mention in my earlier post that we have Websense at work, but it still lets me through if I hit continue. Is Websense more of a scare tactic? I've being getting past Websense for awhile now and haven't had a visit from anyone escorting me to the door.

Why do I feel like I just owned myself and my keystrokes have been recorded. :paranoid:

I’m an employee not a slave. I refuse to work for any employer that cares that I listen to Internet radio all day or that I surf the Web during down time. There is natural down time at any job. I don’t see what’s wrong with reading articles or forums at work as long as I’m productive and get all my work done. Not to mention it kills the monotony of any given day. I also work for a small business so it’s not the same as working for some huge 200 employee company that hands out novel thick books of employee guidelines. The only thing I can’t do is AIM which is considered a security risk.
Streaming video and radio are bandwidth hogs. That's why companies generally block them. :2cents:

I use Websense at work. They just haven't ratcheted it down yet.

And yes it logs everything into a SQL server database. They may be gathering data on your habits for future action.

Or they might not be looking at logs at all. ;)

Thanks for the info. Well the guy I work with has being getting past websense to use ebay for the last year and he is still here. So hopefully the logs aren't being looked at. :paranoid:

You're fine probably. If they ever do tighten it down, just use vtunnel.com. It won't run javascripts though.

Couple reasons. I mostly work nights and I'm a police dispatcher so as long as no one is committing a crime, I don't have anything to do. Also, when I'm in class I really don't pay attention so I goof off on here (and still make the Dean's List)

It all depends on company policy. As Zguy stated, websense sits at the gateway and logs all traffic to a SQL database. We are talking about massive amounts of log entries and most companies won't monitor the logs. They do save the logs for liability reasons. Also, HR can request logs pulled. However, if logs aren't monitored, no Internet usage quota defined, there isn't much they can do. They can say you are using too much Internet but too much compared to what? They don't set a standard. Most of these log checks come about from overtime abuse questions. Poor production metrics can also trigger a log check.

Mostly, it's a liability thing. If someone does something via the Internet, MIS has the ability to find out.

I contract for the Federal Government. I usually open ES in the morning and then just have it minimized most of the day. I open it up during downtime and post something, then minimize. Technically, I have it open all day.

I've been doing that for over a year and haven't had a visit or a conversation about it yet. I think what others have said is true, as long as you get your work done, no one really cares. Plus which, there are thousands of workers here and not too many IT guys, I should know, I used to work with them.

If anyone remembers the big story from a year ago, where there were 12 or 13 federal employees fired for looking at something like 250,000 porn sites....well, I have to believe that a Redskins message board is pretty small potatos compared to that.

If they ever block this site, I'm screwed. It keeps me sane.
